Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

i'm watching the English gardens programmes on Iplayer, stunning photography and so interesting. I like him very much, he has always been there and when the day comes that he isn't it is going to be very sad. I find him life enhancing, educational and calming

I’ve just finished the Secret Gardens series with my wildlife-obsessed 9 year old. After we watched the first two episodes he built a hide out of a cardboard box and spent three hours sitting with his binoculars watching foxes and birds and making ‘field notes’. Anything that gets a child doing that is good in my book!

He is a genuinely intellegent and a solid leader. He has set the standard for wildlife documentary that has endured.

If I was being critical I would say that he comes across a bit preachy when speaking about climate change when he flies all about the place. I would also be concerned about a successful BBC leader from the 1960s in their behaviour towards women and ethnic minorities - I am sure he got some stuff wrong and protected some awful behaviour.

Having said that I find him incredibly inspirational and Blue Planet changed my perspective on the world.

But it’s one plane journey to stop many more - you have to start somewhere - it is necessary cost to create benefit further down the line

I never get it when people say that

ListenToAlfDubs · 08/05/2026 23:01

I think he's amazing but if you look at the vitriol the Green Party get for saying the same things as him, the national treasure status is a little inconsistent

Allseeingallknowing · 08/05/2026 22:23

He’s been part of our lives for many, many years, you must know if you like him. You don’t have to know him personally to have an opinion!

I don't connect with celebrities - they're either good at their job or not. What they are like off camera is of zero interest

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 21:36

Absolutely - to me that’s the privileged bit - I think like John Simpson he admits he was far from a good father - and for DA it’s a regret and John Simpson I believe

yea his wife totally picked up the slack - he must have always been away or be thinking about work when at home - it’s interesting we never see his kids - they don’t seem to be featuring In Thai programme either - I think his son is in similar profession but in Australia - wonder if he went to get away or establish his own reputation

yes he got to sink himself into his love while a women did the remaining mundane practical holding the family bit - sad

his daughter was sitting next to him all evening! 😁

I think a lot of that vitriol is whipped up by the media and social media algorithms. The amount of coverage it gets doesn’t necessarily fit with the general feeling of the population. I’d imagine the people that do agree either way it make up a significant proportion of the people who don’t like Attenborough.

Ireland

Well, that was absolutely not my experience living there when I lived in Wexford. In fact I remember he won some poll of one of the most publicly liked figures in Ireland ( which as an English man caused a bit of media attention!)

You're full of the milk of human kindness, aren't you.

I am an amazing human being. Just as you are.

We don't have to agree with each other on everything. It would make life very boring otherwise.

And I find it interesting that I can comment on my dislike without making a direct insult towards someone and you feel the need to make a personal attack.

Good to know ❤️

Augarden · 08/05/2026 23:12

Irish people love him as well, if you hate all English people that's just you.

Contrarians are everywhere, that''s the problem with your question. There are people who gleefully say any old nonsense about it for the attention of being different so there will always be a "yes" guaranteed, and it will be impossible to know if it is real or them.

Do you seriously think that he is so likeable that for someone not to like him that makes them a contrarian? I am absolutely baffled by this. I honestly had no idea that people liked him this much or that it was controversial to say that you don’t.

Some Irish people like him, some don’t. He’s certainly not held in the same regard I’m seeing on here. I don’t where the fuck you got “hate all English people” from. Is there something wrong with you?

I never said all Irish people dislike him. My point was he is not held in the same regard here. This thread is fucking weird.

EarthSight · 08/05/2026 23:17

Yes. He came across like a perv when he was interviewing with Cameron Diaz on the Graham Norton show. She seemed to be a genuine fan and was just naturally enthusing about his work, and he turned it into something sexual. She seemed a bit embarrassed about it but soothed it over.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I don't like David Attenborough. I don't understand why he's so beloved but it's obvious I'm in a minority.

As for being an ignorant, narrow-minded person I suspect you are projecting your own insecurity.

My comment wasn't even directed at you, so I want to ask, are you OK, hun?

BlackRowan · 08/05/2026 23:25

I like him but he does get a bit sanctimonious sometimes

HayfeverComethAndThatRightSoon · 08/05/2026 23:26

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 22:31

There would be journalists covering the other stuff - he was covering the natural world

ffs poor blokeyou can’t do it all

He SAW the damage, year on year. With his own eyes.
The man is intelligent. He saw it but didn't share the information.

Coconutter24 · 08/05/2026 20:31

Does it matter what the thread is called? You read the thread and then get to the poll where it asks a very clear question. You then answer the question you just read. It’s not that difficult really

To quote Todd Rogers, an expert in this field, “everyone skims”.

I’m wiling to bet there are more no answers than there should be. Quick! Someone find a statistician.

It wasn’t in his role or remit

Jeeze - he was doing a wildlife documentary - climate change is complicated and not something on the side - as said plenty of journalists of less busy people to champion that

I think he’s got it jus right - in for one would have switched off if he did it any sooner

he did incude when it affected animals habitat . I don’t know why people think he should have been the leader of it coming out

we are still in an ice age anyway aren’t we? Or interglacial period? It’s not straight forward

To work with, by all accounts, Sir David is definitely not the cuddly grandpa he is often portrayed as. He is a driven, demanding professional who absolutely does not suffer fools. He knows his stuff, he is the best at what he does and he expects others to match his standards.

It’s hardly surprising, really. The guy invented natural history television & wouldn’t have stayed at the top of his field for so long if he wasn’t.

Come on. He didn’t INVENT it

there were several other incredibly influential film and program makers who pioneered the format of televised nature exploration, way before Attenborough

Jacques Yves Cousteau for example

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 08/05/2026 23:39

I get crucified when I say this irl but I have always found him creepy. I don’t really like him.

viques · 08/05/2026 23:42

I am so pleased he made it to 100, he looks well. He was very good looking as a young man and is still striking.

Happy Birthday 🍾🐸(he likes frogs)
