What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

We're quite frugal in daily life and live in a fairly cheap (but gorgeous) area, proportionate to our income. So we do have reasonable disposable income. But I grew up very poor and really have to force myself to buy treats. I've got a magazine subscription which brings me a lot of pleasure (Simple Things) and DH got me a perfume sample subscription for Christmas which is a daily joy. However, this all goes out the window when it comes to travel. I used to pour over travel brochures and guide books when I was a child, travelling in my imagination- now I get to actually go! Our next big trip is Japan - so excited!

The mad thing is, I also got some fabulous expensive bright orange underwear, and a Vivienne Westwood orb handbag, and some saucy little boots (Hush Puppies!!!!!!!! - who knewwwww...), so I've got the full kit. Maybe there will be an opportunity to flaunt it all one day. A good Girl Guide is always prepared!

I have never, ever, in my whole life spent this much money on an outfit. I'm sitting here in ancient Primark track pants and a cheap T-shirt from Amazon Basics 🤡

Book tickets to the ballet and where it then, ballet people dress UP!

£150 a week?

a week?

how big is it?

It’s pretty big and was a complete jungle, so I gradually cut it back and redesigned it myself - but I work full time and it just got on top of me, so the last six months I’ve had gardeners. Fantastic! Holly, Ivy, bindweed, nettles, thistles all gone, trellising, water butts and proper compost bins installed. It’s looking amazing as we go in to spring. No guilt or regrets at all.

Other deeply gratifying, life-enhancing extravagances:hand and bath soaps from Kew; Milk&More organic deliveries; Gousto three times a week (otherwise I’d eat spaghetti pesto every night); Who Gives a Crap subscription of the bamboo bog roll (I hate shopping, and I particularly hate having bog roll in my trolley, god knows why).

I've had a weekly cleaner for 26 years but that’s not an extravagance: she’s allowed me to do my work, and cared for me unquestioningly and devotedly, for all that time. My guardian angel.

I see your crumpets and I raise you

  • self raising flour
  • Katy cider
  • Jacobs cereal crackers
  • red onion chutney

Oh and I ordered some Emma Bridgewater stuff recently. Nice mugs and a BIG TRAY.

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale how can self raising flour be an extravagance?

Tisfortired · 07/03/2026 08:47

Books - probably spend about £50 a month on new books, for me and the kids.

Vinted - serious addiction to buying kids clothes on Vinted. Although it’s less of an extravagance I suppose because I constantly sell on there and buy more stuff with the money in the Vinted pot rather than using ‘my own’ money. Most days I have a parcel to collect…

Baking - I love baking, and use good, organic flour and butter and the cost of chocolate etc really adds up.

My extravagances don’t sound that extravagant compared to some responses here but it is all relative :)

notquiteruralbliss · 07/03/2026 08:52

Spending half my income on horses - I give my retired horses with the same standard of care as my ridden ones and do not PTS unless it is for welfare grounds

I have a £2.5 k pair of binoculars. I’m not usually known for splashing the cash, but these were worth every penny (yes, really!).

I’m a little sad to report that it appears that buying these things also bought me a disproportionate amount of respect amongst “typical bird watchers” (think older men), who’ve gone from completely ignoring me to actively making space for me in bird hides. It’s hilarious 😆

I have to know more @ShadowViolet !!! I thought I was being indulgent upgrading to a porro pair a few years back, I didn’t even know binoculars could get that pricey! What’s the tech/makes them worth it?

Fiddy1964 · 07/03/2026 09:25

Travelling, but it is always on a low to medium budget. I used to purchase perfumes and bags but as I've got older I prefer experiences over collecting more items. Only exception to this is my fridge magnets that I collect from every place I travel to.

MoonlessCorridor · 07/03/2026 09:28

Hair and skincare stuff - eg Dyson Coanda 2, Agustinus Bader cream etc

My car- I always buy a convertible because there is no better feeling than driving fast with the wind in your hair, its sublime

Spareahorse · 07/03/2026 09:40

Horses. In particular my beautiful black Arabian gelding. ❤

Deboragh · 07/03/2026 09:43

A bar of soap. About £14!! At first I thought it was terrible of me but I loved the smell of this one and the price of the shower stuff and perfume was well out of my comfort zone. But, it lasted for months, literally, I was gobsmacked when I realised how long it was lasting and retaining it's perfume. He got me the perfume, shower gel and body cream since and I still love it. Santa Maria novella, pot pourri.

Yes - Ragdale Hall nr Melton Mowbray. I’ve mentioned on here before and had a few sarky comments about spending that amount. We go every year , sometimes twice. To me it’s worth every single penny , and beats every other spa I’ve been to hands down x

I go to Ragdale on the 2nd of January every year too, with friends - the perfect new year re-set, a bit of healthy luxury.

What perfumes to you have?

I have a couple of hundred I think. I love the classic Guerlains the most.

OneNewLeader · 07/03/2026 09:59

Artisan bread and french butter.

I fell in love with the Santa Maria Novella pot pouri a few years ago, it's scent is so unique and lasts for months. I buy it three times a year and have it shipped over from Florence.

Interesting. Does perfume not go "off".
My grannie wore L'Heure Bleu and I've fond memories of it but it smells like Harpic on me.

anon666 · 07/03/2026 10:14

I'm not sure its guilt free, but I am extravagant when it comes to the garden.

I've got many, many dahlias arriving at the moment, not to mention hundreds of seed packets. 🫣 Plus a polytunnel.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/03/2026 10:17

Thinking more about this thread, I now realose why I have so little to contribute. I don't really regard my spends as extravagant, privileged perhaps, but I don't feel guilty about spending my money on things I like and want.

It can, but I have L'Heure Bleue that's 40 years old and it's fine. I have some that's 70 years old and it's quite weak.

Daftypants · 07/03/2026 10:23

Coffee 😆 and skincare where the moisturiser is £50 full price (but then again I have really annoying skin so if something works and doesn’t irritate I stick to it and stock up when they’re discounted )

I bought a beautiful soap from there , the packaging is absolutely gorgeous.
I haven’t opened it yet !
I also got a set that had the hand soap and lotion ( Angeli di Firenze I think it was )

Ooh when do you go ?? I have been there and loved it

dubbie · 07/03/2026 10:34

What's all the love for Lurpak? You get much much nicer butter - and I wouldn't be buying anything from Arla and their bovaer cow food additive.
