Someone recommended putting a sheet of kitchen roll in the food caddy to absorb the moisture. I can’t remember the thread or the poster, but every time I change the bag I say a little thank you to that person for making my life just that little bit easier 🙏

Over a decade ago on here, someone said if the job is only going to take 5 minutes or less to do, Just fucking do it!
Every time I’m about to defer doing something until later, it pops up in my head.
Thank you, you’ve saved me from myself many a time 💐

I learned from MN 'Don't put it down, put it away'.

Still a work in progress.

I also learned from MN 'Not my circus, not my monkeys'. Literally life changing as I have a very toxic birth family situation.

Plus, as a non-UK person I learned from MN what the whole point of premium bonds and ISAs are. Also gamechanging.

Maybe everyone does this.. but I hadn't thought of it until told recently. Dip the ice cream scoop into boiling water or hot water for a minute and you can scoop direct from the freezer. I also heat baked beans by standing an unopened tin in a jug of boiling water and give it a quick stir before serving. Saves a dirty saucepan or microwave bowl.

I'd be opening the tin a little bit, you wouldn't want it exploding. Just a thought.

more than a little condescending, and also a massive assumption on your part that I have nothing more significant going on in my life.

I have made a conscious decision to appreciate the small things and acknowledge where others have contributed to them.

Ignore them. I love these threads. Always pick up little tips to make life just that bit easier ❤️

What are you all doing to get so much leakage in your bins? I have a food caddy and kitchen bin and I don't remember the last time it was wet inside.

weegiemum · 11/03/2026 17:06

A very VERY long time ago, when dd1 was 4 (she’s now 26!) we did a long haul flight to western Canada to visit family (had ds as well who was 2) I asked any good tips for amusing them on a flight. Someone suggested taking water-soluble pens and drawing on their legs and arms, and it comes off with a baby wipe!

sheer genius!

A food caddy sweats.

I put mine out today and it was dry inside, just like every week.
Maybe I don't add as much hot food as other people or something?

Instead of rubbing a dock leaf on a nettle sting, take an unfurled leaf from the middle of the plant (they won't be there all year, best to avoid nettle stings in non sheath months, don't say I didn't warn you), peel back the sheath and use the gel from that sheath on the sting.

Papyrophile · 11/03/2026 17:28

@AlbieJiggered I guess it goes back to the days when vanilla essences were less normal, and before there were synthetic flavourings. Vanilla is expensive.

Gloriousgardener11 · 11/03/2026 17:35

Many years ago someone on MN taught me the term ‘no good deed ever goes unpunished!’ and it’s often popped into my head when I’m about to offer help or volunteer for something.
It’s saved me from potentially many punishments so thanks to that person from the bottom of my heart!❤️

AlbieJiggered · 11/03/2026 17:37

@Papyrophile , vanilla pods are expensive, vanilla essence is cheap. Wonder why? Smile

My built in bin is next to the dishwasher so it gets warm - if I ever find out which genius came up with that idea I'll explain to him what a dumb idea that was (had to have been a bloke).

Tired getting over a bug today and really couldn’t face sorting out our room including the The Chair of Doom. Challenged myself to either fold and put away, hang up or stick 17 items in the wash basket as quick as I could. Then did another 17. Then felt pleased with myself and moved on to the cluttered spare room. Sure I read this counting tip on here, don’t know why 17 but it works for me. Scissors for pizza and bedding sets in a pillowcase are automatic habits now. I love mumsnet.
Anyone remember the post about how to deal with the fallout from a wax crayon in the tumble dryer? I used the same hot cloth technique to rid my dryer of Babybel wax left in a pocket.

I now empty my compost caddy every 3 days to prevent the smelly caddy and more often in hot weather.

I also avoid some of the issues listed here by buying as much veg as possible chopped and frozen. So onions, leeks, spinach, mushrooms, butternut squash, carrots, garlic etc. Saves all the chopping and you can use as much as you want without worrying about the rest forming a damp mouldy patch at the bottom of the fridge.

Do not google it, I believe this came from a thread asking people where their user name came from back in the day when we recognised each other. We then all googled our user names and this is the one everyone remembers.

FourForksSake · 11/03/2026 18:41

May be the hot teabags making the caddy sweat? Against my better judgement we now have a ramekin by the kettle to leave the used bag in to cool. Then into the caddy next time a cuppa is made.

FourForksSake · 11/03/2026 18:42

PS I have never been brave enough to Google dragon butter.

My caddy will sweat if not emptied regularly, especially if I throw out of date food in there or left over gravy etc

I don't add hot food. I have mine in the kitchen with a liner and a kitchen towel sheet at the bottom.

Chill out 😎

Is that Really true about the insect bites?

Its THE BEST THING I ever learnt from the internet. You have to get the temperature right and not burn yourself or have it too cold and do it until the itch goes.

Vanilla essence is synthetic. Extract is more expensive but is very easily made (as long as you have patience!) Couple of vanilla pods slit open into a small bottle with vodka in it. Leave for a year then use for baking etc. You can transfer the vanilla pods into another lot of vodka for the next year, or just top up with vodka as you go!

Mmmm. I’d just cut out the unnecessary sugary bit (don’t really use sugar) and drink the vanilla infused vodka.
