Finding horrible things when elderly people die. ***Edited by MNHQ to add: TW: contains details some may find upsetting including details of CSA***

Has anyone else cleaned out a loved one’s home and found horrible stuff?

Last year my father in law died. He was 78, had lived alone for several years and died suddenly. After his death, we went through the house and found a hidden stash of pornography. It wasn’t illegal, but the magazines were called things like ‘Babyface’ and ‘Just 18’. In other words, the models were as childlike as it was legally possible to photo. We also found several pornographic books and stuff he’d printed off the Internet. Again, it was all young and underage girls. My partner was very upset. His dad had an old laptop but my partner smashed and burned it (he was venting his anger). He said he didn’t want to know what was on there and that it was best if his father took any secrets to the grave.

Anyway, a neighbour recently told me a similar story, only in her case it was even darker. After her partner’s dad died, they found photos he had taken of young girls playing in a nearby park. She said it looked as if he’d taken them from his car. There were a lot, apparently, and she and her partner burnt everything.

I wonder how common this is? When my own father died, I found a bit of pornography, but it was all pretty tame and adult. Even that upset me though. In all three cases the men died suddenly. I suppose people with a terminal diagnosis have time to destroy such things.

No they are not. Maybe you need to mix with different people.

Ugh… I just shudder at the thought of those men who follow hundreds of Onlyfans or apt porn type accounts. Gross. Makes me glad to be single.

I read recently about an Indian man who set up an only fans using AI to put himself through university. It makes me smile to think of the men who pay to watch young women when it’s really another man.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 27/04/2026 03:30

Clearing my uncle’s house. He was a bachelor. So my brother and I cleared his house. Apart from finding money stashed away, we found a medicinal pot with cannabis in it. It was quite a lot. He may well have been a dealer, hence the stash of cash and that no one would suspect a 70 yo disabled man of dealing.

@Pallisers "Oh I'd take a punt that you know some very sick men too. They don't wear it like a badge on their lapels. Hence this post about people finding out stuff when clearing out after death. It's not all men but don't for a minute think you have wafted through the world never encountering a bad one."

I know. The naivity and self righteousness on Mumsnet is off the scale. The usual retort is to blame the woman for only mixing with bad men.

@Hardgarden "Same with women too then"

As for this. I hate to disillusion you but have you never read the statistics on rape, sexual assault, voyeurism, indecent exposure, murder, child and animal abuse/torture etc etc etc ad nauseam (which is Latin for "to a sickening degree")? If not, I really think it's time you did for your own and the common good.

You're judging all men by your own family. Most men are decent, sorry to hear your attract the wrong ones.

Patriarchal society. I remember watching Rod Stewart at Glastonbury on TV around 2010 and he had a string section of women dressed in what appeared to be school girl attire. He'd be 60+ then and I thought you need to be told NO! 1972 was 35+ years ago

Lovehoney dot com sells a range of sexy-schoolgirl wear today.

SouthernNights59 · 27/04/2026 01:10

They really, really, aren't. Maybe you need a better social circle.

They are. It all comes to light at times like this, when men you THOUGHT were decent, turned not to be, so much.

T3hSheikan · 27/04/2026 04:13

Kinda disturbing how many people here have destroyed or hidden stuff that might help other victims instead 😔

ForCosyLion · 27/04/2026 04:29

Oh God, the NAMALT crowd on here. 🙈 The overwhelming majority of men are either pervs or "just" sex-obsessed. Ask any wife how important sex is to their husband. Even if a "decent" man, he'll still be all sex, sex, sex, sex, sex. His wife will be in no doubt of the HUGE importance of sex to him.

They are all the same. Whether their sex obsession comes out in being a perv or whether it's just channeled into a laser-focus on sex with their poor fed-up wives, all of them are, in some way, bloody sex maniacs.

My partner found out his mum had a secret child at the age of 13 when clearing out her house. Sadly the child died young in childhood but she never mentioned it to anyone.

How sickening that some man, possibly a relative, did this to a child of 13. I hope the rest of her life was happier. 💐

pampus grass, and the other symbol is a pineapple

There was a pineapple plant growing outside the back door when we moved into the house my family lived in in 1970's Singapore. It bore 1 fruit about a year later & I was told it tasted very nice.

Oh it does - Ram Books on Holloway Road, I go past it on the bus. Two doors from the library and opposite a church.

Absolutely hysterical the other day on Holloway Road

I met my two eldest children (20s) for a nice lunch and afterwards my daughter said, lets go for a sweet treat and a coffee over to this place...and she pointed over the other side of the road.

