What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Running shoes and gym kit
Pukka liquorice tea
Coat paint for my house renovations

Pukka licorice tea is the best!

A weekly solo trip to a local cafe where I have a large cappuccino and a slice of cake (usually coffee and walnut ) and sit in one of the large armchairs and read my book for an hour or so an absolute treat

I do something similar, love coffee and want cake 😃

I cannot buy cheap tiles, paint, fabric or wallpaper. I can’t see the point when I’m going to be looking at them for ages. Building work has got so expensive now, costs a mint to change anything (especially with my taste in materials).

My horses!

Same! x

Books. We have a limited income but when I really get on with a writer I have to keep going until the end. Although only up to 34 of the Rex Stout books. And my ShiTzu. She has her Butternut Box delivered monthly and her jumpers are hand knitted.

NorskSensibilities · 06/03/2026 18:58

@Advice5 I’m sure @TheChicDreamer will be along to tell you about her experience but thought I’d offer some info.

I’d Had braces as a child (well, teenager) but they hadn’t worked as well as they might.

Also my teeth just felt small. Turned out the reason for that is that I grind them every night.
The cosmetic dentist I used said he wasn’t prepared to put veneers on my teeth because my teeth weren’t straight enough, and therefore the veneers wouldn’t last. So I had to have straighteners. I had Invisalign. It took absolutely ages but I now have good, but very natural looking, teeth.

I wear retainers every night to stop the grinding doing damage and to keep my teeth in place.

Am very pleased with how natural they look.

Concerts and hotels. I go to loads of concerts and will happily pay for a good hotel nearby so I don’t have to rush for a train. If it is someone I really want to see and can’t fit uk dates around my diary I will happily go abroad. I just love music.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/03/2026 19:03

£28 on swimming once a week. £30 on a cleaner once a fortnight. £40 on a gardener once a fortnight. £44 for a massage once a month. About £200 a year on theatre tickets and £100 on concert tickets, although that will reduce when I no longer have to pay to see/hear my grandson sing in the Cathedral choir performances! About £500 a year on haircuts and highlights. £40 every 2 months to get the windows cleaned.

As somebody who has always been very poor and is, at last, relatively comfortable, these all feel wildly extravagant to me!

DeedsNotDiddums · 06/03/2026 19:05

I love takeaway/ a few meals out every now and then. Definitely one meal out or a takeaway every week, if not more.

nannyl · 06/03/2026 19:11

My cleaners, every week, who also change my bedding as its a job i Hate!
my aga (I love to cook so its well used and i dont have any other means of cooking or drying washing when its wet outside)
private school for my DC
Ocado every week (but i dont think its as ££ as others think)
Lovely comfortable mattresses and egyption cotton bedding on all the beds in the house (including DC / spare beds)

Bugsandbeds · 06/03/2026 19:12

Shark Depuffi....best beauty gadget I've ever owned

DawnAnn · 06/03/2026 19:16

Theatre tickets and tickets for comedy shows. Also if I see something new in the M&S food hall that I fancy, I just buy it 😍

Thisismynewname23 · 06/03/2026 19:16

Atkinson’s are the best! My luxury is lovely skin care and my gorgeous pup

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:44

@nicky2512 Ha, I also spend a small fortune on the dog but that's not extravagant, totally necessary 😆

@15February1960 Going to my mum's isn't exactly a joyful experience. She makes it very clear that having visitors is a huge inconvenience so three times a year is more than enough.

Haha

tommyhoundmum · 06/03/2026 19:23

My dog and cat, the garden birds and foxes

Thegoofylife · 06/03/2026 19:23

Dogs, their insurance, dog food, dog beds and pampered
Horses - see above
this house - love it it is my dream house and I am very very lucky
my decking love sitting out on it and watching the sun go down cost a fortune but love it
ditto our patio furniture - must of sat on at least 100 different loads from Harrods down to this set. We had decided on a set that was £6000 and we just about the place an order when we finished shopping at the range and sat down on this set at the end of the tills, I said to DH OMG this is so so comfy and we both looked at each other £500 for a table and two chairs and it is less than 10% of what we were looking at spending - got it out yesterday and were like love it comfiest chairs ever
spotify and audible - don’t need them but we have family membership and love them and we have it for everyone in the family
I have really sensitive skin and use Neale’s yard, simple does it too but Neale’s yard is heavenly on my skin
have my nails done once a week, facial once a week, massage once a week and hair done every 3 weeks I call it self care someone else wouldn’t
we travel - a lot cruises booked etc and one trip minimum with each child to give them quality time - they choose destination etc
big family holidays- northern lights, safari etc once in a lifetime trips

Both DH and I had large traumas in our lives and we firmly believe we need each of our children to be helped to buy a lovely house and max out isas and then it is spend it and make memories

Crumpets. Before you say they're not expensive, I'm not in the UK. I have to pay around £5 for a pack of 6 and a further £15 delivery charge. For crumpets.

That's a bit steep, can't you make them? Where are you that costs so much, is there a tax payment involved?

ElvisMc · 06/03/2026 19:23

Fairfax & Favor boots! Can’t stop buying them! 😆 Holland Cooper and Horzehoods equestrian clothing in matchy matchy colours! Oh and horses………..

Caniweartheseones · 06/03/2026 19:25

I love this thread. Is it bad I don’t think I have extravagances but am happy with my life? I am tired and overworked, under-appreciated and now am going to extravagantate! Thanks.

DishesAreDoneMan · 06/03/2026 19:28

Coffee. One a day religiously.
I buy coffee for the machine at home. (But only tend to use it at weekends or if I’m not at work)
A daily latte at the onsite office cafe at work (subsidised so £2) and a takeaway one if I’m out and about… if I fancy one.
I completely savour every single coffee and never feel guilty about it.

Audible subscription. I listen to one book a week or so, I’ve always loved reading but don’t have time to sit down to read a book. I really enjoy being able to get lost in stories whilst commuting, walking the dog, doing a stint on the treadmill or doing admin tasks at work.

Lucyccfc68 · 06/03/2026 19:31

I love the variety of extravagant spends/treats.

Mine are:

Weekly cleaner
Monthly hair appointment for roots and foils
Trainers - probably buy a new pair every 8 weeks.
Books

Shitmonger · 06/03/2026 19:35

My horses. I spend an absurd amount on them each month and at competitions. However one of the reasons I moved to the US was because I love the horse show culture here and I did get a massive pay increase that enables me. So really I’m just doing exactly as I’d planned.

Writing this reminds me that the farrier came yesterday and I owe him $1800. 😂

ponyprincess · 06/03/2026 19:36
