Things I'm sad I'll never do again

Ride a horse - too old and too many dodgy bits to risk a fall and nervous riders more likely to come off.

I'm sure there are loads of others but this is mine today.

Anyone else have one?

My mum is 81 and has a riding lesson every week. She does independent walk trot and canter. Perfectly possible.

I’m sad I’ll never again go out clubbing with a tenner and get drunk on cheap pints and dance til 5am and then go home with somebody exciting and unsuitable.

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 08/03/2026 18:01

Not live alone.

Be desired.

Be hugged as often and as long as I need.

Giggorata · 08/03/2026 18:02

Many of the above, mostly about people and places that are gone, and also:
climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor
live in London
be able to do more than one dance without heart issues
feel OK going up a high ladder
get stoned
take on another dog

  1. Eat delicious gluten filled foods - proper pizza, tasty fresh bread or pastries, burger king, iced gems, wheat crunchies, burtons fish and chips, walkers crisps...the list goes on. (2) Relax around food. I really really miss being able to eat spontaneously and without anxiety. If I ever get in a position where I am able to go abroad gain it will be very different and I'd be worried about going anywhere too exotic in case I can't eat or get ill. I allowed myself to be talked out of going travelling when I was young as my parents didn't think it was safe or sensible and I really regret that now as it wouldn't be the same as a middle aged person with a very restrictive diet, my DC are actively encouraged to have a go, try things etc while they are young, fit and well and with no responsibilities.

I will probably also never feel as amazing as I did in 1995 - amazing summer, freedom between A levels and uni, great group of friends from college after years of bullying at school, in love with my then boyfriend. The world was our oyster and everything just felt so light and free, as well as night out we all spent hours hanging around, walking, talking about random stuff and just being.

Louloubelles · 08/03/2026 18:19

So many things but one that I feel quite keenly is that feeling of my child’s little hand in mine. I was aware at the time that there was a time limit on them being happy to walk along holding my hand. When they’d instinctively reach out. They’re late teens now and I think about that sometimes and miss it.

For them that miss sex lust or a hot time but want no strings attached, adult holidays are for you.

See I would be absolutely up for that, but have no babysitter, and a body like a melted candle.

Oh God. Is it really impossible to have these things after a certain age?
What age?

Reepycreepy · 08/03/2026 20:18

Yes ride a horse is mine. Really miss it but I’m too decrepit now and falling off could finish me off. I have some wonderful memories though.

MDMA, sorry to lower the tone. I'm older, more sensible and have people who depend on me to not die stupidly, so it's totally off the table.

I was going to say this too. It ties in for me with going to gigs and festivals and pulling all-nighters. I know I will never feel the E euphoria again because I am too mature to ever risk it.

Tigerbalmshark · 08/03/2026 20:21

Carry DS in a sling! It was just such a cosy way to carry a baby. He is 9 now and almost as tall as me so definitely no chance, though he still likes a piggy back.

Reepycreepy · 08/03/2026 20:22

Some posters are saying yes to riding but my knees and hips have had it, so it’s not for me.

Didn’t Henry VIII used to get winched into his saddle? Where there’s a will there’s a way 🤣

Pixiedust49 · 08/03/2026 20:26

Dancing all night definitely. I loved it!

Yeah I’m sad I’ll never have cuddles with my babies again. They are big kids now and I love them, and mostly prefer the fact they are so much easier! But I do slightly mourn the loss of their baby selves.

This, I really hope my dc allow me to visit and cuddle my grandchildren. It’s so special and seems like everyone is encouraged to put up boundaries to keep grandparents at arms lengths during those first weeks… until they’re needed for childcare. Hoping my dc don’t follow that kind of advice.

cakewitch · 08/03/2026 20:27

Go for long walks up big hills.

SpottyAlpaca · 08/03/2026 20:33

Take intoxicants other than alcohol. I use to love smoking a joint, but sadly my days of smoking anything are over. I used to love doing a line on a night out, but again my days of taking anything stronger than ibuprofen are over.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 08/03/2026 20:35

Feel baby's downy hair under my chin as they sleep.

Kiss someone for the first time

Look in the mirror and not feel horror

Flirt outrageously with a stranger

villanova · 08/03/2026 20:37

Ice skating or roller skating. I used to spend every Saturday at the ice rink with friends, zooming round to the music, and later I loved roller blading along the promenade. Like the ex-riders, there's too much fear of falling over. I did rollerskate a few years ago at 53, and enjoyed it, but don't think I'll take the risk again.

Fraudornot · 08/03/2026 20:37

Being able to eat lightly for a few days and drop a few pounds

Seems so. 22years for me

Diversion · 08/03/2026 20:43

Feel my baby move inside of me, breastfeed, push my beautiful coach built silvercross pram with a baby inside, one on the pram seat and one holding onto the pram each side. Have my Mum phone me for a natter or pop round for a cup of tea, visit my grandparents and have my grandad tell me to have another jaffa cake. Of course, there are other things too, but these pale into comparison with these beautiful memories
