Is 100g of pasta too much for 1 person? I think not. Infact it is a lot less than i would usually cook.

And why I'm not overweight. I have always weighed pasta. I thought everyone did. I also measure rice by volume.

I weight rice every time. No one I know measures pasta. Because rice doesn't give the same amount of inner love and joy that a glorious amount of pasta does.

I weigh pasta because I can't judge the volume.

IMO 100 grams is a lot of pasta for a woman of my age and circumstances (67, active but with a sedentary job). 200 grams per person is way too much unless the diner is very active all day.

When I cook pasta for just DH and me I do 60 grams each. Pasta packets state 75 grams per person as a serving suggestion.

Wow! I just cooked spaghetti and did half a pack for two people so about 250g. Neither of us are overweight. Phew!

VanityUnit66 · 01/04/2026 20:18

I serve 125g each person. Mumsnet is crazy with the carb portion freak out.

I probably used to eat that much, but I don't eat as much as I used to now. I won't see 60 again and DH won't see 70 again. I think it is true that people's appetites decrease with age.

Some are, but packs of pasta recommend 75g per person, so 125 g is quite a lot.

Same. Who are these people that weigh pasta?!!😂

The same people that poke spaghetti through the hole in the spoon to check portions. Just whack it in the pan and enjoy 😋

Has nobody passed out cold from the amount of carbs yet?! Surely nobody eats that much pasta? I only eat 5 pieces and I’m full until Christmas! Nobody needs that many carbs, you’ll get diabetes! Eat more protein! Fuck off. Life’s too short to worry about how much your pasta weighs. 75g seems tiny once you start weighing it after being free and easy with it. Leaves more room for garlic bread though 😁

Nice.

Some people feel like life's too short to waste it overweight or feeling like shit, but they're not telling other people to 'fuck off' or what their priorities should be!

LillyLeaf · 01/04/2026 20:42

I am in no way a competitive under eater. I love my food, but I always weigh out 60g per adult, maybe 70g at a push. 100g Seems a lot but everyone's metabolism is different. There's no way I could get away with 100g.

Blorengia · 01/04/2026 20:45

100g is what my 6'4" tall, 15 stone son would eat.

LotusMandala · 01/04/2026 20:51

I do 125g per person. My kids eat every scrap and they are 10 and 12. And before anyone makes assumptions about weight, they are both tall and skinny.

75g would never be enough

WellyBellyBoo · 01/04/2026 20:54

I'd use 70-80g per person. I measure in handfuls when cooking as I know how many handfuls is enough for four of us. I can work out the weight based on how many meals a bag of pasta does

Well i"m 9 stone and would normally eat 125g if not more. O and i"m 5 ft 2.

A bag of 500g feeds a family of five here with dh getting more than everyone else

I’d always cook a full packet of rice and use the remainder to make egg fried rice the next day. I am curious if you weigh things out do you tend not to have leftovers? I have teenagers who tend to be thrilled at opening the fridge and finding “proper food” they can reheat.

A full packet of rice like 500g? No I weight stuff like pasta and rice out and rarely have leftovers. I do however make huge amounts of sauces that I'll cook fresh pasta or rice with and those are my deliberate 'cook once eat twice' meals.

pteromum · 01/04/2026 21:06

All relative I suppose.

I am cooking for lambing time at moment. I did 200 per lamber, 100 per cook or child over ten.

chucked in an extra bit for four under seven.

ran out of pasta. Plenty mince left. So have done another 500 for the two night shifts who will eat that in morning or during night.

But on a normal meal, yeah 100-150 per adult, kids whatever extra

Hi fellow 5 ft 2 👋Easily eat 125g in a go. You're fine.

Terfedout · 01/04/2026 21:16

Some pasta shapes can be deceptive. The large tubes can be about 12 to an 80g portion and it’s easy to go too far.
I like fusilli for making a good show out of a small amount, especially the Voiello variety.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 01/04/2026 21:20

For myself, I'd use roughly 1/5 bag so 100g but I wouldn't weigh it- just guess. If there's 4 of us I'd probably just cook the whole bag and there might be leftovers or there might not be depending on how we're feeling and what I'm making.

Why

Why? Because there are people that want to suck the joyout of pasta, the food of the gods.
