Does anyone dislike David Attenborough

I’m just wondering if there is anyone who dislikes David Attenborough.

I genuinely think he’s one of the very few people that everyone likes.
No matter how old, what class, what culture etc all I’ve ever heard is how much they love him.

It’s his 100th birthday today and if you google his name you’ll see.

I thought I’d do a poll incase anyone was too afraid of admitting they don’t like him 🤣

But it’s one plane journey to stop many more - you have to start somewhere - it is necessary cost to create benefit further down the line

I never get it when people say that

Does it actually stop anyone?

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/05/2026 23:45

It’s fairly straightforward in that it’s settled science. It’s probably a fair point to say he should have done it earlier.

But the BBC were both sidesing climate change until relatively recently. I don’t know how much editorial choice he gets if the BBC decide if you put climate change in you need to balance it with a counterview. Maybe it absolutely was his choice. Maybe there was a choice between not mentioning it at all or mentioning it but having to point out the arguments that man made climate change is not a thing.

Your poll is stupid. The thread is called, does anyone dislike… and the poll is do you like…

So loads of people will press the wrong button!

Only if they can’t read! 🙄🙄🙄

Kokonimater · 08/05/2026 23:47

Anyone who doesn’t like him cannot know the amazing work he’s done and how he’s changed and influenced the world in protecting wildlife and their habitats. It’s priceless, he’s priceless.
I can’t help thinking anyone that doesn’t like him is a sociopath.
I’ll be devastated when he dies

OonaStubbs · 08/05/2026 23:49

I always preferred Johnny Morris' Animal Magic.

Wishingplenty · 08/05/2026 23:52

I met one of his cameramen once, he had only absolutely lovely things to say about him. I am kind of neutral personaly.

snackatack · 08/05/2026 23:53

do people realise they can change their votes? You can just go back and click the opposite one!

I wouldn't go that far :-), am not so involved with him as to be devastated when he dies. However he is brilliant and has brought so much into people's lives, his 'firm' have made marvellous films and they are so entertaining, quite spellbinding at times.

He also seems like a jolly nice chap, friendly, pleasant and down to earth despite his intelligence and success (I hope we don't find out the opposite when he pops his clogs, I want no Lownie-like revelations).

I always preferred Johnny Morris' Animal Magic.

I loved that when I was a kid. He did a great job of anthropomorphising. I particularly remember his camel voice.

Looseweightlooseinterest · 08/05/2026 23:55

My son is in Australia working as an ecologist. He even messaged me today to say that all his colleagues raised a glass to Sir David in their local after work.

He's a talented man. His public persona seems very positive.

But I've never met him ... so can't really say yay or nay.

He is the literal embodiment of national treasure. He is the closest thing to a non religious saint there could be. Who could possibly not like him!

I feel the same.
I can’t believe he never got 100percent on the poll for his 100th Birthday.

What a man.

the80sweregreat · 08/05/2026 20:31

I didn’t mind him, but I don’t like wildlife programmes so I’ve never watched any of them.
He seems decent and has enormous knowledge and personality.

I'm intrigued as to how anyone doesn't like to watch wildlife/nature programs, a few posters have mentioned this, I find astonishing! 🤣

SkyBlueCloudyLakes · 09/05/2026 00:09

I find his voice irritating so I do avoid his programs. He is extremely good at what he does tho. So no I don't specifically dislike him, just his voice!!

You find it astonishing that different people like different things?

MummyMaryUK · 09/05/2026 00:10

Anyone who dislikes Sir David is definitely for the watching.
A love affable, calm and knowledgeable person you are unlikely to find.
The longevity of his career only serves to emphasise the importance in his contributions to broadcasting, the environment and the preservation of the worlds endangered species.

Happy Birthday Sir David, you are a true national treasure, may you have many more birthdays to celebrate.

Each to their own. I love them but my son isn't interested in programmes about animals though he likes animals. We can't all like the same things.

I’ve imagine quite a lot of things were still quite gendered in the 1970s.

If the stuff that’s getting made now is still so gendered I’ll start disliking him.

At the same time Life on Earth was being filmed, I was a small child who had just learned to read. In amongst the fog of the smokers on the top deck of the buses and the 10p bus fare for my mother to get into the town centre to do some shopping on Wednesday morning (because most of the shops with the exception of Sainsbury's - and maybe Boots - would close at lunchtime for the rest of the day), my first exposure to sexism was seeing an advert on the bus for jobs with them. Underneath the advertised salary for a bus driver and conductor, it gave a separate (2/3 less) salary for women in those roles.

The fact that they were present at all was significant.

And he was controller of BBC2 at the time that they bought rights to show the first documentary about Jane Goodall's work, which would have shown women actually involved in science and conservation far earlier than that.

John finnemore has a good sketch of two people having to spend months trying to spot a snow leopard and the only thing they bond over is their mutual dislike for Attenborough because he just turns up and does the voiceover.

I do base most of my opinions on bbc radio 4 sketches so thanks for that

Waitingfordoggo · 09/05/2026 00:29

Sir D was far more interested in the 'back room boys' than many current wildlife presenters.

This alarmed me for a moment @Crunched, I thought you were implying an Operation Yew Tree situation.

You are not the only one!

Like him or not, I think he’s one of the few men in the public eye that seems impossible to imagine being involved with that.

reallyalurker · 09/05/2026 00:42

I don't like the programmes he makes at all, and know two other people who don't either (none of us are climate change deniers, or as far as I know sociopaths, as previous posters have suggested). I don't know anything about the rest of his work or life, so can't comment on that.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 09/05/2026 00:45

I'm in my sixties. Born and reared in the British Isles. I've seen clips of his shows on reviews and compilation shows but have never actually watched any of his programmes.

I love nature and wildlife but watching it on tv is like looking at pictures in a book. I want to see it for real. One of my happiest memories is the bat that that used to flutter round my grandparents house in SE Ireland - that was like a miracle to me as a South London kid.

In the last few years I have been busy spending the kids inheritance travelling to see nature. I've had the absolute privilege of watching a family of wild gibbons swing past me in Borneo. I've seen whales and hand holding sea otters in Alaska. I've watched hares fight in NW Ireland. I've seen sea eagles in Goa. Closer to home I watch a robin's nest in a house across the street. §

Ninjachicken · 09/05/2026 00:54

Everyone loves him 😁

BarbieKew · 08/05/2026 20:47

My cat loves him. We often sit in bed watching nature documentaries with a packet of bourbons/Dreamies. My cat particularly seems to like the Antarctic penguin ones, and any with lions or tigers, obvs.

Edited

I met David Attenborough many years ago (probably about 40 years ago thinking about it!) after he gave a talk locally. I was so starstruck all I could think to say was "My cat loves your programmes" 🙈. He left the building at the same time as we did and he opened the door for me. I had a massive crush on him as a teenager - he was very good looking IMO, as well as brilliant.
