Mine is probably Ross Geller but I know not many people will agree with me! I love him.

How has no-one said Samwise Gamgee yet? He's mine. My favourite all time character.

This. I just watched The Return of the King with DH and DS and delivered a long speech -which nobody was interested in - on how Frodo and the Fellowship don’t appreciate enough how brave, loyal and selfless Samwise is!

Jem Merlyn
Phil Dunphy
Ron Swanson
Walter White and Jesse Pinkman
Tyrion Lannister

1000% husband material. I bet Rosie would never post on here complaining he doesn’t pull his weight around the hobbit-hole or goes drinking in the green dragon every night while she does the grunt work! Darling Sam 😍

I am spending today falling for Gabriel Oak after so many people mentioned him on this thread, I will be back to either curse you or thank you when I finish

No bad surprises with Gabriel Oak! He’s the reliable, terribly competent, no-fuss guy that you friendzoned and, even after you turned him down, he stuck around and did quietly useful things in a no-pressure way, while you made some really disastrous romantic choices…

I meant more I will hate you all for making me like him if he dies or doesn't get his happily ever after endiing 😂 I'm a bit cross that I didn't get a warning that I would be crying over sheep 😭😂

So many of mine have already been mentioned, but I'd like to add Thomas Nightingale (RoL) to the mix. And Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe. Also Jeeves.

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I LOVED the Bullerby children.

BlakeCarrington · 07/04/2026 22:57

I had a squabble with a great friend many years ago because she insisted Samwise was the true hero of LOTR, whereas I insisted it was Frodo. All these years later I realise she was right!

I used to like Mr Bennett in Pride and Prejudice because I could relate to him until someone pointed out (I think on another Mumsnet thread) that he had married a young girl he had nothing in common with because he fell for her looks and when he realised his mistake, he spent his marriage ignoring her or putting her down.
Plus he didn't take seriously the need for his daughters to have decent marriages before he died to avoid penury because of the entail.

Ever since I read that, I have disliked Mr Bennett and felt much more sympathy for Mrs Bennett.

Mr Bennett is an absolute shocker. Despite Austen explaining so clearly how badly he has failed his family, everyone just seems to think he’s hilarious for putting down his wife, who has to do everything, including trying to provide for their children.

What’s interesting is that Bingley and Darcy don’t share the general Mr Bennet love. You might think it’s part of Darcy’s snobbery, but he’s not wrong that Mr B makes a public show of Mary at the Netherfield ball and lets silly, oversexed Lydia go off to Brighton with only the inadequate chaperonage of the probably equally silly Mrs Foster. And that’s leaving aside entirely his treatment of his wife and his refusal to take his daughters’ futures seriously.

Even mild-mannered Bingley is surprised that when they shoot together Mr B isn’t a weirdo.

George Costanza from Seinfeld

the best ever sitcom character

Kester Woodseaves a travelling weaver who not only saves the disabled, lovely and abused Prue Sarne but also ties himself to a stake to take the place of the bull in a bull baiting fight. Prues character is also very interesting.

Precious Bane by Mary Webb is set in Shropshire. during the Napoleonic wars. and has a very old style vocabulary. It was dramatised when I was a teen on the BBC in the late 1980’s and I sought out the book. It was this book that started my collection of Virago modern classics. Cold comfort farm is a parody of this book, I also like this novel but think it a little unfair. I also love the book Year of Wonders about the plague village of Eyam seen through the eyes of Anna Frith, great character.

Yes, Mr Bennet is a proper shithead really. And it seems to endear him to some that he’s so unpleasant about some of his kids and clearly favours others, like?? That’s not a good man, at all! Poor Mrs B, her poor nerves indeed.

HatStickBoots · 08/04/2026 09:19

Another old fan of Jill Crewe and Ann Derry from Ruby Ferguson’s books. My favourite characters now are Winston Graham’s Ross Poldark and Lewis Carroll’s Alice.

RunsABit · 08/04/2026 09:49

This has got me nodding in agreement to so many characters and comments including the annoyingly passive second Mrs De Winter and the really rather cruel Mr Bennet - his treatment of Mrs Bennet and Mary is despicable.

George Kirrin (The Famous Five)
Nelly Dean (Wuthering Heights)
Lady Bracknell (The Importance of Being Ernest)
DCI Roberta Steele (Stuart Macbride's Logan Rae series)

Uncle Toby from Tristram Shandy and Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair
