What do you put in your mash potatoes?

I usually put a knob of butter but trying full fat mayo tonight due to accidentally opening two jars, so need using up. Wondering if I am missing other good alternatives?

Sometimes, I make sweet potato mash, the I put a little dark soya sauce and chopped green onions in the mix.

Butter, splash of milk and loads of mature cheddar cheese.

Ive added spring onions before, but my teens hate onions

Butter , milk/cream, salt and sometimes an egg yolk .

My dp makes the best mashed potatoes anyone has ever tasted. I don’t want to know what he puts in them- he says it’s his Irish granny’s secret recipe. I suspect it’s an entire packet of Kerrygold….

Just butter, milk and salt/pepper here, not too much butter it's only for texture, don't want it to actually taste buttery. Not keen on added flavours, I tend to put all those in the main dish of the meal instead. I like mashed potato to taste of mashed potato.

Edited to add definitely no cheese, the two don't go together at all.

Heretic opinion here, though I often make my own (with Roosters for preference) I have found ready made mash quite good, it's just potatoes, milk, butter and black pepper. Slightly expensive, but a handy time saver for me when I'm cooking for one.

Yesterday dinner was sausages with mixed ready-made mashed potatoes, ready-made mashed carrots and parsnips, and chopped shallot and fresh chives and lovage, and it was delicious.

If I was cooking those veg myself before mashing them I'd steam them, not boil them.

I mash potatoes with carrots or swede.

I use a potato masher. Gets the job done.

I think you meant pedant, pendant is something that hangs off a necklace 😉sorry couldn’t resist that one 😂

That's what I typed. Autocorrect "kindly" changed it for me. Autocorrect obviously wanted to make a point.

Butter, milk, pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper

I put the same.

Gardenquestion22 · 27/03/2026 08:45

Grainy mustard is nice especially with smoked haddock cooked in butter.
the best mash I’ve ever had was made with yoghurt and a pinch of asofetida.

AgnesMcDoo · 27/03/2026 08:47

Butter and milk

cream at Xmas

AddictedToBooks · 27/03/2026 08:48

Always butter, but sometimes add cheese or mustard and my uncle got me into mash with celery added - sounds awful but it was actually really lovely.

Nincompoo · 27/03/2026 08:50

I buy it. Life is too short for mashing potato’s when the stuff you can buy for a quid tastes just as good.

hopeful4us · 27/03/2026 08:55

Butter, cheese and a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard. I think this is the reason my husband married me

Ilovemychocolate · 27/03/2026 09:05

A bit of marmite and butter.
Delicious!

My inner pendant is screaming. It's mashed potatoes - mash potatoes is an instruction.
That aside, I put garlic oil and large quantities of vegan "buttter"(can't eat dairy).

Pedant! 😄 Muphry's Law!🤪

catin8oot5 · 27/03/2026 09:31

The bloke off Saturday Kitchen says 2/3s mash to 1/3 butter 😱

TeaSqueezingpos · 27/03/2026 09:32

Onion of butter, splash of cream and a spoon of Dijon mustard

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 27/03/2026 09:34

Sorry to be pedantic but it’s “ mashed potatoes” or “ mash” - I am definitely turning into my DM! 🤣

Latebloomer121 · 27/03/2026 09:37

If one more person says egg, I'm going to shoot them

a pinch of asofetida
What??!

It really isn’t!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 27/03/2026 12:27

What is the difference between mashed potatoes and potato purée? To me, mashed potatoes are the watery clumps of tasteless starch that were served with school dinners in the Seventies. Having been brought up in a household which cooked the French way, my own potato purée is made with lots of butter, some gold top milk or cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. I’d never thought of adding mustard of any kind, that sounds like a good call. I often add grated cheese (preferably Gruyère) on top and put it under the grill just before serving.

DeanElderberry · 27/03/2026 16:00

I agree with @Nincompoo that ready-made mash is excellent. Checking the ingredients here: 86% Rooster potatoes (my variety of choice anyway); 5% salted butter; 5% whole milk; 3% double cream; salt; cracked black pepper.

And we're told that potatoes that have been cooked, refrigerated and re-heated have more resistant starch.

DinoLil · 27/03/2026 16:01

Chives and plenty of butter!

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 16:05

Don’t bother with the mayo, it adds nothing but extra calories.

i use a knob of butter and a lot of coarse rock salt and pepper.

the potato ricer is massive agg but it’s worth it
