Is it easier to look well put together if you are slimmer?

Do you think it's easier, in general, to look smart/nice/well put together if you are slimmer? Or do we perceived that slimmer people look 'better' because of ingrained 'fat phobia' or whatever you want to call this particular bias.

Often for diabetes they don’t move up the doses, which most need to do for weight loss, the objective is simply to control blood sugar. Plenty of diabetes patients lose on them, but like everyone they need to diet and what a lot do is buy privately as well so they can move up, so for example if they get 5mg free, they buy a 5mg pen and inject twice to get the 10mg.

Thats not necessarily correct.

It is prescribed for diabetics and we don’t pay for prescription in England.

If you are overweight as well as diabetic, they up the dosage in the same way as for weight loss.

I think it depends on a lot of factors. I’ve gone from a size 16 to a 10 recently and whilst I would say it’s easier to find clothes I feel good in, I definitely don’t feel I looked a mess before. People would often comment that I looked stylish when I was bigger. But it was more difficult because I had the added pressure of having to hide certain parts of my body I didn’t like or just to choose clothes that didn’t make me look fat. I wore a lot of black! So being thinner definitely gives more choice of clothes and shops but it doesn’t mean if you’re larger you can’t look stylish and put together. There are lots of women on instagram that are showing outfits on larger sizes which can be helpful for ideas.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 10/04/2026 08:53

Yes definitely easier.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 10/04/2026 08:57

Looking stylish is only about looking good for other people (that’s why people say they feel better when dressed up - they think they present a better impression to the world).

So I suppose those of us overweight aren’t going to be ‘stylish’ to many people.

UniquePinkSwan · 10/04/2026 08:59

Usually but I think Kirsty Allsopp, hope I’ve spelt that correctly, always look amazing.

You’re saying your diabetic nurse upped the dose to help you lose weight past blood sugar control?

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/04/2026 09:03

I struggled to find my style when options are so limited in larger sizes. Many bigger women look amazing though so I think it’s probably a case of knowing what suits you, having money to invest in inclusive brands which have more ontrend options plus the fashion industry does favour very tall very thin women.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 10/04/2026 09:08

Yes, clothes look better on slim people. You can get away with jeans and a tshirt and still look good.

Every time she spoke to me on the phone she asked about my weight. She continued to up the dose to the maximum and said it would help me lose weight and she took me off insulin because my bloods were under control for several months.

Tbf she’s never set eyes on me so she only had my stats and readings to go on.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 10/04/2026 09:10

To clarify, my bloods were under control at a certain dosage and she continued to up it

Yes, and if you are taller, even better.

I actually think this bit is key.

Most pics of people in clothes you see are tall and thin. The tallness helps considerably.

I also thinking styling plays a huge part. I've generally always been slim, but I'm also only 5,1. I had a neighbour who was a very shaply lady, maybe 5 inches taller than me, but she really knew how to style herself and she just looked glam all the time. I was always jealous!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 10/04/2026 09:20

I’m a 14 top, 16 bottom (pre kids was an 10-12 so never been tiny but got bigger with age!!)
I think the secret is afew good key items like a nice blazer, tailored trousers, nice accessories etc….. I don’t have a huge budget for clothing but I buy from vinted and in sales etc….. I don’t buy expensive designer stuff unless in a charity shop or vinted but Ive come to the conclusion I’d rather have 20 really nice items that 50 items of stuff that doesn’t look anything.

Not necessarily. I make an effort with my outfits even when I know I won't be leaving the house that day.

That’s very very unusual.

I don’t think that’s true, I make an effort because it makes me feel good about myself, confident, I want to look good. I don’t do it so other people think I do. I also make an effort at home.

yes of course if you dress stylishly, In something current, well fitting, good quality, well laundered yoh make a better impression than if you’re clothes need a wash ans iron, are poor quality and fitting etc. but to say that means you only do it for other people would be very wrong for many.

and over weight people can be stylish. The op asked is it easier if slimmer, and yes for me and many others, being all different weights the answer is yes it is absolutely easier. But that doesn’t mean it’s not feasible if you’re fat.

In what way?

I assume you are a diabetic nurse or similar so could you give me a steer as to what the issue is please because I’m a little concerned

I agree with this. I'm 5'7 and a size 6 and can pretty much wear what I want. The only problem is that with a lot of places they assume if you're a size 6 then you must only be 5'2 so leg and arm length are way too short

Why the passive aggression, no I’m not a diabetes nurse as I’m sure you know.

ozempic and lately mounjaro, when used for diabetes is used to control blood sugar, it is rare a diabetes nurse will up doses and prescribe for weight loss also when blood sugar is fully controlled, as there is strict prescription controls on the drugs due to cost. In fact in general people are taken off them when blood sugar is controlled.

i am sure there is a back story here, as in your blood sugar wasn’t controlled or you have an incredibly high bmi so it was something they felt was the only option, but it is not routine.

Actually I wasn’t being passive aggressive. I assumed you had knowledge from a medical point of view as you sound well informed about the normal procedure.

How do you know all this? Is it just from general knowledge? It’s a genuine question.

Oh my from conversations with my gp when she recommended them, on how she prescribes and what the nhs allows, and from anecdotal evidence on line.

I know I’m correct, so there is something more here, either your weight is incredibly high or your blood sugar wasn’t controlled,

So one GP and anecdata online. You speak like you are an expert. Not even GPs or diabetic specialists all say the same. I have had conflicting advice in the past from two members of the same team about other things.

So you aren’t an expert at all - you don’t ‘know’ you are right. Because in this case you aren’t. Please don’t present yourself as having more knowledge than you do as it could be misleading. And there are gullible people who tend to take what they read on the internet as truth.

I don’t know if i ever look stylish or good, whether anything suits me etc when I look in a mirror. I wouldn’t know the difference.

Therefore I’m taking on board the general consensus about overweight people

HRTQueen · 10/04/2026 11:31

Absolutely

Also your body shape, I am curvy whatever size I am and short, and it is harder for me to look as well put together as my friends who are less curvy regardless of their height
