What do you put in your mash potatoes?

I usually put a knob of butter but trying full fat mayo tonight due to accidentally opening two jars, so need using up. Wondering if I am missing other good alternatives?

Sometimes, I make sweet potato mash, the I put a little dark soya sauce and chopped green onions in the mix.

Butter and black pepper, boil
with some salt

ManyATrueWord · 26/03/2026 21:45

Butter, cream and milk in varying proportions.

Roasted garlic is my go to upgrade.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 26/03/2026 21:49

Black pepper and a ton of butter. Maybe a dash of cream if I have it. Absolutely no milk. See also: scrambled eggs.

Always butter and milk in my mashED potatoes.

Bishbashbush · 26/03/2026 22:10

Lots of butter, milk/cream, mustard, salt and pepper. Sometimes I mix a head of cooked broccoli through it as well.

Oooh, lots of lovely new ideas - cream cheese is good one as well are often left with half a tab after bagels and salmon on the weekend. Also, wondered what to do with yolks left from the meringue, usually mixed into an omelette or rice. Love chives idea too.

Ref. mash vs mashed - I apologise, in my defence English is my second language and clearly I have been hanging out with the wrong crowd, I’ve learnt it like this from the start. In fact, today it was sausage & mash… In my language, we call it potatoe purée. Also, not great with “a”s and “the”s - often it is clear which one applies, but I do not “feel” them…

It's correct to say sausages and mash, because mash is used there as a noun.

But when you're talking about potatoes which have been mashed, then you say mashed potatoes, mashed being the past participle of the verb 'to mash' used as an adjective.

In the same way you would say boiled carrots, not boil carrots, and baked potatoes, not bake potatoes.

Not a criticism, just an explanation which I hope helps you with your already excellent language skills. Unfortunately in Britain many people don't use the language correctly.

A lot of butter, double cream, salt&pepper, seedy mustard and cheddar cheese. Spring onions also good.

caringcarer · 26/03/2026 22:13

Lots of butter and a tiny splash of cream if I happen to have any open, which I normally do.

Chetchy · 26/03/2026 22:16

Hot milk and melted butter, salt and pepper, then more butter and buttered fried leeks.
I actually would happily eat a bowl of that for dinner.
Heaven.

Wrong crowd Grin
'Mash' is fine on it's own - it's an abbreviation. But definitely 'mashed' when it's got 'potato' after it. I teach languages - some things are tricky to translate!

Absolutely. Using one's own language badly is not restricted to Brits though!

I mash potatoes with carrots or swede.

Me too, and if I have sweet potatoes around, that mashes up well with ordinary spuds.

A ridiculous amount of butter (I use salted so I don’t tend to need salt separately) and then lots of white pepper. If it’s to top any sort of potato topped pie then I’ll add an egg as I think it helps it brown more when it’s in the oven.

Thank you, you’ve reminded me that my mum used to put an egg in when making the topping got shepherd pie. Nice memory.

morbidcuriosity · 27/03/2026 06:14

Depends what im having it with. Bit sometimes a big dollop of horse raddish or mustard, normally just butter salt and pepper though.

FlatErica · 27/03/2026 06:18

My face. Nom nom nom!

user1492757084 · 27/03/2026 06:22

Usually milk, butter, pepper and salt.

My fave is butter, cabbage, nutmeg and pepper.

theyoungishman · 27/03/2026 06:24

Lots of truffle oil, fresh grated truffle on top 😋

whiteroseredrose · 27/03/2026 06:59

Olive oil and black pepper. Sometimes grainy mustard.

rockstuckhardplace · 27/03/2026 07:38

@whiteroseredroseolive oil here too! Can't believe it's just us.

GreenGodiva · 27/03/2026 07:40

In sweet potato mash smoked paprika and black Perrier with butter is delicious. In normal mash I use double cream or butter with white Pepper. Stones throw in some spring onions and cheese

DeanElderberry · 27/03/2026 08:06

Usually butter and milk, sometimes other stuff, but at the moment the first, fresh out of the ground, chives and lovage. So good.

Growlybear83 · 27/03/2026 08:15

I always add unsalted butter, black pepper, and an egg.
