Wide leg trousers will be the death of me

Really. Today I am wearing those balloon style trousers and three times so far ( twice on the stairs) the toe on one leg has caught in the trouser leg on my opposite leg.
I am home alone today and if it happens again it could be the end of me.
You don’t get this danger with leggings.

Sadly I have a mahoosive leg following operations so wide legs are my only option.

I haven’t had any incidents with my wide legged trousers yet but about 20 years ago I was walking to work on a hot summer day wearing flip flops when the heavens opened. All of a sudden the soaking wet pavement combined with smooth soled shoes was like an ice rink, I literally couldn’t walk and made the rest of the journey (across Tower Bridge) barefoot!

It’s almost as bad as when I hoovered the end of my scarf and nearly throttled
myself.

😄 This sounds like something from Miranda!

Just saw this and remembered this thread! Wide-leg trousers are a fashion hazard. I learnt the hard way

Yes I saw that too and meant to come back here and post it. We are in good company!

For weeks, TikTok has been absolutely full of posts about ‘Deadly Zara Pants’ as so many are tripping on them.

HoldMyWine · 14/07/2026 13:02

We got there first!

Haha I sent Fi and Jane a link to this thread as they were talking about the tik tok story and they gave it a mention on Times radio!

Woohoo, we're internet-famous!

I've been too busy/lazy to get my favourite palazzos hemmed higher yet, so will keep watching my step and keeping a hand free on the stairs.

DinoLil · 14/07/2026 14:49

Hahaha! Yep, me too! And if it's not your toe getting tangled up, it's your bloody dog boinging down the stairs behind you like they are attached by knicker elastic!!

Sandinyourshoes · 14/07/2026 15:12

After some close calls getting off buses or down escalators I’ve been chopping 2-3 inches off the hems of my denim wide leg jeans. I don’t know why they are always so long, its as if we should all be wearing platforms or sky high stilettos, another hazard. I look out for cropped legs when buying.

henlake7 · 14/07/2026 15:17

That's why I prefer barrel leg or harem pants....less deadly.
For wide legged I just use hemming tape, even if I cock up and make them too short. I'd rather have ankle swingers then neck breakers!😆

SagaNorenMalmo · 14/07/2026 16:34

I’ve swapped to culottes following an embarrassing (and painful) toe-in-trouser experience.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 14/07/2026 17:35

Thanks for this post. I am fed up of tripping up over them - mainly when at home and barefoot as they hang too low without shoes. I’m a clutz (currently icing a black lump on forehead the size of a golf ball because I clocked myself on the WC basin scooping up a discarded loo roll!) so thought it was just be being flipping useless.

HoldMyWine · 14/07/2026 17:42

I’m always covered in bruises from banging into things. I currently have a bruise on my forehead from walking into the sun parasol. My poor husband swear he will be up in a murder charge one day from one of my self inflicted injuries.

I almost killed myself when a student as back then the tight ankle/balloon/harem pants were all the rage. But the number of times I caught my toe in the billowy bit of fabric and almost fell down the stairs, the jolt as you find yourself hanging off the bannister. So as much as I love them I know I am not safe! My wide leg jeans are ok so far, but very floaty wide leg trousers and I have to remind myself to be careful….

I recently bought some wide-leg floor-length jeans, they have been no bother at all, maybe because they're stiff. I'm not risking floaty ones though.

Toober · 14/07/2026 18:18

I think maxis that swish just above the floor around you look lovely, but I have nearly died too many times. I now wear them higher so they sit around the ankles, which doesn't suit me at all, but I am still alive.

TheLightOfDay · 14/07/2026 18:19

I’m currently admiring a dark red bruise on my knee which I got from tripping on to a train recently. No wide legs involved, just me and my sandals.

I don’t even know what happened, took a step up and next thing I knew the floor of the train was coming up rapidly to meet me.

I could have done with the 20 concerned Chinese tourists actually. Everyone just turned and stared at me as I struggled gamely to my feet and pretended I was fine.
As the earth failed to swallow me up,
I swiftly walked to the other end of the train 😬
