Is it easier to look well put together if you are slimmer?

Do you think it's easier, in general, to look smart/nice/well put together if you are slimmer? Or do we perceived that slimmer people look 'better' because of ingrained 'fat phobia' or whatever you want to call this particular bias.

As a fatty, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm disabled with low mobility. No WLI on the NHS, even though I fit the criteria, and I can't afford private. I hate the rolls with a passion, on me, or anyone else. I don't judge the others though, there's usually a reason.

If it’s any consolation I have been on WLI for years and haven’t lost any weight

You hate them on others but you don’t judge? How does that work?🤔

Nellodee · 09/04/2026 23:59

When you’re bigger, you need to put in a real effort to pull off a good outfit. When you’re smaller, skinny IS the outfit.

So it really isn’t worth it then? What with the rolls of fat etc? However much effort you put in, it’s not going to pass muster

AnSpideog · 10/04/2026 00:07

Yes absolutely, clothes often hang nicely on a skinny body. Having small boobs helps too. I was completely flat chested before I had kids; which i hated, but I could throw on anything.

It doesn’t mean you can’t look nice. Being well groomed helps. I’m about a stone overweight now but I keep my hair nice, my nails are done, I wear clothes that suit me. I think I look alright. And I see bigger women looking great. It’s all about having a sense of style, I keep it simple and chic but I am envious of bigger women who dress amazingly.

I think when you get older having good skin starts to really count. And maintaining a level of fitness at any size is so important.

What, why? Why would you stay on for years and pay all that money and not lose weight. I ask as you call them weight loss injections. So obvs not taking for diabetes.

I need to know more too!

I’m the same. I hate my own fat but don’t judge others. Obesity is rarely as simple as eating too much. Ons has to have the. head space to tackle it. Besides, I judge people on their character, not on their looks.

CatrinVennastin · 10/04/2026 07:35

I’d say yes however another poster commented on seeing a larger woman in Italy looking amazing in a linen dress. I think part of it is that in the UK the clothes we buy from the high street are crap quality, lots of polyester (even M&S is sneaking it in under “recycled”) and synthetic fibres just don’t hang as well or last as well as natural fibres do.

AllotmentTime · 10/04/2026 07:39

I'm going to differ. Slim is not the answer to everything if your proportions are shit. I'm a size 12-14 now but have spent most of my adult life trying to not look pregnant even at size 8, because a tiny chest accentuates my stomach in so many clothes. Breast cancer treatments have all made it worse.

It had not cost a penny, I am taking it for diabetes. As well as regulating my blood sugar, it is supposed to help lose weight,

I was reassuring the PP that the injections aren’t always a miracle cure,

Surely that is contradictory

Yes, also if you’re smaller chested I think, so hard to look well together when chesty I think, certain outfits sure, but what I’d give to wear a nice silk blouse. My chest makes my whole body look so much bigger than it is. I look great in lingerie, alas that’s not a good look for the workplace…

100%. Despite losing 3 stone (again), tgis time round my boobs do not want to seem to reduce in cup size. My back size has gone down. Im seriously considering reduction surgery as I look so out of proportion and look a couple of sizes bigger than I am.

I'm not skinny around a size 12 -14 but even now it's a lot easier choosing clothes than being a 16-18. Ive just been away and it felt effortless choosing what to wear unlike when im bigger when it feels such a mental grind.

I’ve read about this recently and they don’t always cause weightloss in people medicating for diabetes, can’t remember all the reasons, there was a long list.

FlatErica · 10/04/2026 08:16

Absolutely.

Exactly the same, I’m seriously considering surgery. It’s frustrating because I look absolutely fine and in proportion in a bra, but as soon as you put clothes on me I look comical.

ClassicalQueen · 10/04/2026 08:19

Yes it’s easier, as a lot of it is perception. There is a biological preference to slimmer people as they are likely to be fitter.

TappyGilmore · 10/04/2026 08:20

Yes definitely, I’ve always thought that. In my opinion, a large person will only look smart and well put-together in good, well-cut, expensive clothes, whereas a slimmer person can look good in much cheaper clothes.

But you need to diet on them, they don’t magic the fat off.

Often for diabetes they don’t move up the doses, which most need to do for weight loss, the objective is simply to control blood sugar. Plenty of diabetes patients lose on them, but like everyone they need to diet and what a lot do is buy privately as well so they can move up, so for example if they get 5mg free, they buy a 5mg pen and inject twice to get the 10mg.

Disturbia81 · 10/04/2026 08:32

when you’re slim you can look good in holey dirty slobs 🤣

applescentedcandle · 10/04/2026 08:38

When I was at my slimmest, BMI about 17, I was very unhappy (that's why I was controlling food so much), and wore oversized and very cheap clothes in colours that drained me - I did not look good, I looked uncared-for and a bit ill.

So I agree with OP, but only to a point. I look more well put together now, at a stone over my ideal weight, because I'm in a better place and care about my clothes now.

Also I second the comment about posture making a big difference.

landlordhell · 10/04/2026 08:41

Yes amd height too. There’s a reason models are tall and slim. Boobs make outfits look more sexy and sometimes you don’t want to look sexy. However curves can make a dress. When I see Trinny digest tucking a jumper in, I laugh and I’m a size 10-12!
