Hmmmm, not so sure about that.🤔

eta
The countries might choose different levels of 'support'. I guess it depends on the definition of the word support, as we are all being drawn into this mess we didn't create.

The EU countries are not prevaricating and they will never acquiesce.

Llttledrummergirls · 25/03/2026 17:47

Yay. Bullshit barbie bullshitting. It must be going really badly for Trump.

No, I think think they will eventually. What else can they do? They can't let the strait of hormuz remain closed indefinitely.

Why not? We will have to adapt, or pay countries like China who can get through. It would be expensive, but not as expensive as human life- something Trump values as worthless.

logicisall · 25/03/2026 17:55

I was listening to a piece on Nigeria, and they are definitely starting to talk about cutting dependance on foreign oil supplies by investing in non-drilling infrastructure. As I mentioned in a pp, constructing refineries must be a prime aim now and I'm sure China will be waiting in the wings to bind them closer provide loans and labour for those and pipelines etc.

We are actually seeing a restructuring of the world as the ramifications of Trump's presidency feed through the globe.

Terrribletwos · 25/03/2026 18:03

Yes, it's interesting because other countries ships are getting through so it's like it's a token has been given to Russia and China and the west is being sanctioned.

Yes, this is the issue. "Acquiesce" to what? Trump's latest mad self-contradictory outpouring?

This reminds me of the time Trump suggested water-bombing Notre Dame, while French fire-fighters who knew what they were doing quietly and competently put the fire out.

It's the sort of thing Trump's enablers would spin as "aquiescing" to Trump and his wonderful suggestion that they should get that fire put out! But he had nothing useful to add, and they didn't need telling.

Nigeria has a fucktonne of oil. I mean serious amounts.

It has been US (and by extension UK) policy these past 80 years to prevent African nations from working together and asking for a fair price for their wealth.

Worth looking what Qaddafi was up to when he was around. In particular the pan African watercourse (did I say Africa has a fucktonne of water ?)

Lyse Doucet said earlier what this war has proved to the Iranians is the power they hold over the Strait of Hormuz and it's something they'll never let go. Are they going to hold us to ransom for eternity as a result of the arrogant recklessness of the loon in the White House?

PickAChew · 25/03/2026 18:23

Spandauer · 25/03/2026 16:52

Erm...

Trump:
I am so proud of our ICE Patriots! They were unfairly maligned by the Lunatic Democrats for years, and now, at the Airports, in addition to what they are supposed to be doing, they are helping people with bags, even picking up and cleaning areas. They are so proud to be there! The fact is, they shouldn't have to do this, but they are rehabbing a fake image given to them by Radical Left Democrat politicians. The Public is loving ICE, so the Democrats, unwittingly, did us a favor — They are Great American Patriots, they just happen to have much larger, and harder, muscles than most — which is what they're supposed to have.
Thank you to ICE for the GREAT job you are doing. America very much appreciates it! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Look like school prefects with too much power.

"Hold to ransom" ?

Perish the thought.

Suggest a reasonable amount for safe passage ? Of course. That's how you do business. In fact if the Iranian leader went on TV and proposed that, making sure he's holding up a copy of "The Art of the Deal" then MAGAnauts would have a "special moment" realising how right they were all along.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 25/03/2026 18:25

If Lyse Doucet says it, I’m sure it must be so. @DancingFerret.

The absolute worst part of this whole shitshow is that Trump will not be held accountable for his actions, nor suffer from them. Just the rest of us.

And request payment in a non- US currency. The Nigeria piece also mentioned the constrictions of needing to buy USD to pay for oil in USD.

Doucet didn't mention ransom: that was my inference.

Terrribletwos · 25/03/2026 18:41

But eventually the EU powers will give in and do what the us and Israel commands...it's a given. It may be in an concilitiary way but it will be done ..eventually .. absolutely.

logicisall · 25/03/2026 18:44

@SerendipityJane thank you for the information on the Great Man Made River. I had no idea it existed. I've wanted to visit Iran, Iraq and now need to add Libya to my list.

That's what I enjoy about the people who post on this thread - their breadth of knowledge...and I'm prone to go down rabbit holes when I find an interesting topic.😊

Just to clarify, I wasn’t talking about your inference, I was simply talking about what you quoted Lyse Doucet as having said about Iran’s power over the Strait of Hormuz, and their never wanting to let that go. I think she’s right.
