Is 100g of pasta too much for 1 person? I think not. Infact it is a lot less than i would usually cook.

Jesus, what an excessive reaction for my clearly jokey comment! Ffs. Are you here just looking for ways to be offended?

I don't weigh pasta because I don't really eat it. I'm not a fan myself. So you can lose the snidey overeating comment as well.

That notwithstanding, in my non mumsnet real life world no I don't know people who weigh pasta.

😁

For a main adult meal, I will cook 100g each. But we hardly ever have puddings/desserts, or even cakes and biscuits.

The recommended 75g just isn’t enough for us. And we’re not fat!

Similarly, when I occasionally buy ready made tortellini (usually spinach and ricotta) it says ‘serves 2’ on the pack, but I have to buy 2 and use another half.
I’ll have the other half for lunch the next day.

I do 125g per person. My kids eat every scrap and they are 10 and 12. And before anyone makes assumptions about weight, they are both tall and skinny.

75g would never be enough

Nowadays I will allow 100g each for Gdcs of 9 and 10, who are both tall and skinny, very active and growing like weeds.

Little one, 6, will want rather less.

I have a small tub with a line marked on it to measure 75g of dry pasta. It’s quite enough per portion.

DaffodilValley · 02/04/2026 12:52

The (useless) NHS nutrition course I was on last year said no more than 20g per person, which is ridiculous.
I now have 40g and feel guilty, but it seems a reasonable portion for someone of my height.

zingally · 02/04/2026 12:54

I quite often do a pasta bake recipe that calls for 200g of pasta. This ends up feeding 2 adults and 2 upper-primary aged kids comfortably. It is a bit bulked up with a bit of meat, fish or veg, but not massively so.
If I'm cooking for just me, I find a standard mug filled to the brim is enough when cooked.

For two people? 100g for 2!!
Not a chance

I didn't mention weighing the pasta, so I'm not sure what you mean?

20g as a main meal?!

Now, that is stingy.

for 5 adult sized people we cook a whole pack (500g)

cook with veg in cooking water (usually carrot or courgette) to bulk out. plus sauce & cheese.

very rarely we have leftovers

Forget pasta weight, am more flabbergasted by boiled courgette?? I love them, but never had them boiled in my life. Does it not just go to mush?

no, not mush in the 8min pasta cooking time. just soft

You don’t measure pasta portions with your scales. You measure it with your heart 🤣

franklymydearscarlett · 02/04/2026 23:46

I was wondering about this the other day as I cooked a pasta bake for teen DD and 3 friends and I used 600g, thinking there would be enough for me and DH as well, DS was away, and they ate it all 😂 I did garlic bread and broccoli on the side but it was a simple tomato sauce so maybe low on the protein.

I have teen DS as well and when it’s the 4 of us I often do a mac and cheese with kale and cauliflower like the one in Pret, which we all like. For this I do 350g of pasta and about half a head of cauliflower, I might add other veg if I have it. We have it with garlic bread and that always seems to be enough.

RampantIvy · 02/04/2026 16:58

Now, that is stingy.

It was madness. You are supposed to have vast amounts of protein or vegetables to make up for it.
It’s a whole different discussion, but it’s a programme I was sent on when I asked for help with weight loss and turned out to be utterly inappropriate for my medical needs, plus I ended up putting on more weight. The fact that the NHS are funding it (and I noticed that MN were promoting it a while ago) is shocking.

DragonsAndDaffs · 03/04/2026 08:54

I always cook the whole bag so that we have leftovers in the fridge or freezer. My adult kids love a pasta salad for work.
I'm tracking what I eat and weigh mine cooked.

In Italy it's usually 80g per person. Pasta is a first course designed to fill you so only need a small amount of the more expensive second course which is a bit of meat or fish.
