Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

Butterme · 08/05/2026 20:09

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

OP posts:
Twinkletoesandspaghettios · 09/05/2026 01:04

I don’t get it. Something about him is intimidating for some reason.

I agree with someone upthread, I would be interested to hear from people who have worked closely with him

FiredFromACannon · 08/05/2026 20:26

I’ve no strong feeling either way, I don’t really like wildlife programmes so I haven’t really seen any of his programmes.

I was never into wildlife programmes until I started watch his. They are so interesting and informative. Love Sir David Attenborough.

Do you always go out of way to look for problems in people?

Ayarreet · 09/05/2026 01:18

Imbusytodaysorry · 09/05/2026 00:02

I feel the same.
I can’t believe he never got 100percent on the poll for his 100th Birthday.

What a man.

He didn't want to go to his celebration, apparently, but felt he must because people expected it.
I don't think he's ever cared about the accolades, he is simply a broadcaster.
A very good one, like David Dimbleby
I wish he'd acknowledged his privilege, perhaps he did and I missed it.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 09/05/2026 01:45

I can’t stand him! Very preachy, plus it’s a bit rich banging on about the environment considering the amount of air miles he’s racked up.

nevernotmaybe · 09/05/2026 02:02

SagathaChristie · 08/05/2026 23:13

Do you seriously think that he is so likeable that for someone not to like him that makes them a contrarian? I am absolutely baffled by this. I honestly had no idea that people liked him this much or that it was controversial to say that you don’t.

Maybe you could improve your reading comprehension. Because my comment doesn't say that.

It says asking is pointless, because it will bring out the crazies doing that every time and you will never know which is which.

Kokonimater · 08/05/2026 23:47

Anyone who doesn’t like him cannot know the amazing work he’s done and how he’s changed and influenced the world in protecting wildlife and their habitats. It’s priceless, he’s priceless.
I can’t help thinking anyone that doesn’t like him is a sociopath.
I’ll be devastated when he dies

Anyone who doesn’t like him is a sociopath? Are you serious? I assume you know him very well in real life to make such a comment.

People are saying why they don’t like him.

HoraceCope · 09/05/2026 05:46

his are the only wildlife programmes that i like to watch
anyone else just isnt the same

Butterme · 08/05/2026 21:22

Sorry my mistake!

The thread title was a rhetorical question.

I thought putting ‘Do you dislike him?’ sounded more confusing than ‘Do you like him?’

I’m going to ignore the poll results anyway ad you’re not the only one to make that mistake and some posters are putting no, even though they say they’re on the fence.

Ah okay - well be assured that some people don’t like him, regardless of any poll confusion. He and Prince William show their green credentials by jetting all over the world while lecturing people. It’s not a good look

LogicAboveAll · 08/05/2026 22:11

Yes, I dislike him, immensely. Am I going to get heckled, now.

I don't like Jane Goodall, either, but I don't think people are ready for that conversation based on some of the comments here 😆

I always preferred Johnny Morris' Animal Magic.

Oh I absolutely loved that take me right back to sitting on the floor Infront of the black and white TV .

It’s like he has cult- leader like status.

I don’t get why the OP assumed everyone was going to agree with her about how wonderful he is.

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a high-profile Darwinist’s comments about humans being “a plague” raises the specter of Social Darwinism, past and present.

Calling someone a sociopath for this ?
David Attenborough was friends with Prince Phillip and King Charles because of their work in animal conservation. Does that include all the shooting of animals and birds the pair of hunters have done over the decades of friendship.
I believe he could have spoken out from his privileged position. That doesn't make me a sociopath. I couldn't buddy up with people who enjoy shooting animals and birds for fun either but Saint David obviously can.

Absolutely. And, whilst I have no real issue with the royals as such, William gets on a plane and travels to the other side of the world to meet up for the Earthshock event - surely it’s not just me that sees the hypocrisy (especially in these days of video calling etc).

I would prefer not to be preached to about conservation and green issues by people who have travelled by air so many times

Rozendantz · 09/05/2026 06:47

I dislike him enough to immediately switch channels if I hear his voice.

I grew up in one of the African countries he seems to have spent some time in, and I find it enormously irritating that he seems to view himself as an expert on the animals in this country - that the majority of the population there know far more about than he does.

I think a lot of English people must like him and maybe assume everyone else does. I’m not English and I don’t know anyone who particularly likes him and a fair few who actively dislike him.

How bizarre

LotsAndLotsOfUnsernames · 09/05/2026 08:08

I find nature programmes make me sad (due to the human destruction of all this beauty and unknowable complexity) so have stopped watching them (including DAs) some time ago. I think DA could have done a LOT more for the environmental cause much sooner, which disappoints me. But he is a certainly talented broadcaster.

What I can't bear is uncritical emotional incontinence (cf Princess Di, Captain Tom) for someone that is not 'known' except to their nearest and dearest. Save the gush for people you know.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/05/2026 23:28

To quote Todd Rogers, an expert in this field, “everyone skims”.

I’m wiling to bet there are more no answers than there should be. Quick! Someone find a statistician.

He also advises to make responding easy and that the next steps should be clear… which in this case it was. Even if you skim the post most people will stop at the poll, read the question because it’s in bold and separate to the thread then answer.

I was asking if that was what you meant. Not stating that’s what you said.
Maybe you could improve your attitude. There’s no need to be so rude.

Tinselandtrainers · 09/05/2026 08:24

All those banging on about him being privileged, he was state educated. He isn't the silver spoon type that you imagine.

That isn't what is meant by privilege in this instance. It's the privilege that came with his top jobs at the BBC for decades that gave him this position where he could have spoken out thirty years to his audience. Nothing to do with where he went to school.

Luddite26 · 09/05/2026 08:46

Too late to edit I meant he could have spoken out thirty years ago. Not that he had an audience for 30 years. He joined the BBC in 1952 working his way up. His face fit.

Butterme · 08/05/2026 22:38

It’s a nice thread and the majority of responses are nice too.

There are a handful of posters who’ve said they don’t like him but most of those it’s through jealously and most of the others there’s no real reason why they dislike him.

I stand my ground that he is one of the most liked people in the country.

I don't think it's anything to do with jealousy that people don't like him, that's a ridiculous statement! I don't like my neighbour, but it's nothing to do with jealousy!
We can't all like everyone, but it seems that if anyone on here says they don't like him, they get bashed, hence the unpleasant thread.
I used to like him in the 70s, 80s, possibly into the 90s. But not any more. I can understand the national treasure feeling, as he's been around so long, but that's not how I feel about him.
He needs to step down and make room for the next generation now. Who won't command the salary he does!
