How a country in the exact opposite state that Weimar Germany was in managed to fall for the exact same playbook is a fascinating narrative.

It also underlines that rather than being some amazing "it just happened" drive for totalitarianism, the whole Nazi thing was just a refinement of earlier instances.

In hindsight, I think the teaching history has badly let us down. The Nazis were not a one-off terrible sort of unnatural aberration which let's the rest of the world (and history) off the hook.

I read a couple of Ian Rankin crime books last week, and for me it's the comparison of the traditional detective idea against what we see in the press when stuff like this happens. I know, one is fiction and there is health and safety at play etc in the latter, but it still unsettles me.

Has the concept of policing by consent gone ?

Katy Balls on R4 this morning - she was at the event as a foreign correspondent and apparently security at the hotel was woeful. The event itself was tightly controlled but otherwise pretty much anyone could wander about at will. Drinks parties happening before/around the event and no checking of ID etc. Guests were even remarking on how lax security was. I've heard it reported that the alleged shooter was a hotel guest.

That said…..could someone explain to me how a man armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, making for an event at which the 🍊 💩 and multiple of his minions are present isn’t (ahem) 'terminated with extreme prejudice' by what I assume must have been the enormous number of armed agents present?

Call me a sceptic but it makes no sense to me.
