Someone recommended putting a sheet of kitchen roll in the food caddy to absorb the moisture. I can’t remember the thread or the poster, but every time I change the bag I say a little thank you to that person for making my life just that little bit easier 🙏

I recently started putting double bags in the caddy. Not with the intention of using both but it’s great on the occasions when the one on top with the food in splits (in which case I do use both but it also means the stays a lot cleaner). So as a rule there is always one on the bottom and you just change the top one.

Who knew food caddies could generate so many posts?!

The outside food bin is lockable (well the kid clicks shut) but somehow the foxes still manage to get the lid open sometimes 😩

HappyNooYear · 11/03/2026 22:35

I’ve got an insect bite zapper. It’s bright orange and you click it and it sort of zaps you with a teeny tiny bolt of lighting. Might be the same theory as the hot teaspoon. It works and you can click it as much as you need. Unlike bite cream that always wears off.

Oh I hadn't heard this tip OP. Many thanks for sharing and I will certainly be giving it a go.

I found out this week my local council has started a campaign to get people to use the food recycling service. I'm glad they are promoting it but find it strange that it needs promoting- it's been in operation for well over a decade and I don't understand anyone not using a helpful facility that is also good for the environment.

It's only just being rolled out here. They will be putting an outside large bin for my. neighbours & I to share with individual indoor caddies. I really don't have the space in my tiny kitchen for yet another recycling caddy/bin/whatever. So I'll just use (as environmentally friendly as possible) bags & take them out immediately.

but frankly the (stupid) neighbours put all kinds of crap in the recycling bins making the whole lot not able to be recycled. So I have no confidence they'll follow the food caddy 'rules' 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

I recently discovered that our council actually don’t want us to use biodegradable bags (having dutifully been buying them). From the website:
Once your initial supply of food waste caddy liners is used up, you can buy liners from shops or online, use small plastic bags (including bread and salad bags), or newspaper.
All liners are mechanically removed at the anaerobic digestion facility before food waste is recycled. We recommend using plastic liners, rather than the compostable ones. This is because food waste tends to separate from the plastic ones more easily, whereas it sticks to the compostable ones - meaning less food is actually recycled.

Oh that's very interesting. I wondered why they suggested using bin bags & other plastic bags. Thank you. Obviously I'll have to see what my council says when they deliver the caddy, but at least I'll know why if they suggest using plastic!

FourForksSake · 11/03/2026 22:59

I also run my caddy through the dishwasher occasionally (on its own) to give it a thorough clean.

Don’t leave it in a warm or sunny place. In our last house the only place for it was on the window sill and it was humming after a couple of days. Here it’s in the shady cool utility, much better.

Unfortunately life has changed a lot & I no longer have a utility room 🙇🏻‍♀️. Miss it more than the Ex that's for sure! I don't have a DW either (by choice).

the only non sunny place in my kitchen would be the floor in front of the sink & id keep kicking the bloody thing 🤣

Keeping the clean duvet cover, sheet and other pillow cases inside one of the patterned top pillow cases when you store bedding.

I saw this recently, got dh to help me tidy up the airing cupboard last week and we did this. I pretended I had just thought of doing it on the spot., he was super impressed st my ingenuity!! It’s a great tip though .. no longer a jumble of random sheets/pillowcases

Rather than putting the handle up in lock position can you pull it all the way down to the front (ours lock both ways and I’ve found that much more secure if it gets knocked over by errant creatures).

Okay, how the other half find insignificant things to fret about. That better

No. Nobody’s fretting. 🙂

Jimmy5bellies · 12/03/2026 06:52

Wouldn't the kitchen roll render the food waste spoiled though? Unless it's a very cheap type they don't fully degrade, do they?

So for everyone else who’s asking, what’s a food caddy? A food caddy is a wee bin you put food scraps in to make compost.

Thanks, but now I don't understand why you wee in the bin 🤔

It's fine.

You also have to add the word slang...

I also add a few drops of essential oil to the kitchen towel at the bottom of the food caddy. That way I get a lovely waft of lavender or whatever I’ve used rather than smelly food waste. I’ve started to do this with our other household bins too-a drop of oil on a piece of kitchen towel under the bin bag.
Adds a subtle fragrance of something whenever someone opens a bin

It composts more quickly. Smile

If you get any deliveries wrapped in that wool packaging use the wool to line your cat litter box - its very deoderising. A piece at the bottom of the food waste caddy would probably work too. its compostable.

Its THE BEST THING I ever learnt from the internet. You have to get the temperature right and not burn yourself or have it too cold and do it until the itch goes.

Honestly true. I can't remember now where I discovered it, but it was only a couple of years or so ago. The big downside being that you don't tend to carry around a kettle of hot water, a teaspoon or a hairdryer with you - especially when out and about on holiday!

I've tried the zapper things, but they don't work for me.

I used the hot spoon trick when I got bites on my face in Malta, it actually saved my holiday I was so miserable with how they looked and the dreadful itching. The double bag in the compost caddy is a great idea, I am stealing that one.

I never saw that tip, but have done it for quite a while anyway - usually a double sheet. A lot of moisture manages to seep through the liner.

I have a metal beer bottle cap forced into the underside of a bar of soap thanks to a tip from MN. Stops it going gloopy

But does it not rust and stain the surface?