I said "oooh, that shop looks interesting just before the cafe" (kind of like a Bagpuss shop) - they were both instantly like "oh, no...don.t look in there!"

It's Ram Books

We're walking up past it , me joking "ohhh, kids, look away!" (like I do if we're going past a council estate, yer know?!) - jokes - anyway, it's obviously a sex shop of the old style - I thought they'd all shut!?

However, it's an absolute disgrace!

Behind the Bagpuss exterior, there's an actual CAT sitting in the window...like they're trying to lure us in to their world of depravity. We had a little chuckle.

We're not really a family who's very good when it comes to sex things usually...when we were watching a film when the kids were teens, they'd disappear off to the kitchen for a biscuit if there was any sign of any sauciness just about to happen; we still call that kind of thing "a Rich Tea Moment" if the subject arises...ha!

Anyway, after cake and coffee we wandered round the corner to Highbury Fields where I'd never been before.

As soon as we got there, I started with this Andie McDowell impression about "oooh, I hadn't noticed it was raining"

I kept on doing it as an (annoying) running joke.

But blimey cockspittle if it wasn't actually the place; when I got home, that's where Hugh Grant had lived in 4 Weds n an F...his aura must have invaded me as soon as I stepped into it.

Amazing coincidence, Jack Antonoff was on the radio that night with whatshername with blonde hair; he only produced HAim/Taylor Swift/Kendrick LAmarr (some of my kids' fave artists) ...and is also married to Andie McDowell's daughter.

Super nepo, ofc, but a very strange coincidence (if anyone's still reading!) - and all related to that Sex Shop on Holloway Road.

Aaaah, well, I enjoyed it...

But if they weren’t wrong ones in the first place, they’d be nothing for her to attract.
Could you explain how that’s her fault?
We could all - the 98% of women that have been sexually harassed- do with your wisdom to help us avoid.

Newmumatlast · 27/04/2026 00:14

That's a half brother not a step. A step would be if it was your mum's new husband's son so not at all biologically related to you

Yes, you're quite right.
I always just call him my brother, never thought of him any other way, and got this wrong.
Apologies.

They really are. And my social circle is good now as it excludes men. They are not missed.

Bit baffled at the shock that people might have a g string, Viagra or condoms. I have vibrators in my bedside table, if I die tomorrow will the person clearing my things be absolutely horrified at the depravity?

YES! YOU HUSSY!

🤣

My mother is 83 and we have been estranged for over ten years cos she's a thoroughly awful person. I am fully expecting there to be a letter for me among her things, which will be designed to make me feel as crap as possible. She's already cut me out of the will in favour of my brother but made me one of the executors 🤣.

You can stand down as executor when the time comes!'

Boomer50 · 27/04/2026 06:07

I'm 75 and have a "toy box in my wardrobe" and lube in the drawer . My sister will find it after I'm gone but rather than being shocked or angry she would be happy that I still was getting pleasure from life.

Ellie56 · 27/04/2026 06:24

Hardgarden · 26/04/2026 15:36

You don’t have to clear it. So don’t.

I agree. As PP said you can stand down as executor when the time comes. Let your brother sort it all out.

unsync · 27/04/2026 06:31

My ex FIL had a secret darkroom. We found lots of film negatives and photos of a woman and child after he died. We also found his accounts with records of large cash withdrawals. The conclusion was that he had another family somewhere. He had told my now ex-H to go to his business premises alone, remove everything without looking at it and then burn it all. Hardly surprising really given what was discovered.

Boomer50 · 27/04/2026 06:36

In the 60's if you were pregnant and unmarried you were sent to the unmarried mothers homes . It was dreadful . These girls were treated like dirt by the people that ran them .... more like criminals . I remember it well as my father drove the Sunday School Bus and we picked them up .
They were disowned by their families and instructed by the homes not to talk to anybody like people may catch something from them . I will never forget it .

What proportion is that of the World's population? How accurate are the statistics that the visitors were men? A visitor using a VPN would leave no reliable trace as to their location nor gender. How many of those "visitors" were actually robots searching the web for web directories?

Magical thinking going on there.

The actual criminal convictions show there are plenty of men for whom this is sexually arousing

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 27/04/2026 07:04

@mathanxiety62 mil is total visits to the website. (Showing 200 cats of porn not just sleep)

What the heck about Emily Bishop and Deirdre

Omg 😂

Imagine what Ken Barlow was up to. Is that character dead yet?

Magicschoolbusdropout · 26/04/2026 20:57

Nope

A fleshlight-its a plastic/rubber vagina that men wank into

A flashlight wouldn't have made the poor woman want to buy eye bleach-the photos where bad enough

Apparently it had been well used
