Whilst they're shaking things up please can they retire Tony Blackburn? He's got be about 120 years old.

I love Tony because he makes me feel like it’s about 1984 again!

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2026 18:43

I like Tony Blackburn! His a legend isn’t he.
Apart from a bad break up with his ex years ago now , he hasn’t had any kind of scandal (that I’m aware of anyway ! )

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/03/2026 18:44

The most shocking thing about this thread is the love for Gary Davies! Shock
He is a dreadful old throwback to Smashie and Nicey days. If anyone sounds like he's reading a script it's him. He talks like he's grinning the whole time and I just cannot stand it, even for a second.

For pp and anyone else shocked by his salary, feast your eyes on this report into BBC salaries in 2017! Absolutely eye-popping. At least they've cleaned up their act in this regard a bit

😂😂 we need someone like him again!

I don't think I've got it exactly right, he was much funnier...

OonaStubbs · 30/03/2026 18:35

Just another reason why the BBC should be shut down.

Yawn.

Please dont let shaun keaveny (sp?) Replace him . He ruins every show he covers with his boring voice. Id be happy if they keep Gary on.

He has an ASMR voice, not a boring one.

I'll never forget him blubbing over Tessa and putting on Sister Sledge's He's the Greatest Dancer twice in a row. Not sure why. I mean, it IS a great track, but imagine a Radio 1 DJ doing that now!

Yawn.

Fair point though. Nobody in any other area of film, television, music, or theatre has ever been embroiled in a sex/drugs/noncing scandal...

Why should anyone be forced to retire? I love the fact he's older, it brings a range of different people to the table.

BBC have never found a suitable replacement for the 6.30 breakfast slot since Terry Wogan.

I completely agree. Such an ideal choice for the slot that they brought him back for a second go, which lasted longer than the first.

the80sweregreat · 30/03/2026 18:51

Tony was so upset over his Tessa. That was a ‘ news of the world ‘ exclusive for a while back then as she ran off with someone else I think.

storminabuttercup · 30/03/2026 17:19

I listen to the radio most of the day in between work calls.
today’s had a very weird vibe, the news landed in Vernons show, he probably knew at the start of his shift, none of the presenters have mentioned it apart from Jeremy who made some ref to it being breaking news and they would bring more as they had it.
Its been the first item on the news all day which I don’t get, its big but you know wars and stuff, but then maybe people would complain if it wasn’t

Jeremy Vine sounded genuinely shocked

Oh God - yes I can't bear her voice. Sort of blocked nose / adenoidy. But she seemed like a nice woman so I feel bad to say that. She had to put up with Scott each morning too ...

It's quite amusing when she talks about some congestion somewhere, and such and such being blocked.

You think the BBC would have sacked him without proof or without him admitting it? For they’re to be no suspension while an investigation happens, I would think he has admitted to it.

I don't know. They've been hammered and under pressure for acting too slowly about criminal conduct, and there's already a piece up on the BBC that talks about how this shows they're acting faster. Even though we don't know what the allegations are other than that they're historic and nothing has been said to suggest criminality.

I am actually not that confident that the BBC isn't taking a harsh line with high profile people for appearance's sake.

Olive123456 · 30/03/2026 19:00

Doesn't take muchto make you happy. Of course you could have opted to not listen to his shows.

YourMagentaCat · 30/03/2026 19:00

Starlight1979 · 30/03/2026 12:22

That's because Vernon and Sara are normal and not completely up their own arses. They can actually speak to listeners and engage with them and be interested in what they're saying.

Scott Mills comes across as a massive narcissist who is only interested in celebs.

They're both the most annoying presenters on radio 2! Sara and her odd way of saying things, Vernon messing around all the time sniggering with the travel woman. And for god's sake get Sally off the channel and put her on something else.

Scott Mills is a mystery.

Great news. I was wondering why he disappeared last week without any mention.

Hopefully now they can get somebody decent.

But who????
Loved Wogan but never to be repeated
Loved Zoe but she won't be back :-(
Rylan is fab but he doesn't want it full time does he?
Love Gary Davis (whooo)

Bichette · 30/03/2026 19:01

Radio 2 has rapidly declined since Simon Mayo left, then Ken, then Steve Wright (RIP). I don’t mind Gary Davies as an occasional stand in but not FT.

BeanQuisine · 30/03/2026 19:05

What's remarkable about this thread is that in 2026, there are still so many people who listen to the wireless.

It's like lifting an old stone and finding an unexpected thriving community of beetles underneath.

DrowningNotWaveing · 30/03/2026 19:06

Hope Vernon Kay doesn't get it!!!!! Cant stand him either

Very happy as I can't stand him

Deadly heinous crime. It’s literally impossible to be removed from your job in the BBC. Huw Edwards was a convicted pedofile & even that took about 4 years and 24/7 media harassment until they got rid of him

Moonbark · 30/03/2026 19:11

woah, the suggestion of Chris Evans is wild. Have you heard his show on Virgin recently? I have had that misfortune and he is sexist, misogynistic and wildly out of touch, no thanks.

Could they go in a (slightly) younger presenter direction - Matt and Molly, Fearne Cotton? maybe Lauren Laverne would move from 6music? I’d listen to all of them.
