Someone recommended putting a sheet of kitchen roll in the food caddy to absorb the moisture. I can’t remember the thread or the poster, but every time I change the bag I say a little thank you to that person for making my life just that little bit easier 🙏

what's a food caddy?

PermanentTemporary · 08/03/2026 11:38

I don’t use scissors to cut pizza any more but there was a time before The Pizza Cutter Purchase when that made my life much easier.

Back in my breastfeeding days I would never have known that mixed feeding was a thing without MN.

This makes the kitchen roll tip redundant, but it was liberating to realise I can swish all my plunger coffee grounds with water & tip the lot into the food waste. It all gets tipped into a bigger bin (or compost in garden) & the amount of liquid in there is irrelevant. Saves the drains from coffee grounds.

Mine will be starting a weekly collection by Easter.

We always put some kitchen roll in the bottom of the bin bag for the waste bin too.

onelumporthree · 08/03/2026 11:54

Many moons ago someone on MN said that keeping a vanilla pod in your caster sugar container infuses it with the taste of vanilla, and one pod lasts for years that way. You just top up the sugar as and when, and leave the vanilla pod in there.

You can save static from your skirt riding up by adding a couple of safety pins in the hem.

I saw it on here years ago and I mentioned it on another thread this morning. It worked for me!

Okay, how the other half find insignificant things to fret about. That better

I still use scissors. Best tip I ever got from
here

So for everyone else who’s asking, what’s a food caddy? A food caddy is a wee bin you put food scraps in to make compost.

bigboykitty · 08/03/2026 12:10

OMG @Smallwinscount thank you. I'm starting this today!! Happy International Women's Day 💖

Or the food that is then put out separately for the council to collect. It’s really very normal

Over a decade ago on here, someone said if the job is only going to take 5 minutes or less to do, Just fucking do it!
Every time I’m about to defer doing something until later, it pops up in my head.
Thank you, you’ve saved me from myself many a time 💐

Itstimeforachangeagain · 08/03/2026 13:03

Oh I hadn't heard this tip OP. Many thanks for sharing and I will certainly be giving it a go.

I found out this week my local council has started a campaign to get people to use the food recycling service. I'm glad they are promoting it but find it strange that it needs promoting- it's been in operation for well over a decade and I don't understand anyone not using a helpful facility that is also good for the environment.

I use scissors for portioning a Naan bread, otherwise it would disappear before I got any 🙄

I have a metal beer bottle cap forced into the underside of a bar of soap thanks to a tip from MN. Stops it going gloopy

more than a little condescending, and also a massive assumption on your part that I have nothing more significant going on in my life.

I have made a conscious decision to appreciate the small things and acknowledge where others have contributed to them.

And for cutting the fat off bacon before you bake it in the oven .

i put cut up kitchen roll in opened salad bags to try to keep the contents fresh/dry that extra couple of days.
