What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:24

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

David Lloyd gym. I’m in London so it’s silly money. I also added DC to my membership so they can do Padel, Tennis and Swimming lessons. I chill in the spa while they do their classes. My branch also has a work hub which I use 1-2 times a week so I can work from the gym and pop into a Pilates class or whatever between work calls. It’s all unnecessary as I could go our local council run gym but it’s grotty and attracts undesirables. Being a bit of a snob comes at a literal cost.

I will only stay in 5* *star hotels when we go abroad on holiday. At a stretch 4 star

Theatre every couple of months.

I generally think life is short and you should spend on what you enjoy (as long as it’s within your means)

If we had a David Lloyd gym anywhere near us you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be doing the same too. Nearest one is 15 miles away. I've even emailed them to ask them to build one near me 😂

I went on a small expedition ship to Antarctica to see Penguins, and I'm going again! I love Penguins.

Incredible, can you please share details? This is my DH’s dream trip.

I very rarely buy myself anything. I really fancied an Apple Watch. I have worn it twice.

Self-raising flour isn't available in Danish shops, so you have to order from various British expat shops. And that costs more in delivery. I'm not sure about the actual price of the flour.

You can convert plain to sr by adding 1 tsp(5g) of baking powder per 100g of plain (or so the internet tells me...)

iloveeverykindofcat · 07/03/2026 15:51

By the way, she's not restricted to kangaroo meat anymore. That was before I knew what she was reacting to and just eliminated everything except a totally novel protein. She's currently eating Catz Finefood Lamb and Rabbit meat with some grain free turkey kibble for extra calories. Still expensive but not kangaroo level.

For context my other cat is 15 and healthy as a horse on Felix.

The Internet tells me that too. My experience tells me otherwise.

My mattress

ShiftySquirrel · 07/03/2026 16:07

Money is a bit tight so there's not much extravagance going on, but we finally splurged £550 on a new mattress to replace one we've had for 17 years.
It's heaven to go to bed now and has helped both of our neck and shoulder issues.

You could see her more often if you didn't waste your money on an uber which probably costs well over £200 and first class train ticket, much cheaper to pay someone to give you a lift or go by coach

She doesn't want to see her any more often, don't be so judgemental you have no idea

Yes you can, and there’s no good reason why it wouldn’t work, but real SR is just …different. It works better, more consistently. I save up and send whopping orders (also Marmite, Yorkshire Tea, Branston pickle, fig rolls, Polos) to a Brit food shop in my country every few months.

Thecows · 07/03/2026 16:49

HumbleStumble · 07/03/2026 12:12

You only visit your mother 3 times a year ?? It's only a London to Bristol distance. That's so depressing.

Stop being so judgemental about other people's relationships, you really have no idea ..

LlynTegid · 07/03/2026 16:51

Hotels, I don't choose guest houses or cheap hotels.

I think the raising agent has to be evenly distributed within the flour and also very fresh.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 07/03/2026 17:07

Im coeliac so I have to watch for cross contamination so I have a separate butter dish. I get the fancy salted sometimes. Just for me.

Poobs2022 · 07/03/2026 17:30

Botox, Invisalign, handbags, my fancy watch and some expensive artwork. Don't regret any of it.

Ponderingwindow · 07/03/2026 17:31

We spend an obscene amount of money on restaurants, specifically delivery from restaurants It allows us to manage the multiple members of the family who have arfid and simultaneously deal with my disabilities. I consider it money well spent.

Can you post a link? I like pot pouri but everyone I have doesn’t last long.

I don't know how to link, but just Google 'Santa Maria Novello' in Florence and you'll find it.

Ifitsamouse · 07/03/2026 17:48

Loose leaf tea- some of it is quite costly
coffee beans - likewise
meat from a butcher
oh and as I have Norwegian heritage we do have a couple of pure Eiderdown duvets…

AnneElliott · 07/03/2026 17:55

David Lloyd membership - it’s expensive but the other local pools are just so dirty in comparison.
weekly cleaner - worth her weight in gold.
m&s food - not sure how much I spend there but it’s a lot!

Beachtastic · 07/03/2026 18:17

Extravagance is to some extent a matter of perception. For example, my gran couldn't believe she had fluffy coloured towels - this was an unheard-of luxury in her youth. Now that I'm in my 60s, I feel the same way about the things I can afford. One good thing about consumerism is that we are constantly offered fabulous luxuries that would not previously have been available to ordinary folk.

For example, I have just had the most amazing spa experience using a body scrub in the shower. It was scented with cherry blossom and white chocolate. Then I coated myself in a rich, delicious-smelling lotion that will gently "tan" my skin. And used a delightful vitamin C serum on my face, from a lovely little bottle with a dropper. Each of these potions cost less than a fiver and bring me enormous delight.

A recent discovery was LIDL's No. 2 Deluxe Bond Repair hair conditioner, which I tried out of curiosity although I'm such a cheapskate that I was unsure whether to fork out £3.25 for it. And when I dried my hair, it was a real "Wow!" moment. I looked it up online and found that it's a dupe for olaplex, which I've never even considered.

Companies are falling over themselves to create fancy-packaged luxurious items at low cost. With the vitamin C serum (Aldi), for example, I used AI to compare the ingredients with expensive brands and there's really not much difference in terms of what they do. Let's face it, these products are 99% the thrill of using something that feels special. It doesn't have to be expensive to achieve that. I have a 4-bottle collection of Milton Lloyd fragrances (£16 on Amazon) that give me just as much pleasure as some of the swanky expensive perfumes I've collected over the years.

I'm really getting like my gran now. When I clean the house with a spray that makes the kitchen smell of rhubarb, or get the laundry out of the washing machine and breathe in the deliciousness of it all, I can't quite believe that this is my life. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
