What do you put in your mash potatoes?

I usually put a knob of butter but trying full fat mayo tonight due to accidentally opening two jars, so need using up. Wondering if I am missing other good alternatives?

Sometimes, I make sweet potato mash, the I put a little dark soya sauce and chopped green onions in the mix.

My inner pendant is screaming. It's mashed potatoes - mash potatoes is an instruction.
That aside, I put garlic oil and large quantities of vegan "buttter"(can't eat dairy).

Oops. Did you mean inner pedant?
You're right about mashed though!

Usually a knob of butter. Late DM, who lived through WWII rationing, used a splash of milk instead.

Chopped chives or spring onions.
Wholegrain mustard.
Grated cheddar.
Horseradish.
Parsley.

It depends what we’re having it with but usually milk, butter, salt and pepper. Sometimes add cheese, spring onions, wholegrain mustard or horseradish.

If I’m using it as a topping for something like a cottage pie, I also add an egg. Makes it puff up slightly and you can’t taste it.

Butter, milk, mustard and an egg yolk. I then finish it off in the oven to make the top all crispy.

A ridiculous amount of butter (I use salted so I don’t tend to need salt separately) and then lots of white pepper. If it’s to top any sort of potato topped pie then I’ll add an egg as I think it helps it brown more when it’s in the oven.

Butter and dried tarragon, yum!

OrsolaRosso · 26/03/2026 20:02

Butter, milk, and some bouillon powder to season.

Adding mayo is all kinds of wrong, but very, very delicious 😋

Pinepeak2434 · 26/03/2026 20:02

warm milk, butter salt and white pepper - sometimes an egg yolk

CheeseNcrackerz · 26/03/2026 20:03

Well that's just typical of autocorrect. I told it not to put pedantic and even edited it to say "pedant". Serves me right, really.

I guess I need to make mash now. Short for mashed potatoes. Agreed on that score

ainsleysanob · 26/03/2026 20:04

Sea salt butter, cream, garlic purée, cheddar cheese and spring onions!

RosesAndHellebores · 26/03/2026 20:09

Butter, creme fraiche, salt pepper.

Will try the egg for cottage and fish pie next time I make them - thank you.

Cream cheese or butter and fried onions

fried onions sounds pretty yummy. I'll have to try that .

paintedpanda · 26/03/2026 20:13

We buy a cheap salted block butter and use absolutely tonnes of it in mash, with a splash of milk to help bind it. Yum 🤤

Not the point of this thread at all, but when did mashed potatoes become mash potatoes?

AxolotlEars · 26/03/2026 20:15

Double cream, butter and cream cheese...if we are being fancy. 🙂

NewZebra · 26/03/2026 20:15

Loads of wholegrain mustard. Yum

AlexandraJJ · 26/03/2026 20:18

creme fraiche or mascarpone and salt. Lush

MrsMitford3 · 26/03/2026 20:20

Butter, dash of milk and sea salt.
Mash in cheese if it's going on top of a shepherd's pie 😋

I use a small hand mixer-I guess because my mum did-and so so smooth and lovely.

CousinBette · 26/03/2026 20:20

Adding my voice to the pp who point out it’s MASHED potatoes! Like a boiled egg. You’ve boiled it. Not ‘boil egg’.

and:

milk
butter
salt
pepper

golddiamond · 26/03/2026 20:21

Butter, lots of…
Milk
Cream and good
creamed horseradish sauce
