Is it easier to look well put together if you are slimmer?

Do you think it's easier, in general, to look smart/nice/well put together if you are slimmer? Or do we perceived that slimmer people look 'better' because of ingrained 'fat phobia' or whatever you want to call this particular bias.

So one GP and anecdata online. You speak like you are an expert. Not even GPs or diabetic specialists all say the same. I have had conflicting advice in the past from two members of the same team about other things.

So you aren’t an expert at all - you don’t ‘know’ you are right. Because in this case you aren’t. Please don’t present yourself as having more knowledge than you do as it could be misleading. And there are gullible people who tend to take what they read on the internet as truth.

Ok I’ve clearly hit a nerve, which makes me wonder how honest you’re being, at no stage did I say I’m an expert. And I’m not about to sit and argue with you. But we will leave it at either you’ve a very high bmi, are not being honest, or your blood sugar was never controlled.

I don’t know if i ever look stylish or good, whether anything suits me etc when I look in a mirror. I wouldn’t know the difference.

Therefore I’m taking on board the general consensus about overweight people

And that's fair enough.

And still you are claiming to have knowledge to the point of calling me a liar 🤔

You haven’t hit a nerve, it’s just you look slighty dim arguing about something you only know about from a convo with one GP.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

And calling people dishonest when claiming to know about something is ironic 😂

I agree with this. I'm 5'7 and a size 6 and can pretty much wear what I want. The only problem is that with a lot of places they assume if you're a size 6 then you must only be 5'2 so leg and arm length are way too short

Many models are tall and wear size six, so it depends entirely on body type.

I am 5'8''....my clothes size can fluctuate between sz 10 and sz 16, depending on how I like to style my clothes. I am bigger busted, and I love to wear some jackets loose rather than tight, so clothes size isn't really an indication of how fat or thin someone is.

I do think being tall is a bonus when it comes to carrying clothes well.

SwatTheTwit · 10/04/2026 12:36

Absolutely. Your clothes also last longer :(

I used to be a size 10 and clothes definitely looked better on me at that size. Unfortunately I'm not big busted but I'd imagine trying to get a size 6 that fit in a bigger chest would be very difficult. I bet you look amazing in most clothes at 5'8 and size 10. I'm jealous, I hate being a 6

I think it depends on where you buy, on sites like Reiss or me and em, they are all tall and generally an 8 or a 10. Usually an 8.

a poster up thread nailed it I think, which is if clothes looked better on a size 16 or larger then the average clothes model would be that size. They are trying to sell them so they dress them on the bodies they look best.

id say average model for clothes retailers is about 5ft 9 or 10 and a size 8. Those models are picked carefully, they pick the best to show off the clothes.

and I think that’s why it makes it seem it’s easier to dress a smaller frame, as when larger the clothes look very different on to the way they look on the model, but when a similar size to the model and taller, they look the way they do on the model so our brains tell us that’s right.

100%. Despite losing 3 stone (again), tgis time round my boobs do not want to seem to reduce in cup size. My back size has gone down. Im seriously considering reduction surgery as I look so out of proportion and look a couple of sizes bigger than I am.

I'm not skinny around a size 12 -14 but even now it's a lot easier choosing clothes than being a 16-18. Ive just been away and it felt effortless choosing what to wear unlike when im bigger when it feels such a mental grind.

Edited

I had a breast reduction two years ago and it has been life changing.

Don't be so waspish. We know you're not really angry about the diabetes scenario. You're just pissed off because the overall consensus on here is that it's much harder for overweight people to look stylish.

But that's very much a you problem.

Im not angry at all. Being called a liar by someone who knows nothing is mildly irritating

Yes, of course.

MaudOHara · 10/04/2026 16:11

As someone who has gone from over 18 stone to just under 10 stone, I agree that less effort and thought is needed for someone who is slim to look put together.

But I would say that this is largely down to the fact that clothes are designed for women 5'9" and size 8 and then fabric added to it for larger sizes.

At my largest I had plenty of compliments on my clothes but I had to put thought and effort into planning an outfit and time and money on accessories / manicure / good haircut. I also had a couple of style consultations so that I chose colours / fabrics / styles and shapes that suited my body shape.

Now I'm a lot smaller, I can, as others have said, chuck on a jeans and t-shirt and I look fine. I could ramp up my effort to what I did at 18 stone and would probably look better than I do.

The current issue for some of us newly slim people is now to dress to hide the saggy skins on my arms / cleavage / legs so I am actually covering up my body more than I did at my largest.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 10/04/2026 16:14

Yes, it is easier.

I think the majority of us are never happy with how we look, I'm sure you look great.

I can't wear a sz10 uptop...not unless it has lots of lycra in it, and being tall, wearing high heels has limited me a bit....I would love to wear 5'' heels, but I would feel like a giant.
I am getting on now, but when I was young and very skinny I looked at curvier girls and thought they looked lovely, now I am curvy I would love to go braless, but would look like an ageing pornstar.
See, we are never happy. 😏

Yes I agree.
I think some of the chain stores, like M&S, are getting it very wrong over the last few years.
Apart from the styles, the lengths of some of the summer dresses are ridiculously long. I have tried on a couple of their maxi dresses and they trail on the floor; not all come in different lengths.
God knows how shorter women manage.

So bloody true 😂 when I was young and a size 10 I thought I looked chubby but looking back at old photos I looked amazing. Now I'm nearly 40 and a 6 I feel like I look too skinny so hate how I look😅 wish I could go back and shake my younger self

Could you put weight on if you tried?
My mum was very, very slim; she tried to gain weight but just couldn't, even though she had a healthy appetite.

Sometimes we just have to put up with what we have and make the best of it.

Firesidechatter · 10/04/2026 17:10

I think the other reason it’s easier when slimmer is when we are slim we wear the style of clothes we like. When we are heavier we wear clothes to hide and disguise. To not show the lumps and bumps. To disguise or draw the eye away from the fat bits we don’t like. Avoiding certain types of clothes as they make us look bigger.

that takes some thought. Very few people when they lose weight stay in the same style of clothes as they did when fat.

it’s a lot more stressful dressing a fat body. Or it was for me, at an 18, what fits, what hides etc, all black or dark colours. Now as an 8, it’s all about what I actually like. And never black.

Dogpootwo · 10/04/2026 17:11

Most definitely yes

No it's weird. After I had my son at 36 I had an overactive thyroid so was losing weight without trying. That's sorted now but no matter how much I eat I just can't seem to put weight on. It's bloody annoying 😅
