Mine is probably Ross Geller but I know not many people will agree with me! I love him.

Gabriel Oak.

In love since I first read FFTMC 30 odd years ago. Refuse to watch film adaptations in case they spoil him for me.

Totally agree. Just so good, honest, manly and reliable. Wonderful character.

Buffy Summers, absolute legend.

I came here to say this.

And it's mostly because while she is an absolute legend, she's also so very human. She fucks up regularly, spectacularly. What makes her so awesome is that despite her flaws, she gets up every time and keeps kicking ass.

Equal first place goes to my namesake, Sir Samuel Vimes of the Ankh Morpork City Watch.

I agree with PPs about Gabriel Oak.

I'm currently rereading Jane Eyre. Thoroughly admire her as a child but by today's standards becomes rather 'judgy' as an adult.
Bridget Jones...both the book and film version. Daniel Cleaver. But only in the films where he is hilariously played by Hugh Grant.

MissMarianHalcombe · 07/04/2026 00:27

Miss Marple (as portrayed by Joan Hickson)

The four main characters in The Good Life (Tom, Barbara, Jerry & Margot)

Roberta (Bobby) in The Railway Children ~ I need a box of tissues to cope with her meeting her father at the station. "Daddy, my Daddy" gets me every time . . .
And the way she shepherds her siblings away from the house at the end of the film so her parents can have a private reunion is simply wonderful

The second Mrs de Winter in Rebecca

Mr Bennet in Pride & Prejudice - I love his dry wit

I used to like Mr Bennett in Pride and Prejudice because I could relate to him until someone pointed out (I think on another Mumsnet thread) that he had married a young girl he had nothing in common with because he fell for her looks and when he realised his mistake, he spent his marriage ignoring her or putting her down.
Plus he didn't take seriously the need for his daughters to have decent marriages before he died to avoid penury because of the entail.

Ever since I read that, I have disliked Mr Bennett and felt much more sympathy for Mrs Bennett.
