Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

OP posts:

It’s a nice thread and the majority of responses are nice too.

There are a handful of posters who’ve said they don’t like him but most of those it’s through jealously and most of the others there’s no real reason why they dislike him.

I stand my ground that he is one of the most liked people in the country.

I agree OP, he’s unique, an exceptional human being, and I don’t understand how any can be bored with his programmes. To most they’ve opened up a fascinating world, educative and informative. I wonder how many people chose their careers based on him and his enthusiasm for the natural world.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/05/2026 22:43

I think he’s on quite a lot. But no I don’t dislike him, I like him a lot.

I don’t dislike him as such but I roll my eyes at all this ‘I will spend 100 years travelling the globe and traipsing a film crew around and enjoying these experiences to tell everyone else not to take a 2 week holiday to Majorca because it’s bad for the environment

Christ! 😯

I have just googled this because something didn’t seem quite right. And it’s not quite so simple. He is paid an astonishing amount of money but I think the 7k a min is one of those things tabloid do as a clickbait headline in the hope readers won’t think too much about it.

He isn’t in the bbc list of salaries because his documentaries are made by his production company and the BBC don’t have to declare that. The total figure for his salary seems to have come from his own accounts and the papers divided this by the new series shown that year. I could be wrong but I guess it’s for more than just the 4 documentaries (2BBC, 1 Sky, 1prime). Quite a few of the more modern series are available to stream on various platforms. I assume he gets paid for that.

even if not he paid nearly 900k in taxes last year so he’s probably covered his own pension and quite a few other peoples.

My dad is a professor of biology (zoological sciences) and worked with him as an advisor on one of his Nature programmes (can't remember which one - i think it was about birds as my dad is an expert on birds and bird song, their communication, ways that they mate, bird brains etc).

I think he said that he thought David was a likeable person, but I don't remember what else specifically he said.

Ooh, I must ask him now lol 😆 😂

Edited

Yes please do and get back to us please

SpottyAlpaca · 08/05/2026 22:45

To work with, by all accounts, Sir David is definitely not the cuddly grandpa he is often portrayed as. He is a driven, demanding professional who absolutely does not suffer fools. He knows his stuff, he is the best at what he does and he expects others to match his standards.

It’s hardly surprising, really. The guy invented natural history television & wouldn’t have stayed at the top of his field for so long if he wasn’t.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 08/05/2026 22:46

That was it - The Life of Birds, in 1998. My dad was the programme advisor. 😆😎

I can’t believe e people are nit picking when you have so many airhead people recovering so much more and contributing nothing

like the poster said above - people want to talk about him across the world - we are so lucky to have him

can anyone think of anyone else who is working so hard from younger generation and giving us a legacy - I can’t

what they do to get noticed is go on I’m a celeb or other reality tv - instead of just grafting to build a reputation through their own work - begs belief

I heard from someone who works at the BBC that a lot of animals have been made to sign an NDA - when he dies it's all going to come out, apparently.

Especially those gorillas.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 08/05/2026 22:51

And, along with two of the guests at his birthday bash at the RAH tonight, Judy Dench and Michael Palin - surely the Holy Triumvirate of beloved British cultural icons.
(ducks….)

I am honoured to share a birthday today with a great man! Happy 100th sir!
Thought the OP was going to say they dislike him! I was ready for a fight! He’s the definition of a national treasure !

Well he’s more of a chequered past

bankruptcy - wife having to threaten to leave to get him to deal with his depression - seen him at shows being all about him

My mum doesn't like him. She thinks he talks down to us.

Patronising?
That means when you talk down to someone.

(sorry, couldn’t resist…)

2021x · 08/05/2026 22:58

He is a genuinely intellegent and a solid leader. He has set the standard for wildlife documentary that has endured.

If I was being critical I would say that he comes across a bit preachy when speaking about climate change when he flies all about the place. I would also be concerned about a successful BBC leader from the 1960s in their behaviour towards women and ethnic minorities - I am sure he got some stuff wrong and protected some awful behaviour.

Having said that I find him incredibly inspirational and Blue Planet changed my perspective on the world.

SqueakyFromme · 08/05/2026 20:47

i prefer Steve Blackshaw

Ugh no way. I find him incredibly irritating. I think he thinks of himself as some sort of modern day pioneer/adventurer and overdramatizes everything for effect. The alpha male effect is also very off putting. I can't watch him.
