She's full of energy, enthusiasm, so happy and positive

Im a right misery in comparison and decades younger.

The remaining crew who are still with us who were involved with any Perry and Croft (& Jeremy Lloyd) shows - Dad's Army, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Hi-De-Hi, Allo Allo, You Rang M'Lord, Oh Dr Beeching - meet up and do events together across the UK, often at the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford (yes, such a place does exist!) Su is there, and is always delightful.

During the pandemic the late Frank Williams who played the vicar in dad's Army turned 90. A birthday event was organised for him and all the gang were there. My daughter and I were due to attend and then she got Covid and we missed it. A friend of mine who was a minor cast member happened to be filming when Su learnt of this, she was genuinely sad for my 12 year old missing out, so she told Frank and then filmed him on her mobile phone recording a message for my daughter, saying he was so sad his youngest fan hadn't been able to make it but he hoped to see her very soon. Su passed it to me via the daughter of Von Smallhousen (if you know you know 😀 ) who was an organiser of the event. That's the sort of thoughtful person she is (and to be honest, all the Croft/Perry gang are like that. Utterly, utterly decent.)

She is totally manic! But I do sometimes wonder if she does not go flat when in the privacy of her own home and there is a sad person underneath.

She's genuinely not like that. Those madcap moments are extraordinarily few and far between. She's actually very calm, measured and thoughtful IRL. Quietly upbeat and content.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 16/04/2026 12:53

She was such a big star in 1985 that she was interviewed at Live Aid 😀

(I so want to do a Michael Caine "Not a lot of people know that" 😆)

(Edited as link was playing up)

FIFIBEBE · 16/04/2026 12:56

As others have said, passed by her a few times at Kings Cross, always looks happy, positive and dressed in full Sue. A joy to witness.

DrEmilyCrabtree · 16/04/2026 12:57

I lovee her! Right from Hi de Hi and You Rang M'Lord (which has stood the test of time IMO). Was so pleased to see her live show last year, which was a totally joyous evening

Mydogisagentleman · 16/04/2026 12:58

Can't stand her. The 'oooh look at me, I'm so whacky' would wear thin quickly

When she does panto she does masses for local charities/appeals, I’ve been told.

She was in a panto in our area and a group of school kids were in the cast with her. On the last night she treated them all to a meal in a local restaurant and everybody said she was just a genuinely lovely person who had time for everyone.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/04/2026 14:41

You Rang M’Lord is huge in Hungary - they have conventions and everything!

I was once incredibly confused by Vogue Williams not being Venus Williams.

😂😂

I dont know where someone finds the energy to be like her

I find there's a common theme with older people who appear younger than others around them....... they never had children!

Totally agree - it’s so full on.

Disturbia81 · 16/04/2026 17:15

My friend bumped into her and she was exactly as bouncy as she is on tv

Because I don’t think Su Pollard is the most amazing person on the planet? Okay then…

Rowgtfc72 · 16/04/2026 18:51

Su Pollard filmed 'Walking on Sunshine' at my home town of Cleethorpes.
Its brilliant 🙂

I loved her in Hi-De-Hi, You Rang M'Lord and Oh Dr Beeching. Although they were all light comedic roles there are a couple of moments in each where she was required to show pathos and her serious acting ability comes through clearly.

I saw her once at a train station about 25 years ago but I was dashing and a bit starstruck (which is hilarious as I've worked with senior government staff who are far more famous, but then they weren't a part of the joyful moments of my childhood 😀) I didn't go up and speak to her which I always regretted...then she brought her one woman show to my local theatre last year. She was genuinely interesting, I had no idea just how much work she's done over the decades, the stories she has to tell were fantastic. She was also subtly hilarious - I expected more of a pratfall humour but hers was far more developed and sophisticated. I recommended her show to a couple of friends who, under sufferance, took their older relatives to see it, and were surprised to find that they enjoyed the show as much as their mother/grandmother/great aunt.

I took my shy Autistic 12 year old daughter with me, we met Su at the end and she could not have been more lovely or more caring or understanding. There was a young girl in attendance dressed in a similar style to Su, she told her she was her heroine, that she wanted to get into the same career as Su, and Su spent ages just quietly chatting to her, giving her advice, taking her seriously, advising her parents how best to support her. It was a masterclass in professionalism and kindness.

She's making a new podcast called James and Ivy, a spin-off from You Rang M'Lord, with Jeffrey Holland, Susie Brann, John D Collins and Perry Benson if anyone's interested.

@Arlanymor She's written and composed a song called I'm Su Without An E which she performs in her one woman show! Totally agree with the spelling (same with my own name)

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta She's very different IRL when she's just talking to one or a handful of people - very calm, measured, conversational, almost quiet.

@Underthegreenwoodtrees I couldn't agree more.

@AnnieLummox She absolutely should be a Dame.

You're so right about her acting and ability to show pathos

In the 90s I used to go as a guest of one of our actor neighbours to recordings of BBC programmes at Wood Lane and the get-together parties. A number of times the audience used to clap in admiration at Su Pollard's emotional performance when saying sad but comedic lines. We weren't supposed to clap!

I met her a number of times and yes she was a bit full-on but very genuine and I remember remarking at the time how beautiful she was beneath the crazy glasses and persona - she had a lovely face

RaraRachael · 16/04/2026 19:07

I saw her in panto in Aberdeen probably around 1998ish so she wouldn't have been mega young.
I remember thinking what great legs she had 🤣

TidyDancer · 16/04/2026 19:57

Like some other posters, I also saw her one woman stage show last year and I thought she was fabulous. Utterly bonkers but brilliant. I had a great time and would absolutely go again. Didn’t stop laughing!

likelysuspect · 16/04/2026 20:55

Ive just googled this show, I reckon I will go and see it if she does any dates this year, or next, god willing

If you were to watch her on Pilgrimage I think you might change your opinion of her. She was absolutely not 'look at me, I'm so whacky'. Just down to earth, warm and quietly one of the group.

The problem is that she had built a career on being ‘whacky’ and loud and it’s hard to take to people like that.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 17/04/2026 09:26

@Westfacing I was interested to hear her stories of being cast in Godspell by Cameron Mackintosh, and how she'd also directed in the theatre herself. I think she'd have been great as a straight actor had she taken such roles, and that would have diminished the perception some members of the public seem to have of her as light only, or unremittingly flamboyant. As many posters who have met her have said, this isn't the entirety or even a particularly large part of who she actually is IRL.

She's not loud. She's a positive ebullient woman. I don't know why that's a problem.

She was lovely. So often women, especially older women are judged, and if they're confident or sassy or funny
... it's a problem.

bogginbluesticks · 17/04/2026 10:12

@Weeelokthen oh I adored Floella when I was a kid! She's got such a warmth. Don't know much about Su Pollard really but might be inspired to seek her out off the back of this thread.
