Old enough to remember whole years in which I barely thought about the American president.

Off subject sorry. If it's all sorted subject to the usual, does that mean Starmer can come back and deal with the Mandelson thing ?

Judging by the interviews he's giving about Mandelson, I very much doubt it. His stance so far has been it wasn't his fault because no-one told him Mandelson hasn't passed vetting.

If the SoH really is open for business it'll be one less headache for him.

Mandelson passed vetting. The decision to pass him was made by the relevant committee. Issues were raised during vetting but not discussed beyond the committee itself.

Because it would have been beyond improper to divulge vetting details to a political associate of Mandelson such as .... Keir Starmer.

I think we have reach the tunneling effect arena!

Ships leave port............. appear at destination. Never ever passed by the Americans (whistles....)

(Basically, electrons pass from surface A to surface B- like crossing a river let's say- through a single point where they cannot possibly be- no bridge- because that would mean their kinetic energy is negative E = (1/2)mv2 (half of the product of the mass and the speed squared, so impossible!). The science of the impossible LOL)

Whether the process is suitable is a different question.

Yet Starmer said this morning it was "staggering" he had not been told Mandelson had not passed vetting. Confusing.

All Iran has to do now is present the deal they signed with Obama on uranium as if it's Trumps idea, say it's amazing, and we are back to where we were before Trump set the world on fire.

Mandelson did not pass. He was not cleared by the MI6. That is what was published at back as September 2025. And until the public investigation does get access to the whole of paperwork and full witness statements, nobody can say otherwise. Mandelson is still under investigation for his sharing of sensitive information with Epstein.

What is crystal clear is that somebody had the intention of profitting from Mandelson's dodgy deals.
And Starmer is or either plain stupid or, the most likely option, one of the people benefitting somehow from Mandelson's asset information oversharing and close links to Epstein circle. Even if it was just polically, to put in an US ambassador that Trump was friendly with. It is not looking good. At all. And it was not looking good back in September, or February, or when McSweeny got his phone stolen....

There's a bit more to that than fuel costs from what I'm hearing.

Supposedly were industrial relations and other issues around profitability.

Fuel costs are only part of the reason and a handy excuse.

Yes, I seem to have been seeing hints here and there about that, so I wasn’t surprised to see this latest piece of news, true.

Indeed!
It is a bit like a magic trick.

I just hope that the ceasefires do hold, with no bombings or shootings (an actual ceasefire!), and they do sign a peace treaty.

I had assumed NATO was using Royal Mail as DJT appeared so keen on the art letter writing just the other day. When he was explaining all of the letter writing going on and was rather hopeful he had better SPAG without a character limit than in his online rantings. The Royal Mail would have explained the delay experienced in DJT receiving the offer of help and I am positive it was written on BB letter writing paper, just to show DJT he is indeed the bestest bigliest and most special person Nato knows.

It is like everything that is wrong with the world is linked.
Epstein is a key point. All that sphere of rich out of anyone's league elite. Corrupted to the bone. All at the top of politics, in charge of world policies, national budgets and very fond of their brokers.
I did not know about Lammy.... humm.
Some think he may replace Starmer if the Mandelson shitshow kicks him out.
So we will be back at the very same point if he is indeed linked to Vance and company.
I think we are better choosing our next door neighbour, at random, for PM, at this point. At least they will be free of ties to Epstein's world!

I wonder if Epstein had ties to Eton school......

Anything to add to this?

Trump: "The Failing NYT, FAKE NEWS CNN, & others, just don’t know what to do. They are desperately looking for a reason to criticize President Donald Trump on the Iran situation, but just can’t find it. Why don’t they just say, JOB WELL DONE, MR. PRESIDENT, & start to gain back their credibility???"

Ok, we shall see how our bets age.
I reckon we will find soon enough.

Downing Street knew Peter Mandelson had failed security vetting for the US ambassador role seven months ago – when concerns were first raised with No10 by The Independent.
This publication revealed on 11 September last year that MI6 had failed to clear the then-Labour peer, largely because of concerns over his business links to China.

Those concerns were put to No10, but the then-director of communications, Tim Allan, insisted: “Vetting done by FCDO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] in normal way”.
Now, Downing Street is attempting to claim that Sir Keir was only made aware of the issue this week when documents detailing his appointment came to light.
The prime minister has said it was “staggering” and “unforgivable” that he had not been told earlier, adding he was "furious".
he prime minister has said it was “staggering” and “unforgivable” that he had not been told earlier, adding he was "furious".
But Tory shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Alex Burghart has accused Downing Street of lying about the situation now.
He said: “Downing Street was told in September - by no lesser authority than The Independent - that Mandelson had failed his vetting. For the PM to pretend now that he didn’t know beggars belief. This is cover-up after cover-up, lie after lie. We cannot trust this prime minister’s words or his judgement. It is time for him to face the music.”

A Labour MP also told The Independent it "looks like he (Starmer) might be toast".
The concerns raised by this publication came on the same day Sir Keir sacked Lord Mandelson over his links with the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
According to a former senior cabinet minister, any security concerns would have been raised privately between the head of MI6, the foreign secretary and the prime minister as part of normal practice.
But Downing Street now claims that the FCDO’s foreign secretary, Olly Robbins, failed to do that – a decision that led to his sacking last night. Nevertheless, Downing Street was aware in September when the matter was raised by The Independent

Starmer did not lie and has not considered quitting over Mandelson row – Jones

Lord Peter Mandelson was appointed UK ambassador to the US despite failing vetting by security officials.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2026 19:13

Mandelson passed FCDO vetting. They did not pass on concerns.

BREAKING: Sources say Olly Robbins felt bound by the rules of the security vetting process NOT to tell the PM, No10 or the foreign secretary about the concerns raised about Mandelson

That means it appears No10 WERE in fact unaware he had issues with his vetting

And sources say in fact Mandelson DID NOT simply fail his vetting. Instead issues were raised and the FCDO security team and ultimately Robbins had to make a decision on whether to grant him DV clearance. It was their decision and there was no “overturning,” sources say

As @SamCoatesSky reports via former security official Ciaran Martin, Robbins was prohibited from sharing information about what happened with anyone outside the FCDO security team

Sources say the point of the vetting process is that it is extremely invasive and people who go through it must be confident they can tell the whole truth and not have highly embarrassing information about their personal lives leak or be spread around colleagues

That means the circle of people allowed to know about what happens in each vetting case is very small and the information is highly privileged

The decision on whether to approve Mandelson’s clearance, according to the vetting rules, is taken by a small team of FCDO security officials and ultimately Robbins, sources say

Under no circumstance is Robbins or that team able to share the details of the vetting case with No10 or anyone else, sources say. Robbins felt he could not share it with any minister or private office, sources say

It appears the PM and No10 were unaware of how these rules were perceived by Robbins and FCDO, and think he should have told them. Allies of Robbins think it is unfair he was sacked

But crucially it appears right now that Robbins did not tell No10 and they were actually in the dark about all this until Tuesday. What an unbelievable mess
