Wide leg trousers will be the death of me

Really. Today I am wearing those balloon style trousers and three times so far ( twice on the stairs) the toe on one leg has caught in the trouser leg on my opposite leg.
I am home alone today and if it happens again it could be the end of me.
You don’t get this danger with leggings.

I walked my palazzo trousers right off carrying washing up the stairs the other day. I left them on the stairs and carried on in my pants.

I also got my foot caught in a different pair of palazzos running for the last ride of the day at a theme park a few years ago. I went flying, grazed my palms and knees like a toddler and then had to go on a rollercoaster with excited DS. Embarrassing and painful.

Still love my palazzos though.

I caught the heel of my sandal in my long wide legged trousers at Orlando airport last year. In my defence the floor was like an ice rink. Did a sort of a graceful slide to the floor, one leg out in front, the other underneath me. As I landed I completely forgot myself and muttered ‘for fucks sake!’ under my breath and the nice American man who had begun to come to my aid turned swiftly about and just walked away. Mortified. 😂

Not such a nice man, then! Who wouldn't say the same in similar circumstances? Someone truly kind and empathetic would have said that they felt every word of that.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/05/2026 22:59

@HoldMyWine what do you mean by the toe?

Basically, you just mean that one leg got caught in the other right?

This is honestly why I wouldn't wear wide leg trousers. I'm naturally clumsy and it would be a disaster!

@NotDarkGothicMama "I walked my palazzo trousers right off carrying washing up the stairs the other day. I left them on the stairs and carried on in my pants"

sounds like something from an episode of Miranda 😂

I've been looking online at summer dresses. I'd like something below the knee as I have ugly knees and pasty legs, but so many almost skim the ground, and I just know I'd be tripping over right, left and centre, and maybe even down the hotel stairs...

boatyardblues · 31/05/2026 23:30

This thread has confirmed my suspicion that my new wide leg trousers are too dangerous. They’re so long I have almost tripped walking on the level in my house. As suggested by a pp, I will crop them.

I should know better. I had a death trap maxi dress which I foolishly wore to work with platform sandals (IKR?!). I fell down a flight of stone steps 36 hours before our flights to a special holiday I’d wanted to do since childhood. As I was mid fall my inner dialogue was “fuuuuuck I won’t make it to [dream destination], nooooooo” and somehow twisted cat-like so I Ianded without major injury. I was covered in bruises but the holiday was saved. 💪

I have to walk with a walker.

Bought a pair of very wide leg trousers as I dont like dresses and these look like a maxi skirt they were that wide.

Got out of the car and DH got my walker out if the car and we proceeded to walk across Tesco car park .

Having parked in the disabled bay it wasnt far to the front doors of the shop.

As I got to the doors I realised that my trousers had got caught in the back wheel if my walker and as they went around and around the wheel they then pulled said trousers down. I was trying to pull them free but couldnt let go of the handles if my walker.

Trousers were ubder my bum by this point. DH turned around and saw me.

Did he help? Did he fuck. He started to laugh then couldnt stop.

He finally did and unwound me as everybody going in and out if tesco could see my apple catcher knickers!

Trying to get back to the car was a picture, me standing as far back from my walker as humanly possible and still walk.

Bloody things went in the bin.

HoldMyWine · 01/06/2026 07:43

Oh @Megsdaughter that is conjuring up quite the image!

I have switched from maxi to midi dresses due to tripping over my own dress one too many times. I’m average height and they’re still comfortably below the knee on me.

I always drive with my wide leg trousers rolled up above my knee because once they got caught on something and I couldn't move my foot to the clutch!

This is hilarious, but not all the injuries of course. I've had the same problems over many years.

What I have always wondered is how, historically, women managed with all the long skirts and petticoats?

I know they had little hooks and other devices to hold the skirts up but it must still have been awkward.

HoldMyWine · 02/06/2026 07:28

I’m thinking of patenting retractable hooks to counter act the threat of injury

I fell up the stairs in a long skirt a few weeks ago. Covered in bruises!

It’s almost as bad as when I hoovered the end of my scarf and nearly throttled
myself.

😂yes that's why i wear leggings and not wide legged trousers. I am a nightmare in skirts. Thank you you did make me laugh. Im sure i would enjoy a glass of wine with you to put the world to rights 🍷

Oh no! Glad you managed to unravel in time to save yourself!

Google how Isadora Duncan died ...

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/06/2026 08:14

Add in platforms and they are death traps. I was hurrying to a party last time the fuckers were trendy and went flying in the middle of the road. Knee scraped to bone and both hands badly grazed. Worst bit? In front of a whole gaggle of kids from the school where I worked.

Coldwetlettuce · 02/06/2026 08:18

Lol why are you wearing balloon trousers when you’re home alone and hoovering while wearing a scarf?!

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2026 08:31

My sister lost her two front teeth to palazzo pants so please approach kerbs with caution.

Thebinisrightthere · 02/06/2026 08:34

I sympathise! I once got stuck in my dress trying to take it off. I couldn't ask any of my housemates to help me as I literally had my arms up, dress inside out, stuck around the breast area. If i didn't have the strength to finally force it off I might still be there, 25 years later...!

HHCrochetDiva · 02/06/2026 08:43

I almost killed myself when a student as back then the tight ankle/balloon/harem pants were all the rage. But the number of times I caught my toe in the billowy bit of fabric and almost fell down the stairs, the jolt as you find yourself hanging off the bannister. So as much as I love them I know I am not safe! My wide leg jeans are ok so far, but very floaty wide leg trousers and I have to remind myself to be careful….

cheezncrackers · 02/06/2026 09:01

I have found my people! I'm a short arse and a fast walker and any long, flowy garments are a fucking disaster for me. I trip over them, get all tangled up and step on the hems and because I'm short, a lot of stuff is too long on me anyway. This (hilarious) thread is a stark warning for me to stick with tailored styles!!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/06/2026 09:10

I’ve taken to lifting them up like some Victorian maiden when going up or down stairs 😂

Just how did they manage it and return alive?

Squeaktoyoulater · 02/06/2026 12:59

I have also done this going up a flight of stairs in a pub, I cut my hand on a sharp edge, there was blood everywhere and I felt utterly stupid explaining I had tripped over my trousers!!!

Allseeingallknowing · 02/06/2026 17:31

Lucy and Pauline should have worn trousers or culottes!
