Wide leg trousers will be the death of me

Really. Today I am wearing those balloon style trousers and three times so far ( twice on the stairs) the toe on one leg has caught in the trouser leg on my opposite leg.
I am home alone today and if it happens again it could be the end of me.
You don’t get this danger with leggings.

I recently converted some wide legs into harem style for exactly this reason. I’m clumsy enough as it is without my clothing trying to kill me too.

I walked in to my lounge after being out and announced grandly to DS that I was home. Before even getting the sentence out I got one foot stuck in the other wafting trouser leg and landed on all fours in front of him and his girlfriend. My bruised knees were not as hurt as my ego!

I was once late to pick up the DC from school. I was sprinting in the rain whilst wearing palazzo trousers. My left leg somehow got tangled in the flappy fabric of the right leg and I fell heavily. I took all the skin off my palms, grazed both knees and knocked my forehead on the ground. Still, I was late and embarrassed so I leapt up and trotted on. Around 5 minutes later, I was on the playground as the dc were let out and the world started to narrow and I passed out. I think it was shock. I still have scars.

Crikey. We need to start a petition to get them banned.

I never take wide legs or flares on hilly holidays. We have a steep staircase at home, so don't wear them there either

You say wide trousers I give you flip flops. I went to pull the bin back after the bin men had been wearing (luckily ) jeans, flip, flops and a t shirt. Managed to trip over said flip flops , landed on my elbows somehow. Scuttled in before said bin men clocked me. Had scraped all my elbows, was really really hurty and had a good blub.

Am very careful in said flip flops now. Bastards.

crochette · 31/05/2026 18:18

Same has happened to me, wide leg jeans. I nearly went through my first floor sash window. Absolutely shit myself.

I don’t remember this happening when wide legs were fashionable the first time around!!

Edited

Agree I still have scars on my knees from running downhill in flip flops and going arse over tit.

Can you imagine? Your other half could have been up on a murder charge.

I did genuinely have a sit down to calm down afterwards! Good old skinny jeans wouldn’t betray us like this

SwirlyGates · 31/05/2026 18:34

Right, that's it, I'm sticking with skinnies. Sod fashion, I want to escape with my life.

HoldMyWine · 31/05/2026 18:34

Exactly

Ah ha. Was at work rushing for the loo. Did a pirouette locking the cubicle door whilst trying to get my wide legged trousers down. Tripped over the wide leg, landed on the floor and wet myself.

i can laugh about it now. 😂😂

I ran up the stairs yesterday in a new pair of wide-leg trousers, caught my foot in them and fell up the stairs with a loud 'eeeep!' Face first right into the spot where I had just removed a massive spider literally 30s beforehand. So it was bad, but could have been a LOT worse!

ThatCyanCat · 31/05/2026 18:51

HoldMyWine · 31/05/2026 16:56

It’s almost as bad as when I hoovered the end of my scarf and nearly throttled
myself.

Isadora Duncan.

I love wide leg trousers, but yeah... there are potential hazards. Perhaps wear harem pants with elasticated ankle cuffs?

Highlighta · 31/05/2026 18:51

I am so glad it is not just me that had ridiculous wide leg trouser injuries. I fell over stepping into my garage as when I took the step down I didn't cater for the extra fabric also going down on one side first.

But I'm also very cautious if I ever wear a long maxi dress (way less now). As the back bottom hem got stuck in an escalator. I wasn't sure if the panic was more because I had visions of it grabbing my entire dress and I'd have to walk out the centre in my underwear.

WeAreNotOk · 31/05/2026 18:52

Brilliant post. I can't wear anything flappy. I'm a fast walker so I get more swing. I'd be wrapped up like a burrito!

Aaarghh another dangerous item to add to the list

I thought this just happened to me!!!! I am so scared to fall and have, in fact, fallen on my pyjama legs, on tiled floor!! So scared of the stairs!

WannabeMathematician · 31/05/2026 18:54

It’s awful at the moment. I’ve basically given up with trousers as biking with them is suicide.

TheLurpackYears · 31/05/2026 18:54

Yep, after what could have been a really nasty fall last summer when I tripped in my baggy trousers, I now only have tapered or cuffed trousers. I don’t think the suit me especially, and I can’t tolerate anything other than an elastic aged waste and now either. But getting old is a privilege isn’t it?

TheChosenTwo · 31/05/2026 18:58

I have some balloon leg trousers on today, they do have elasticated cuffs but still, the fabric is plentiful and flappy. Twice since I’ve had them I’ve almost gone arse over tit down the stairs. I’m now very careful and walk down the stairs sort of crab like, left foot on the extreme left of each step and right on the right. It’s not dignified but I do make it down alive.

crochette · 31/05/2026 19:03

I was carrying the washing upstairs while wearing wide legs, I was tripping over with every other step.

CPandme · 31/05/2026 19:04

Yep. Problem and there are so many around in wide. Just looking for straight linen and they are hardly any. I also have Cerebral Palsy and can’t do tie styles (and no sewing skills or people that can help alter) which reduces options.

I don’t need trousers to do me in - tripped over my own feet and broke a finger a few years ago.
