I usually put a knob of butter but trying full fat mayo tonight due to accidentally opening two jars, so need using up. Wondering if I am missing other good alternatives?

Sometimes, I make sweet potato mash, the I put a little dark soya sauce and chopped green onions in the mix.

Quark, makes them really creamy.

funfunfun54321 · 26/03/2026 20:22

Black garlic or wholegrain mustard... yum

dozer222 · 26/03/2026 20:24

Loads of butter and a dash of chicken bone broth. So good.

Salt, butter and milk. Sometimes cream or cream cheese (philadelpha type) dependent on what its going with. Ooh and grated cheese sometimes.

tiptoptoemaytoe · 26/03/2026 20:29

Butter and cream cheese- delicious.

At about the same time that a packed lunch became a pack lunch and a boxed set became a box set.

Gets right on my threepennies.

All of those are so infuriating. People don't say clot cream or whip cream, so why say mash potatoes.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 26/03/2026 20:34

Mayo.

I'd forgotten about pack lunch.
Another one to add to my list.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/03/2026 20:41

I mash potatoes with carrots or swede.

sanityisamyth · 26/03/2026 20:42

Butter and milk, sometimes grated cheese

My inner pendant is screaming. It's mashed potatoes - mash potatoes is an instruction.
That aside, I put garlic oil and large quantities of vegan "buttter"(can't eat dairy).

I think you meant pedant, pendant is something that hangs off a necklace 😉sorry couldn’t resist that one 😂

PeasePuddingPottage · 26/03/2026 20:53

Microwave salted butter splash of milk. Dash of mustard!

PhilosophyStoned · 26/03/2026 20:58

Oooh, lots of lovely new ideas - cream cheese is good one as well are often left with half a tab after bagels and salmon on the weekend. Also, wondered what to do with yolks left from the meringue, usually mixed into an omelette or rice. Love chives idea too.

Ref. mash vs mashed - I apologise, in my defence English is my second language and clearly I have been hanging out with the wrong crowd, I’ve learnt it like this from the start. In fact, today it was sausage & mash… In my language, we call it potatoe purée. Also, not great with “a”s and “the”s - often it is clear which one applies, but I do not “feel” them…

Egg! Life changer

I don't add anything other than butter to the actual mash but I boil the potatoes in the first place with a couple of vegetable stock cube in the water.

I use the leftover stock/potato water for gravy/soups etc and the mashed potato has that yummy ever so slight umani flavour.

SabbatWheel · 26/03/2026 21:04

Leeks are nice in mash.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 26/03/2026 21:04

Wee bit milk and wee bit of butter if I have it.

Not the point of this thread at all, but when did mashed potatoes become mash potatoes?

I was wondering the same thing.

1apenny2apenny · 26/03/2026 21:05

Warm milk, butter, mustard, salt, sometimes cremefraiche or cream

And macaroni cheese became mac & cheese.

Back on thread…I put butter and a splash of milk in my mash. Occasionally some crumbled Stilton if I’ve got some kicking around in the fridge.

Hope all you nitpickers feel ashamed now that you know English is the OP’s second language.

It really annoys me too. Especially when I see it on menus in restaurants.
