What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:24

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Small fast car.
Quality chocolate.
Aldi/Tesco best quality wine (IME as good as mid-range expensive stuff, but not quite as good as really expensive).
Occasional long-haul holidays.
No mortgage.
Quality boots (Ariat, DMs etc)
Ability to gift my kids money if needed.

I grew up poor and have a knack for saving. Because of my job I have friends who move in fairly wealthy circles and they find it cute that I generally shop in charity shops, use the library, love an evening at the pub (rather than going to arena events), prefer Air BnB to starred hotels etc.

Me and my Ralph Lauren jumper that cost £8 from charidee are over here drinking Aldi vintage champagne and smiling!

I sent a quick reply last night however realised I missed some out. Here is an updated list including the 2 I posted

1/ Monjaro (and working)

2/ Hair (Colour topup every 6 weeks. Cut and colour every 12 weeks)

3/ Skin products including Dermatica (Tretnoin/Retinol) once a month script

4/ Low cost (I know how to find the bargains, and do flight only as well, as I have family abroad) Average 3 trips abroad per year, plus minumum 1 in the U.K.

5/ Quality perfume

6/ Certain makeup brands, and will only wear Dermalogica skin perfect primer

7/ Only use Joico shampoo and conditioner, my hairdresser uses

8/ Clothing only from Joe Browns, Disturbia, Killstar, Minga, and the like

Think that's it

Holidays.

Supporting womens rights.

A Vispring bed. 400 thread count does me fine for the bedding, I dont see that as extravagant.

Tinned fish is so trendy and expensive these days!! 😂

Trendy?!?!

DilemmaDelilah · 07/03/2026 11:46

@savvy7 it's a private pool that can be rented by the hour. VERY expensive, but I dont swim in public... not least because I've had a mastectomy and I don't like wearing a prosthetic to swim.

dubbie · 07/03/2026 08:46

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale how can self raising flour be an extravagance?

Self-raising flour isn't available in Danish shops, so you have to order from various British expat shops. And that costs more in delivery. I'm not sure about the actual price of the flour.

You only visit your mother 3 times a year ?? It's only a London to Bristol distance. That's so depressing.

I buy loose gemstones just to look at them! Grin I get them out at look at them sparkle like a little goblin! My current favourite is a colour change sapphire.

If you're anywhere near the NW, you need to go and see Crytal Carol! Her shop is just amazing.

You are assuming that the mother wants her to visit more? Mine is 5 minutes away and I never "visit" as she doesn't want me in the house as I make her dog jump up.

Yep! Overpriced ‘tin and toast’ to be found in hipster cafes all over, I kid you not.

Charlize43 · 07/03/2026 12:52

Sometimes I can't help myself from buying some ridiculously expensive Artist Monograph book for £60, although I normally by choice try to buy them second-hand for a fraction of the price from Ebay, Abebooks, Second-hand book shops, etc.

£60 for a book on a dead artist / photographer strikes me as ridiculous!

The Assouline books which can retail at several hundreds of pounds are clearly targeted at rich people with more money than sense. Lol. £300 for a book - I'd rather buy a holiday - weekend break.

just adding this company to your husband's tinned fish obsession @LittlePrecious

Sea Sisters

I just had their oak-smoked rainbow trout at breakfast -- it was delicious!

Also, full of mercury. Guilt free poisoning!

It’s not obvious but that’s a quote from the OP. We don’t spend £70 on tinned fish.

You do know that not everyone has a good relationship with their mothers, yes?

I fell in love with the Santa Maria Novella pot pouri a few years ago, it's scent is so unique and lasts for months. I buy it three times a year and have it shipped over from Florence.

Can you post a link? I like pot pouri but everyone I have doesn’t last long.

Jaxhog · 07/03/2026 13:33

I went on a small expedition ship to Antarctica to see Penguins, and I'm going again! I love Penguins.

Jaxhog · 07/03/2026 13:40

I should have added that I bought myself a 6ft tall hand-painted Penguin from the Worchester Waddle. He sits next to our cat tree in the living room. Makes me smile every day.

And I have an expensive crisp habit - San Nicasio Smoked Paprika. Absolutely to die for!

Zitouna · 07/03/2026 14:06

I bought myself a long tail cargo e-bike last year. They are pricey and it was definitely the most indulgent thing I’ve bought in years - and not essential as we have a car and good public transport (in London).

BUT it has totally transformed my life - I cycle everywhere, take the kids everywhere on it, do the shopping etc. have barely driven the car all year, and have cycled over 2000 miles. Bloody love it, worth every penny.

Shock horror, not everyone has lovely mums that they want to spend time with....now back to the tread about extravagant purchases....

SnippySnappy · 07/03/2026 14:17

Mounjaro. Went from a size 18 to a size 10, feel amazing, and there's no way in hell I'm going back. I've accepted I'll be on a maintenance dose for life.
Weekly cleaner. Can't think of anything worse than deep cleaning the bathroom and kitchen after work.
The £6/day parking on site at work (2-3x a week), rather than £0 and walk 25 mins. Not doing that on top of a 45 min commute each way.

In contrast, the things I don't spend much money on are:
Car - it's nothing fancy
Hair - I have it done at the training college
Perfume - happy with Aldi dupes
Brand name food
Clothes - I almost exclusively buy 2nd hand

Tangerinesattack · 07/03/2026 14:24

@Daftypants In July so super hot and humid but there's no other time we can go. Where did you go?
