Someone recommended putting a sheet of kitchen roll in the food caddy to absorb the moisture. I can’t remember the thread or the poster, but every time I change the bag I say a little thank you to that person for making my life just that little bit easier 🙏

Can I thank you please? I have just hoovered my kitchen floor because of your 5 minutes advice. I had been putting it off for days. That one will stay with me. So simple and brilliant. This could change LIVES 👏🏼

You can peel ginger with a teaspoon too.

And heating up the back of a teaspoon under a hot tap and then applying to an insect bite takes away the itch.

Gotta love a teaspoon.

Damn! I've read that about the hot teaspoon before on MN, but did I remember it when I was eaten by mosquitos last weekend? I did not.

Note to self: write it down somewhere.

SouthernNights59 · 12/03/2026 23:24

I learned from MN 'Don't put it down, put it away'.

That was my late DM's advice. She even wrote it out and put it on my bedroom door when I was a teen. I'm now 66 and still ignoring her advice. 😄

The small bin in the kitchen for food waste

Yes. I line mine with biodegradable/compostable bags, I thought everyone did.

Greysnuggle · 13/03/2026 00:14

Yes, but you can put kitchen towel in the bottom of the bin, under the bin liner.

I’m so happy to hear that the magic is passed on again! Welcome to the JFDI club 😄

DH puts a layer of paper from the shredder into the bottom of binbags.

Rather than putting the handle up in lock position can you pull it all the way down to the front (ours lock both ways and I’ve found that much more secure if it gets knocked over by errant creatures).

Believe they can still open it, even if it was locked.

Keeping the clean duvet cover, sheet and other pillow cases inside one of the patterned top pillow cases when you store bedding.

I’ve read this so many times and it sounds like a great idea but I just can’t imagine my duvet cover, sheet AND other pillow cases fitting inside a pillow case?????

AlbieJiggered · 13/03/2026 20:31

@Trotula , I don't put the sheet in but the rest fits in a pillow case.

many many usernames ago I posted this as my favourite tip over on housekeeping and got a bit of a hard time from other posters, If you have a kingsize it's probably like trying to stuff a quail with a duck but for a single set it works brilliantly. I don't use a techinique, I just fold and pop them in and wrap the excess pillowcase underneath (and then I turn it round so I can't see the opening and I feel like I have my life together for 0.5 seconds)

Gloriousgardener11 · 13/03/2026 21:14

I use king size duvet covers and I’ve mastered the technique of folding it so it and its pillow case can fit inside the second pillow case perfectly.
So much easier to find the entire set in one go.

Kitchen roll in an opened bag of salad leaves is a game charger too.

A friend told me that , piece of kitchen roll then close up the bag with a freezer bag clip, it is one of the best tips I have been given and I always think of my friend when I do it. It's the little things!

This changed my life as well as the bed! So easy to store in the airing cupboard too.

AlbieJiggered · 14/03/2026 11:30

@halftermhalfawake, I find it works fine for double and king size sets.

£42? Gulp!

I think you can also get them in Primark and on Amazon. Nowhere near £42. My son’s partner had some when we were in holiday last year and I’m sure they cost her a couple of quid.

Yes I can see it working well for a single set.
With double/king size I guess it depends on thickness. I have a thick cotton Bedeck cover I’m sure that wouldn’t go anywhere near the pillow case (which is actually quite small!) but will give it a go with the singles.
Agree on the kitchen towel in salad and spinach etc, keeps them fresh for days.

No-one is fretting. They are sharing tips on a talk forum.

What do you use MN for - apart from snide comments?

Pots and kettles…
