Unless, of course, your name ends in Trump, when it ain't nothing but an opportunity to grift, deflect and destroy.

"This story isn't true. But what it tell us about ...." was a line originally developed as satire that has become an accepted way of reporting.

"The president slowly stood up. His large frame shadowed by the light through the oval office windows. Drilled by the endless repetition his closest aides silently - in turn - fell to their knees as the presidential penis emerged ready for it's daily worship. One by one the aides redeclared their fealty in the only way the president would accept ...."

Now, that story isn't true. But what it tells us about American politics is that it's a decidedly toxic brew of narcissism, subordination, and bad writing.

Given the Epstein files, and the insane praying, this sounds like a perfectly plausible account of life in the White House.

From the Guardian half an hour ago:

Revealed: UK security adviser attended US-Iran talks and judged deal was within reach

Britain’s national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, attended the final talks between the US and Iran and judged that the offer made by Tehran on its nuclear programme was significant enough to prevent a rush to war, the Guardian can reveal.
Powell thought that progress had been made in Geneva and that the deal proposed by Iran was “surprising”, according to sources.
Two days after the talks ended, and after a date had been agreed for a further round of technical talks in Vienna, Donald Trump and Israel launched the attack on Iran.
Powell’s presence at the talks, and his close knowledge of how they were progressing, was confirmed by three sources.

So the orange asswipe could have waited. He didn't want a deal. What a piece of scum.

It was a serious question :-)

I have never heard of him and any site about him on my "intranet" is blocked.

But I got a bit of a bio in the end. Ex soldier, twice failed at elections, wife killed in Syria, conspiracist, and going by his resignation letter alone, probably qualifies as anti-semitic ( in polite company anyway).

The Trump administration's top official on counterterrorism has resigned from his position, citing opposition to the war in Iran, and urged the president to "reverse course".
In a letter posted on his X account, National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent said that Iran posed "no imminent threat" to the US and claimed that the Trump administration "started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby".
Kent, 45, is a US special forces and CIA veteran whose wife, navy cryptologic technician Shannon Kent, was killed in a suicide bombing in Syria in 2019.
The BBC has contacted the White House for comment on Kent's resignation.
In the letter, Kent - a twice failed Republican congressional candidate from Washington state - said that until June 2025 he believed that "Trump had understood that the wars in the Middle East that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation."
Additionally, Kent alleged that "high-ranking Israeli officials" and influential US journalists had sowed "misinformation" that caused Trump to undermine his "America First" platform.
"This echo was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posted an imminent threat to the United States," the letter continued. "This was a lie."
Kent, a long-time supporter of Trump's, was narrowly confirmed to his post in July last year, with many Democrats criticising his links to extremist groups including members of the Proud Boys.
In the confirmation hearing, Kent also refused to back away from claims that federal agents had fomented the January 6 riots at the US Capitol or that Trump had won the 2020 election.
At the National Counterterrorism Center, he reported to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and oversaw the analysis and detection of potential terrorist threats from around the globe.
Previously, Kent had deployed 11 times overseas with the US military, including with the US Army's special forces in Iraq.
He later became a paramilitary officer at the CIA, before leaving government service after his wife's death.
Kent cited his military service and her death in his letter, saying that he "cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives."

Not a naice man.

The war & AIPAC are nightmares, but so is Joe Kent, one of the most openly fascist figures in Trump’s regime, a comrade of Proud Boys and Fuentes, a man who says Black Lives Matter was a child trafficking ring, a guy who complains that Hitler is misunderstood. Don’t take the bait.

With the news of yet another Iranian commander killed, I am a bit confused as to why Isreal and the US put so much importance on these individuals.

It seems to play on the Sci-Fi theme that the whole alien species will collapse into a disorganized rabble if the leaders are "taken out", and that somehow these regimes are incapable of having any sort of chain of command. Is it because Trump and Netanyahu are narcissists who really do believe that "all" depends on them personally ?

I mean to put it really bluntly, it does not take a brain the size of a planet to figure out how to fire a gun at a street full of protestors, who are protesting about you having a gun.

But yet the narrative is that removing the head will cause the tens of millions of members of the Iranian regime to lay down their arms and sing songs with the tens of millions who want democracy, with the few hundred that want Monarchy, and the tens of millions who want a different theocracy.

And yes, I made the numbers up, because nobody knows. I have seen one survey published but that was totally flawed. The survey itself said that.

Has it ever happened before where killing the top folk caused a government to collapse and all was happy ever after ?

May be so but it’s a sign of Trump losing support from the “other” side. Can only be a good thing.

So hardly a snowflake. And not someone who can easily be slated as one. Especially if he comes out swinging.

Remember it was the (literally) die-hard Nazis who were all busy trying to negotiate behind Hitlers back.

Thanks for the cut and paste @SerendipityJane .

I notice no mention of his rank in the army. So not high then I would presume. We are not talking Ike and Paton level. So not a choice between a clever fellow and a lunatic. We are talking about a grunt who is good at eating worms on survival training.

It sort of ties in with my post above about head of the snake and government collapse. Because when a regime is led by a lunatic such as Trump, there are plenty more lunatics appointed by them waiting in the wings.

Claudius was a surprisingly good emperor after Caligula.

And while it took a few returns, Vespasian was quite the antidote to Nero.

In the screenplay, Trump would choke to death on a peanut - dying alone whilst everyone looks on, but no one dare be the one to get any blame. We'd then have an interregnum with JD Vance being totally and utterly unable to make a mark on history before a completely unexpected and incredible person emerges as the next POTUS. And in 60 years time Armando Ianuccis grandchildren could make a file of it.

As I suspected. Never an officer. Not that I am placing massive importance on rank of course. This fellas role model only made it to corporal after all.
