What's to stop a buyer getting one and breeding from it?

FavouriteSunset · Today 12:10

That was suitably nasty, what makes you an expert on who is or isn't a cat lover? Funny how with all these unwanted cats it's almost impossible to adopt one these days. There are certainly people out there who shouldn't be allowed any pets, but that isn't the op's fault.

It’s not almost impossible to adopt one, it’s just that good rescues have high standards about who these cats, who have often already been badly treated, are given to, to maximise the chance of them having a good, safe, life and not needing to be rehomed again. Any cat lovers should be in favour of that.

Has OP answered anyone on whether mum (and dad?) will get spayed after this? Or are they just money makers 😓 all for admiring a litter of kittens but the silence on whether precautions will be taken to avoid another (since there’s a huge epidemic of abandoned kittens and kittens/cats in rescues), or whether OP is just one of those people who see easy money and actually couldn’t give a hoot about animal welfare..😅

I think this is an advert.

You really think I would want people from mumsnet knowing where I live.

Most backstreet breeders will be happy to meet in a car park as I'm sure you're aware.

They'd meet on top of a mountain if they thought they were getting £1000 out of it.

@Citcatt thank you for sharing

I love seeing pictures of kittens.

how do you get anything done? I'd just be looking at them all day 😂

Imagine if you posted a pic of your baby on social media and the first reply was "Lovely. You're booked in for a hysterectomy, yes?"

Except in your example, I would hope nobody was about to take your baby off of you and sell it for profit. Can you not see the difference?

SoScarletItWas · Today 12:17

I know. They are pedigree . She's not just got out and had wham bam thankyou mam. It also doesn't mean I will constantly breed her. They are expensive so they are very unlikely to go to bad owners. Anyway I shall ignore them replys it will just go on and on otherwise.

Thank you. Can't wait till they change in looks and their personalities

Whee I got my MCs my contract said I would get them spayed and couldn’t breed from them.

You pay loads to get a full MC and have them on the active register. Breeders are very protective of their cats and lines. I’m surprised you found a reputable breeder willing to to put your girl to her stud.

(My point isn’t ’how would they enforce that contract’ - I’ve often felt that even though I had no intention to breed kittens.)

I foster cats through various rescues. Unfortunately, even pedigree cats get treated badly and dumped, often when they can no longer make money for their owners. I have fostered quite a few pedigree cats and they’re often in a terrible state after having many litters. Being pedigree doesn’t protect cats from abuse I’m afraid.

Absolutely agree this this. Being "expensive" meaning the owner can afford to buy initially doesn't mean they are good owner, it just means they have money.

Our family pet was a rescue expensive pedigree, the novelty had quickly worn off his original owner when the life long commitment of any pet, regardless of whether it is a pedigree or a mutt, became a reality.

Thinking their cost will protect these kittens is naive. Hope the OP has breeding/neutering, return clauses contracted in the sales.

@Citcatt if you want to keep us updated with your kittens it's better to post in the dedicated section

Otherwise, your thread gets hijacked by people who want to talk about something completely different.

My understanding is that people who breed responsibly don’t make a profit from it because doing things correctly adds up to the cost of what the buyer pays.

I already have homes for them.
But no people need to see the home. Theres no way I would meet in some car park. And if people are happy to part with £1000 + in a carpark I would be concerned.

There is absolutely no need to breed them, “pedigree” or not. It doesn’t benefit your cat. It only endangers her and there are more than enough unwanted cats out there without people like you deliberately adding to their numbers. And yes plenty of expensive cats end up abandoned or in bad homes. I had an abandoned ragdoll who had been dumped on the streets and was in terrible shape. You are staggeringly naive if you believe that is so unlikely to happen. People like you are not cat lovers. You wouldn’t deliberately continue to breed your cat and contribute to the already massive population of unwanted cats if you were.

Edited

Absolutely agree. We don’t need any more cats, pedigree or not, not when there are so many desperately needing homes waiting in rescues (like my own was before I adopted him).

Well the OP’s queen is on the active register, I assume?

I was going to send a few pictures here and there as they grow. But probably won't. Does where you post actually make a difference though?

It’s not completely different. It’s about as relevant as it gets.

She’d probably spell Maine Coon properly if she was a registered breeder.
