Old enough to remember whole years in which I barely thought about the American president.

USS Dwight D Eisenhower fire: Another aircraft carrier hit by blaze
Three sailors were injured Tuesday when a small fire broke out aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by the ship’s crew working alongside shipyard personnel, according to Chessie Bray, spokesperson for Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. The injured sailors were treated by the ship’s medical team and returned to full duty. No further details were released about the cause of the fire or the nature of the injuries.

Downing Street knew Peter Mandelson had failed security vetting for the US ambassador role seven months ago – when concerns were first raised with No10 by The Independent.
This publication revealed on 11 September last year that MI6 had failed to clear the then-Labour peer, largely because of concerns over his business links to China.

Those concerns were put to No10, but the then-director of communications, Tim Allan, insisted: “Vetting done by FCDO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] in normal way”.
Now, Downing Street is attempting to claim that Sir Keir was only made aware of the issue this week when documents detailing his appointment came to light.
The prime minister has said it was “staggering” and “unforgivable” that he had not been told earlier, adding he was "furious".
he prime minister has said it was “staggering” and “unforgivable” that he had not been told earlier, adding he was "furious".
But Tory shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Alex Burghart has accused Downing Street of lying about the situation now.
He said: “Downing Street was told in September - by no lesser authority than The Independent - that Mandelson had failed his vetting. For the PM to pretend now that he didn’t know beggars belief. This is cover-up after cover-up, lie after lie. We cannot trust this prime minister’s words or his judgement. It is time for him to face the music.”

A Labour MP also told The Independent it "looks like he (Starmer) might be toast".
The concerns raised by this publication came on the same day Sir Keir sacked Lord Mandelson over his links with the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
According to a former senior cabinet minister, any security concerns would have been raised privately between the head of MI6, the foreign secretary and the prime minister as part of normal practice.
But Downing Street now claims that the FCDO’s foreign secretary, Olly Robbins, failed to do that – a decision that led to his sacking last night. Nevertheless, Downing Street was aware in September when the matter was raised by The Independent

I am beyond furious that Starmer had the nerve to blame and fire the civil servant.
Starmer is only furious that all this has come out.

Or maybe because he has been lied to. Funny how even politicians may dislike that – especially when it may lead to them being hounded out of office.

Trump: Iran's enriched uranium will be brought to the US

RafaistheKingofClay · 17/04/2026 20:24

The enriched uranium they destroyed last year?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/04/2026 20:38

RafaistheKingofClay · 17/04/2026 20:24

The enriched uranium they destroyed last year?

Yup, that'd be it.

logicisall · 17/04/2026 20:56

Israel has broken the ceasefire by hitting an ambulance. So is the strait now open or closed?

logicisall · 17/04/2026 21:00

But as Israel said it was keeping its troops in Lebanon and Lebanon said it cannot agree to a ceasefire that gives territory to Israel, was there ever a ten day ceasefire?

dapsnotplimsolls · 17/04/2026 21:03

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/04/2026 20:38

Yup, that'd be it.

He's going to keep it in the ballroom bunker.

logicisall · 17/04/2026 21:09

It's turning into a Monty Python sketch...

MushMonster · 17/04/2026 21:22

Very much!
UK TV channel ITV has launched a new series called Secret Service....
I only heard a bit of the trailer and it looks like based on current affairs...
Who can write up anything any better than what is going on?

MushMonster · 17/04/2026 21:24

Is the uranium passing through the Strait? Out of an Iranian port?
Do we want to bet that the US blockade team sinks it? Oooops

dapsnotplimsolls · 17/04/2026 21:24

Just watching HIGNFY - Trump has actually told the Cabinet they all have to wear the same shoes???

We were told a while ago (back in January) that not only had he done this, he had got someone to buy the shoes for them, and Rubio's were way too large for him.

logicisall · 17/04/2026 21:38

I think there was even speculation at the time that Trump was deliberately getting the wrong size as a 'prove your loyalty by wearing them anyway' test!!!

Trump: Iran's enriched uranium will be brought to the US

I suspect he is confused because the Uranium is 60% enriched, but his bank balance has only been 30% enriched. He want's it interrogated to find it's secret.

RedTagAlan · 18/04/2026 03:08

What a clusterfuck. From the CNN feed:

"The Treasury Department on Friday issued another waiver allowing the delivery and sale of sanctioned seaborne Russian crude, as the administration tries to alleviate the prices amid the ongoing war with Iran.
The license, found on the US Treasury website, applies exclusively to Russian crude and petroleum products loaded on vessels as of April 17 and authorizes the shipments through May 16.
The administration previously issued a license on certain Russian crude, but the waiver expired on April 11."

And then the very next story on the same feed :

"US forces will pursue Iran-linked ships in waters well outside the Middle East, Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday, specifically mentioning the Indo-Pacific.
The Pacific region, especially anchorages in and around the Strait of Malacca, is home to some of the largest concentrations of the dark fleet tankers that move illegal or sanctioned oil from countries like Iran, according to Lloydslist.com."

So now Russian tankers that the US was seizing a few months ago can go about their business, but Iranian ships.....

From The Telegraph

Nearly every ship attempting to cross Hormuz turns back
Almost every ship that was making a break for the Strait of Hormuz has now made an abrupt U-turn, according to Marine Traffic data.
Around 35 vessels – including Chinese, Indian, and French-owned ships – were tracked sailing towards the maritime passage earlier this evening after the announcement that the conduit would be opened by Iran.
But nearly every ship has now turned around and begun heading back further into the Persian Gulf.
It is unclear what has prompted the vessels to turn around.

Iran: Enriched uranium will not be transferred to US
Iran’s foreign ministry has insisted that the Islamic Republic’s stockpile of enriched uranium will not “be transferred anywhere”.
Earlier today, Donald Trump claimed his administration would work with the Iranian leadership to extract the radioactive element and take it the United States.
The US president told Reuters the process would be undertaken “at a nice leisurely pace” as part of an agreement with Iran.
But Esmaeil Baqaei, a spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry, denied Mr Trump’s claim, stating: “Iran’s enriched uranium is not going to be transferred anywhere.”

No one saw this coming, of course.

TiredCatLady · 18/04/2026 07:33

@logicisall its an absolute shitshow. And yes, Monty Python except it’s not funny because at least two of the players have nukes.

Re shipping stopping again and the Uranium rebuke: Donald tantrum incoming in 3, 2, 1…

Re the Strait of Malacca

China is carrying out an extensive ocean-mapping and monitoring programme across the Pacific, Indian and Arctic oceans, collecting data that naval experts believe could significantly enhance its submarine warfare capabilities against the United States and its allies. The effort, involving dozens of research vessels and hundreds of underwater sensors, is not limited to scientific research. A new detailed investigation by Reuters says

Can't wait to see what happens when the US tries to take an Iran-linked ship belonging to China's shadow fleet.
