She's full of energy, enthusiasm, so happy and positive

Im a right misery in comparison and decades younger.

Lovely thread 😊

wishingonastar101 · 16/04/2026 09:04

Saw her in Sainsbury's buying chickpeas 20 years ago - maybe that's the secret. Legumes.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 16/04/2026 09:15

I thought you were going to tell us she's dead! Thank heavens.
I love her, You Rang Milord? is still one of my favourite programmes.

PatriciaRocks · 16/04/2026 09:20

@NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen - that is such a lovely and heartwarming story!
How nice to hear that there are celebrities like this.
I think she's a very happy, positive person, who loves other people. She doesn't worry too much about conventional clothing and appearance, so won't go down the awful Botox/pulled face look.
Refreshing!

LeopardsRockingham · 16/04/2026 09:21

I LOVE Su
When I was little she was who I wanted to be when I grew up. And I've only realised with this thread that actually she is my style icon.

Does anyone know if You Rang M'Lord or Hi De Hi are on any of the channels? I would love to watch them again.

Thanks to the PP for the podcast info.

I also can't believe Timmy is 70. He's been in NI recently on his bike and the amount of fun facts he's given about my local area that I had no idea about has been "utterly brilliant"
DS is now obsessed with him and watching the old clips of Malllets Mallet....say blah!

PatriciaRocks · 16/04/2026 09:21

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/04/2026 07:51

She’s one of those people that would be so annoyingly exhausting to be friends with. Very in your face and loud

I don't think so. She's bubbly rather than loud. I doubt she'd be "in your face", that's a very negative supposition.

PatriciaRocks · 16/04/2026 09:22

I saw her on Richard Osman's House of Games and she was hilarious! Totally unpretentious and very entertaining.

"That's TV" channel has You Rang Milord? on some evenings! And Oh Doctor Beeching.

ForPinkDuck · 16/04/2026 09:27

I think Su, Timmy Mallett and Mr Motivator should start a you tube fitness channei for the over 50's.
She made hi-de-hi, I watched the last episode a couple of years ago, wish i saw it 40 year ago.

PatriciaRocks · 16/04/2026 09:28

"Hi-De-Hi" is an absolute classic. Her role as Peggy the chalet maid was such a lovely character. I admired her ambition to be a Yellow Coat!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 16/04/2026 09:29

Mr Motivator is fabulous. He comes on Cbeebies sometimes.

Weeelokthen · 16/04/2026 09:31

Have you seen Floella Benjamin, bloody hell, there's a woman who looks decades younger.

PottingBench · 16/04/2026 09:33

I've just watched the Pilgrimage series with her in too and absolutely loved her.

The people she was with were all much younger than her but she kept up with them without fail without a word of complaint.

They all loved her and really bonded with her despite her being old enough to be their gran. She's warm, energetic, interested, clever, interesting, honest and full of empathy. To the poster who said they thought she'd be unable to read the room - on the basis of these shows I would say that appears the absolute opposite, she listens intently to other people and is happy to take a back seat as much as she will lift the group just when they need it.

I found her a complete inspiration. Hope she reads this thread.

As an aside, the Pilgrimage shows are absolutely lovely TV. Travel, scenery, great people and utterly watchable even if you have no interest in faith at all.

I saw her at the Coronation, and was impressed then! She always looks fantastic.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/04/2026 09:33

Loved her on Hi de Hi, childhood memories.

BestIsWest · 16/04/2026 09:38

Hi-de-hi is on ITVX. I watched it all last year. The cast are so talented and it’s still funny, sweet and sad.

OvernightBloats · 16/04/2026 07:57

She comes across as someone who doesn't take life too seriously, the opposite of an anxious worrier. This optimism combined with her inner confidence are great qualities to have. I admire her unique style - she carves her own path and doesn't care about what other people think.

Also, it looks like she is not a sun worshipper so has good skin for her age.

Edited

Im and anxious worrier.

Your post makes me see things differently. Thank you.

wheresthespuds · 16/04/2026 09:43

she is just wonderful! I absolutely adore her.

indnt have Facebook but would absolutely love to watch her, Mr Motivator, Timmy Mallet and Floella Benjamin!

as for @LiviaDrusillaAugusta, talk about not being able to read the room… 😜

JacknDiane · 16/04/2026 09:44

@PottingBench, I've recently watched the Pilgrimage show with Ashley Banjo, it was very good. I didn't realise it was a series, thanks for that, I'll look it up.

I come from Nottingham where she is a total legend, as she also hails from there (and actually has the proper local accent, which is quite rare to hear on telly). Have interviewed her for the local paper and she was brilliant. And a proper professional to boot.

Came here to say similar actually - interviewed hundreds of celebs for the local paper in my time, and Su was the only one, ever, to pick up the phone and enthusiastically greet me by my name before we started.

She got it wrong (honest mistake, started with same letter though 😂) but that she made the effort at all was a lovely touch that said a lot about her as a person. I think she’s great.

confusedlots · 15/04/2026 23:52

I follow Timmy Mallet on Facebook and he is the same. I just looked it up and he is age 70. Such energy and enthusiasm and he finds joy in the smallest things. You can’t fail to feel uplifted watching his videos cycling around on his bicycle and having such positivity and enthusiasm for life.

I was listening to a podcast today on my commute and they were talking about finding purpose in the process of working towards your goals, not in the goal itself. And I think that’s what people who have such a positive attitude to life have, they enjoy the process of working towards their goals and if they achieve them, well that’s just a bonus. I think I could learn a lot from people like them.

@confusedlots Can you recall the podcast or who was on it - I’m on the look out for something less
dry than my current business themed ones.

Quite. However, it's the only negative remark in an otherwise lovely thread, which is something on MN! 😊

I love those Pilgrimage programmes.
You are right, she was delightful.
It's the journey, not the destination.

The one with Ashley Banjo is the only one I've not seen. I'm going to start it today with happy anticipation.

All the series are here. Enjoy!

Su is on the Portugal pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage

Celebrities take a journey of a lifetime. They all have different faiths and beliefs - will stepping in ancient footsteps on a spiritual journey broaden minds?
