Someone recommended putting a sheet of kitchen roll in the food caddy to absorb the moisture. I can’t remember the thread or the poster, but every time I change the bag I say a little thank you to that person for making my life just that little bit easier 🙏

If you've only got 10 minutes you can get a lot done.
If you've got all day, you'll probably won't.

😂😂 the “other half” who’s council does weekly food waste recycling?

Is this not the norm then? Our food caddy gets collected every Thursday.

FourForksSake · 11/03/2026 08:54

I recently discovered that our council actually don’t want us to use biodegradable bags (having dutifully been buying them). From the website:
Once your initial supply of food waste caddy liners is used up, you can buy liners from shops or online, use small plastic bags (including bread and salad bags), or newspaper.
All liners are mechanically removed at the anaerobic digestion facility before food waste is recycled. We recommend using plastic liners, rather than the compostable ones. This is because food waste tends to separate from the plastic ones more easily, whereas it sticks to the compostable ones - meaning less food is actually recycled.

You can peel ginger with a teaspoon too.

And heating up the back of a teaspoon under a hot tap and then applying to an insect bite takes away the itch.

Gotta love a teaspoon.

Aaand if you want to measure out gloopy liquid (honey etc)run the measuring spoon under hot water first and it stops the liquid from sticking to the spoon

I always put down some newspaper or a bit of a paper bag.

Many moons ago someone on MN said that keeping a vanilla pod in your caster sugar container infuses it with the taste of vanilla, and one pod lasts for years that way. You just top up the sugar as and when, and leave the vanilla pod in there.

I still do this courtesy of MN :)

where I live the food waste from the caddy goes out into the garden waste bin and is collected together with that

Cut the onion in half, for easier peeling.
Fold fitted sheets the Martha Stewart way.
Never google dragon butter (one for the oldies here).

I'm going to have to google dragon butter now...unless someone can explain it in non-revolting language as I'm guessing it is something revolting.

Is that Really true about the insect bites?

Okay, how the other half find insignificant things to fret about. That better

And yet you replied to the insignificant thing to fret about.

I can’t think of a way to explain it without putting you off your lunch!
I had forgotten what it was so did a Google, but all my results were for Welsh butter. But if you google ‘dragon butter urban dictionary’ you will get the answer. If you do decide to do this you will definitely NOT thank me for this information! 🤮

SameNonsenseDifferentDay · 11/03/2026 10:45

@MagpiePi don't do it...

@JacknDiane Yes it is! The heat denatures the proteins in the insect saliva that creates the itch reaction.

A blast from a hot hairdryer works really well too! The relief gained doesn't last for too long, but if you're like me and react awfully to mozzie bites, it's a welcome, albeit brief, respite.

I bought a gadget recommended on here which does the same thing only better - zaps your bites with targeted burst of high heat.

Last year on holiday I didn't need to use any anti histamine cream - after one or maybe two zaps at most, every bite stopped itching and then just quietly faded away. Total revelation.

Fleurdalys · 11/03/2026 12:51

Wrap celery or lettuce in tinfoil
Lasts weeks

RosesAndHellebores · 11/03/2026 12:56

Kitchen roll in the bottom of the salad/veg drawer in the fridge too. All those little bits of onion skin, herb end, the green widget on toms that comes off and random escaped cherry tomatoes and mushrooms can then be captured effortlessly whilst giving the bottom of the drawer a wipe round with the folded up kitchen paper.

Papyrophile · 11/03/2026 15:23

I think it might have been me that contributed the vanilla sugar trick, because my family were the only people I knew to do it, but my late DM started it. And she probably learned on her City & Guilds Catering course.

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 15:35

@Papyrophile ,I've known about the vanilla pod in the sugar for decades.
I can't stand vanilla though.

No-one is fretting. They are sharing tips on a talk forum.

What do you use MN for - apart from snide comments?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/03/2026 16:42

Maybe everyone does this.. but I hadn't thought of it until told recently. Dip the ice cream scoop into boiling water or hot water for a minute and you can scoop direct from the freezer. I also heat baked beans by standing an unopened tin in a jug of boiling water and give it a quick stir before serving. Saves a dirty saucepan or microwave bowl.

pikkumyy77 · 11/03/2026 16:44

After a recent maggot incident in the compost bin I keep kitchen scraps in a bag in the freezer until rubbish collection. Just dedicated one of the small drawers.

Iffytimes · 11/03/2026 16:44

Dearg · 08/03/2026 13:08

I use scissors for portioning a Naan bread, otherwise it would disappear before I got any 🙄

I use scissors to chop up sausages.
