Imagine if you posted a pic of your baby on social media and the first reply was "Lovely. You're booked in for a hysterectomy, yes?"

Catwalking · Today 11:39

😍 I'll show my daughter when she gets back from school, they're her favourite breed. Not that we'll be adding one to our family as our cat would be horrified!

At over £1000 per kitten I hope you buy her some lovely treats with your 5k.

I’m part of the ‘get-her-spayed brigade’, as a PP called it, because I do comms for my local rescue, which includes hearing all too many stories about irresponsible idiots who let their cats (or kittens) get pregnant & then either dump the resulting kittens or just don’t bother to spay them.
We have a litter of four week old kittens at the moment who are being hand-fed & are in & out of the vets.
They were riddled with worms & fleas when they came to us & the woman they came from never spays her cats because she thinks it’s ’against nature’. We’ve reported her.

I hope the OP isn’t an irresponsible idiot. I’m absolutely not saying she is. But we say this for a reason.

Can say the same about children. How many have you adopted?

catipuss · Today 11:49

AllPlayedOut · Today 11:21

There is absolutely no need to breed them, “pedigree” or not. It doesn’t benefit your cat. It only endangers her and there are more than enough unwanted cats out there without people like you deliberately adding to their numbers. And yes plenty of expensive cats end up abandoned or in bad homes. I had an abandoned ragdoll who had been dumped on the streets and was in terrible shape. You are staggeringly naive if you believe that is so unlikely to happen. People like you are not cat lovers. You wouldn’t deliberately continue to breed your cat and contribute to the already massive population of unwanted cats if you were.

Edited

That was suitably nasty, what makes you an expert on who is or isn't a cat lover? Funny how with all these unwanted cats it's almost impossible to adopt one these days. There are certainly people out there who shouldn't be allowed any pets, but that isn't the op's fault.

Growlybear83 · Today 11:49

Theyre so beautiful! When our cat had kittens, I don’t remember their eyes opening quite so early. It was such a magical time and we missed them so much when they moved to their new homes. Will you be keeping any of them?

Most animals in rescue are bred by irresponsible backyard breeders trying to make money.

If responsible breeders stop breeding, people won't suddenly stop wanting pets, they will have no choice but to go to the irresponsible breeders.

Educate people about where to go for their pets, discourage poor breeding practices, encourage and support the good breeders rather than targeting them.

I hope you aren’t planning on selling your baby. Weird equivalence.

My family and I have been picking up the pieces left by people like OP since before I was born. We rescued, bottle fed and spayed/castrated too many cats and kittens to count and still they kept coming because of people like OP who care more about money and what they want than about the welfare of cats.

And no it is not nearly impossible to adopt cats. It happens every day, multiple times a day. There are hundreds of cat rescues out there. If you can’t get a cat from any of them then perhaps you should question if you are the right person in the right circumstances to own one.

Pricelessadvice · Today 11:55

Beautiful kittens!
I love Maine Coons. Do you have a favourite yet OP?

I don’t buy that there are good breeders. I might buy that there are some selective breeders in that they don’t breed more than a few litters but I’ll never call them good or ethical because there’s nothing good or ethical about continuing to add to pile of cats out there when there are far too many around as it is and exploit the animals that they own. They’re all contributing to the misery even if it’s marginally better to buy from a selective breeder than a backyard breeder but plenty of breeders whom people would class as “ethical” have proved to have terrible practices too, which go beyond the issues that I mentioned above.

FFS it's totally different as you well know, anyway, someone has already trotted that one out.🙄

Citcatt · Today 11:12

I know. They are pedigree . She's not just got out and had wham bam thankyou mam. It also doesn't mean I will constantly breed her. They are expensive so they are very unlikely to go to bad owners. Anyway I shall ignore them replys it will just go on and on otherwise.

Thank you. Can't wait till they change in looks and their personalities

I foster cats through various rescues. Unfortunately, even pedigree cats get treated badly and dumped, often when they can no longer make money for their owners. I have fostered quite a few pedigree cats and they’re often in a terrible state after having many litters. Being pedigree doesn’t protect cats from abuse I’m afraid.
