What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

I have read the whole thread. Love the dress @Beachtastic🙂

I hadn’t realised that any extravagance I have comes with guilt! Ridiculous.

We are about to have some more disposable income so I have some ideas from the thread about how it might be used.

Top of the list is gym membership at a better place. Also maybe a PT/coach.

Loving the concept that a butter dish has suddenly become an extravagance. Ours must be 40+ years old, Denby Memories. I had everything but it's just the butterdish now. Used it until about 2007/8.

People are losing the plot here and obviously don't know what the word "extravagance" means. It's not:

Lurpak butter
paying off your mortgage

It does not mean "hold luggage" when you are flying business class

An extravagance for you may be different to that for someone else.

I’ve been thinking ‘hang on, where do you keep your butter if not in a butter dish?!’ 😂

I keep mine in the deep freeze. I hardly ever use butter so when I do buy a block I cut it up into small blocks and freeze it. Probably only use 2 blocks a year. Can't even think what I use it for now...mashed potatoes, making a sauce for lasagne. Can't think what else.

I'm always surprised at how much butter mumsnetters use. So much saturated fat in it.

Well I don’t think we use an abnormal amount of butter but it’s used for baking (used 2 blocks last night as one of my daughters baked for a school baking competition), on toast, in sandwiches, in cooking (sauces etc). Probably a block a week for a family of 5 on average.

ThiagoJones · 13/03/2026 10:15

Anyway I guess I was referring more to those who obviously do use butter fairly regularly if they’re considering buying a butter dish, not those who only use it every 9th Sunday. It was just a lighthearted observation, not worth an argument (or an analysis of people’s butter eating habits!) about 😁

Fletchasketch · 13/03/2026 10:25

I LOVE my butter dish. We had been using Lurpak for years and now have a portuguese butter dish with a cow on it that I found on Vinted and keep good quality salted butter out of the fridge. Use it for everything- toast, scrambled eggs, sauces. So much better for you than a highly processed spread and the taste is miles better.

The Fi and Jane podcast got me butter dish life- apparently there's a big revival at the moment and us butter dish lovers are not alone. Viva la butter dish!

Ours is from a ceramics shop in Valencia. It’s got a crack in it and I’m considering arranging a holiday in the region so I can get another one the same 😁

Papyrophile · 13/03/2026 12:28

Fresh flowers! But I buy them direct from the grower locally so keeping the money in our little valley.

Enjoying the butter dishes: we have two, both white. One bought in a market in France; the other is the Sophie Conran/Portmerion.

I took my new butterdish as an opportunity to upgrade to lurpak!! 2 extravaganzas apparently!!

Mounjaro
Uber whenever I need it
First class train upgrade whenever I’m in the mood

I don’t understand this Lurpak obsession - DH and I think it’s horrible and tastes greasy. If you want nice butter, go for French salted.

Love a bit of potato on my butter!

NT membership seems such good value that I never consider it an extravagance, more of a steal! I assume there must be people who get it but only go twice a year, because I can't believe we get to rinse it as much as we do for fifteen quid a month.

I was gifted a life time membership at 18 and have done the same for our kids. Reach 18 and it’s yours - you get to take two adults! However mine was like £750 and the last one I paid for was like £2000

2026IsMyYear · 14/03/2026 10:58

Butter is a superfood!
We love butter but only proper Kerrygold salted.

In France we use French with seasalt crystals.

Lurpak is disgusting

We have a beautiful butter dish from PiP Studio

I splashed out on stupidly expensive garden furniture 2 years ago . Was worried I would regret it. I was wrong. Bloody love it and it makes me happy.

What furniture did you get please? I need to pick some and don’t know where to start.

It is an all-weather corner set from Maze Living. Table is a faff to move up and down but otherwise it's bloody marvellous. Then went the opposite way budget-wise and got a gorgeous bistro set that was an absolute bargain but can't remember where that was from.

Thank you for the encouragement! I was a bit worried that perhaps there was a tumbleweed moment when I shared my dream dress. (One person's dream is another's nightmare!) But I'm so chuffed you think it's fab too! 🤩

Re priming DH, he's thrilled that I'm so happy with it, and says it's a lovely dress, but that's about as far as it goes. He wouldn't care if I went around in a bin liner. Which is just as well really because most of the time I more or less do!!!!!!

It is gorgeous, I love it too!!

Hiring an aeroplane for a couple of hours before sunset and flying up the coast.
It's well worth the £15 grand I spent getting my licence, and the £200 an hour to hire. No feeling like it.
