The issue at the moment is not being able to cool the place even after the sun goes down. Very apt to describe it like inhaling the air from an oven. It’s vile.

I live in social housing and had my safety check a few weeks ago. I was anxiously checking the weather beforehand. Am so relieved to have got a grey day for it, so I feel for the woman linked to above.

My bedroom is like an oven even with the metallic thing on the back door because I couldn’t cool it enough overnight. Am utterly dreading every single one of the next few days.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 24/06/2026 17:31

Always gets a few degrees hotter this time of day too because the sun is hitting my west facing windows full on. The heat rises so without somewhere to vent it it’s boiling. Arghhhhh.

JenniferBooth · 24/06/2026 17:51

Going on about the pressure this is having on the NHS. Dont seem to care enough to stop the resistance to air con though.

No need to be a dick. I acknowledged that I was lucky. That is all.

You're on the wrong thread if you think 34 in the shade is "fine". But you thought you'd bring your glibness anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️

PinkHollyhocks · 24/06/2026 18:05

It's breathing in hot air that is so awful. I'm so grumpy even after spending all day in one room with ac. I'm bored. I'm dreaming of waking up to a crisp and bright frost😭

I totally feel your pain. I'm in a new-build HA house and it's exactly the same. No air. You can't breathe. 31 degrees upstairs. It's like hell has landed!!

Yes They have drip fed us before Im sure they do it to try and lessen the calls for air con

Gettingbysomehow · 24/06/2026 19:35

Ive slept on the sofa downstairs with the fan on all night. Upstairs is like a bread oven.
I keep waking up at 3am wondering where the hell I am 😂

My front door handle seems to melt in the summer, it sticks when the sun is directly on it, i have to go out through the back or I wouldn't be able to get in or out. And the sun is still beaming into my front room, and it's still 28°c in here. I'm absolutely sick of it.

MoonlightMemories · 24/06/2026 22:30

When I got home from work a couple of hours ago, my west-facing bedroom was reading at 28.3 C....and the was with the windows shut from very early morning, the curtains and blackout blinds drawn AND a reflective foil thing on the window. Desperately trying to get that temperature down a bit....I got less then 4 hours sleep last night and had an absolutely awful day at work today.....I don't know what I'll do if I don't get at least 5 hours tonight 😥.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 24/06/2026 22:36

I feel your pain @MoonlightMemories Think I got about two or three broken hours last night. It really really needs to cool down overnight. Closing all those windows and curtains so early in a still-hot-from-the-night-before flat/house is soul destroying. ☹️

Had my first headache in ages today and felt dizzy in spite of drinking loads of water.

This is why im so sick and fucking tired of the dont open the windows , keep the curtains closed and eat an ice lolly brigade It Does Not Work

What does work ...........AIR CON. But that brigade will desperately scrabble around with ridiculous suggestions to try and avoid the elephant in the room.

Whyohwhy321 · 24/06/2026 23:30

I've conceded defeat and am sleeping downstairs tonight. It's like an oven upstairs and deeply unpleasant, so I'm on a blow up bed with snoring dogs for company!

PeonyBulb · 25/06/2026 03:40

Oh and portable air coolers where you put water in do not work above 30 degrees. Under 30 you do get a nice cool breeze but if it’s over 30 then it’s just like normal pedestal fan.

I've got one of those. It's reasonably useless. It's cold if you sit 1 inch away from it but is pretty pointless beyond that in any temperature.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/06/2026 07:17

Bloody hell my bedroom was 33 when I went to bed. Im done with this.

KilkennyCats · 24/06/2026 17:02

So why did you walk for 2 hours in the hottest part of the day?

Because that was when the film I watched at the cinema was on! I dont do evening screenings coz my town is very dodgy to walk through after hours.
Walking was fine because I had my big UV parasol with me.

I would highly recommend a proper parasol in this extreme heat, it makes a big difference if you have to be out in the sun (plus it would be nice to see more people with one so Im not alone!!LOL).

I dont know how anybody is sleeping upstairs in this weather though. My bed is downstairs so not too bad, if it wasnt Id def be tempted to set up a camp bed arrangement for the duration!

BorgQueen · 25/06/2026 09:29

Drinking lots of plain water will not sufficiently rehydrate you in this weather. You need isotonic drinks or put a pinch of salt in a glass of full sugar squash or watered down juice.
Milk is also good. Salty snacks help too.
