It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker
(Edwin Starr 1970, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong)

Unless, of course, your name ends in Trump, when it ain't nothing but an opportunity to grift, deflect and destroy.

Beware the Ides of March - Trump Thread #156 | Mumsnet

Do you think The Friend of Epstein is ^au fait^ with Roman history? Previous thread: [[https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5488504-name-a-better-trio-...

Thank you @Spandauer & great title😎

Sad about Country Joe. What a time for the singer and writer of one of the best, and catchiest, anti-war songs, to die.
It's cosmic, man.

Yeah.

Tom Lehrer died last July and was spared this particular horror show, but some of his songs are highly relevant just now too.

(Thanks for the new thread, Spandauer)

By the Late great Edwin Starr
The king of Northern soul.

bloodredfeaturewall · 09/03/2026 19:12

I hope the russians love their children too...

...for might makes right
Until they've seen the light
They've got to be protected
All their rights respected
Till somebody we LIKE can be elected...

Tom Lehrer; Send the Marines!

Yes, I was definitely thinking of that one. Also "so long mom, I'm off to drop the bomb" and "we will all go together when we go".

Ha yes...every Hottentot and every Esquimo...😂

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/03/2026 19:39

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas
Do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollars.

I once tried to persuade the CND on an Aldermaston March to sing that one, but they were very shocked about the idea of singing something that glorified war. Goodness knows what they would have made of "so long mom"!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/03/2026 19:43

Thank you for the new thread, @Spandauer - excellent title Grin Hopefully, it will move as fast as the last one and we will rapidly get to the point where the next thread title is: “For You, the War is Over."

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 09/03/2026 19:47

Yes you need a strong stomach for Tom Lehrer. I know vegetarians who are shocked at Poisoning Pigeons, but I do love to sing it. 😂
He did turn out many a fine and rousing song.

PandoraSocks · 09/03/2026 20:18

A lurky thank you from me @Spandauer

MrTiddlesTheCat · 09/03/2026 20:27

Bigly placemarking.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/03/2026 20:32

@Spandauer

Thanks for the new thread and great choice for the title! Bizarro world, but that song and Marvin Gaye's "What's going on' have been my 'earworms' today. Along with snippets of so many of the protest and 'love your brother' songs of the late 60s/early 70s. Probably started me off due to the death of Country Joe.

Where are the protest songs by major stars today? I can only think of Springsteen's "Minneapolis", but I'm thinking of 'war' protest songs.

One of my favs is "Vatican Rag".

"Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
Ave Maria, gee it's good to see ya,
Getting ecstatic and sorta dramatic and,
Doin' the Vatican Rag!!"

AcrossthePond55 · 09/03/2026 20:38

OK gotta ask.

Anyone here besides me ever listen to Dr Demento?

(Bonus points for knowing his theme song)

I know this is way OTT but I'm having a huge dose of musical nostalgia.
