Is it easier to look well put together if you are slimmer?

Do you think it's easier, in general, to look smart/nice/well put together if you are slimmer? Or do we perceived that slimmer people look 'better' because of ingrained 'fat phobia' or whatever you want to call this particular bias.

Yep, literally look fantastic in a black bag if I wore a belt

it’s really fucking annoying how hard I had to work before when I was fat to not look homeless

GameOfJones · 09/04/2026 20:59

It is definitely easier. I've lost 4.5 stones and dropped from a size 16 to a 10 and clothes fit and hang much more nicely on me now. I agree with the boobs comments too, the one part of my body I was sad to lose weight from was my bust....but being smaller chested is also easier when clothes shopping. I can wear shirts now for one thing and a v neck or wrap top doesn't automatically look indecent on me!

IMO it's more about proportions than weight. Eg: Nigella at her heaviest always looked fab because she's an hourglass.

You can be a size 8 apple shape with short legs and no waist and it'll be hard to dress.

Nigella was a max 16 at her biggest and corseted up to hell. She’s normally a 12.

applescentedcandle · 09/04/2026 21:13

I remember Nigella describing her legs (a while ago, she may have changed since then) as like "a shotputter's gone to seed". But she always looked well put together, perhaps because she generally wore long straight skirts.

Yes.

I ‘d say no, but it is easier if you have straight hair

But straight hair doesn’t mean nice hair?

I agree. I have curly hair which I really like, but like a lot of curly hair it takes a lot of effort.

To me people with straight hair can brush their hair and it returns to how it always is within a minute. Basically they don’t have to do anything.

MxCactus · 09/04/2026 22:07

A lot of people saying this is about proportions - I'm an hourglass shape, and while I think I can get away with looking pretty good with an overweight BMI (bigger boobs and bum) I still think I look the best when I'm slim!

Arraminta · 09/04/2026 22:19

It's true about proportions too. Thanks to breast cancer + WLI I've gone from a 34G to a 32E and tops look sooooo much better on me because they hang properly.

TurquoiseDress · 09/04/2026 22:23

Definitely yes 100%!

I was slim size 8/10 from my teens, 20s 30s & early 40s….now the other side of 45 & (I think) perimenopausal, I really struggle to dress myself nowadays

Previously most things would look good, I’d not give it much thought, even just jeans & T-shirt combination would look nice

But now I’m so cautious about what I wear, checking if my bum looks awful or my fat tummy or fat arms look terrible…sigh

I’m short (just under 5ft 3in) & weighed myself the other week & I’ve hit 70kg…would love to lose 10kg but trying to find out, not keen on diets, just healthy eating & exercise…was reading about WLIs but would rather not plus my BMI would need to be much higher

nothingcangowrongnow · 09/04/2026 22:25

Tallish eg 5ft7 and about size 10 is pribably the easiest for looking stylish. If only that was me!

KerryPippin · 09/04/2026 22:26

I actually posture is even more important.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 09/04/2026 22:32

Hmm. I think it’s more about shape and proportions. I’m slim (size 8) and always have been, but have big boobs, a short waist and short legs. Nothing on earth is going to make me look good so the look I’m going for is basically ‘ignore my body, I’m a brain on a stick’. Very plain lines and plain colours intended not to draw attention.

Flowers898989 · 09/04/2026 16:42

Yes, as someone who has gone from 17 stone to 10 stone since Jan 25 100% it is so much easier getting dressed!!

That’s amazing 🤩 congratulations

nochance17 · 09/04/2026 22:34

Yes definitely

Portakalkedi · 09/04/2026 22:36

Yes, as clothing looks better and hangs as it should on slimmer frames. I say this as a fatty myself, and while I can look presentable I think, it takes more effort to think about proportions, fabric type, patterns etc.

Makemineacosmo · 09/04/2026 22:40

Absolutely. I am a stone overweight at the mo and god it makes a difference.

FirstdatesFred · 09/04/2026 22:47

Yes I think so to an extent. But also height and good hair are key factors!

TheM55 · 09/04/2026 22:54

It is a yes, and for those trying to lose a dress size or two, it improves with every pound I would say. On the flipside, for a polished look, I think other things DO matter (shoes and hair, accessories, make up, teeth) but also colour of clothing. I have been decluttering having gone down a size or two, and I have found a dress that I was longing to wear, which was a silk Boden dress in what I can only describe as "mink" - somewhere between pink, beige and grey. It now fits, but I have realised that the colour would be difficult for anyone to wear. Maybe someone 20 years younger, with tanned skin, but even then, it's an ask !

drippingsap · 09/04/2026 23:34

A lot of people saying this is about proportions - I'm an hourglass shape

proportions isn’t just shape though, it’s your torso length vs your legs, are your calves much slimmer than your thighs, do you have a long neck, dainty wrists etc.

corkscissorschalk · 09/04/2026 21:45

Only if they have nice straight hair though.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 09/04/2026 23:38

Yes - those of us who are fat tend to look like a sack of shit, whatever we do apparently

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 09/04/2026 23:43

Actually I was being facetious about it, but from the comments it would appear I am right! There seems little point in making an effort if you are bigger.

Itsjustmethatsall · 09/04/2026 23:50

ThisOneLife · 09/04/2026 17:02

There is no clothing that looks better when there are rolls of fat underneath.
Slim people always look better in their clothes.

I’m not one of them before anyone starts!

As a fatty, I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm disabled with low mobility. No WLI on the NHS, even though I fit the criteria, and I can't afford private. I hate the rolls with a passion, on me, or anyone else. I don't judge the others though, there's usually a reason.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 09/04/2026 23:53

So not much point in trying really…

Bloody hell this is depressing.
