What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

I'm really pretty poor at the moment, so my extravagance is something that most people wouldn't even notice, but - my audible membership. An audio book every month is such a luxury; I run the books overnight to help me fall and stay asleep and it's like being read to all snuggled up in bed when you were a child.

So it's only about £8.99 per month, but it's money I can't really afford and yet...

.A Gails muffin and earl grey tea twice a week

.Glass bottled water from waitrose

.Blow dry once a week, it costs £30 and it's the only time ai wash my hair, I feel so good afterwards. Im so terrible at doing my own hair.

.My gym membership which is at a nice hotel and costs £99

I spent many years being poor so feel so grateful to do these things. ⁸

Go to the membership part of audible and click cancel your membership. They often do things like, "Are you sure you want to leave?" If not we'll give you free months for 99p a month and that also works with things like Disney Plus.

corblimeyguvnr · 05/03/2026 19:20

All my spending 😂

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 05/03/2026 19:21

Spa membership and holidays, I’m worth it.

My cat, she’s a Ragdoll and the most perfect, soft, amazing, clever creature ever to be created and worth every single penny.

I’ve never heard a ragdoll described as clever before 🤣. Yours must must gifted in ragdoll terms, ours is as thick as mince, he’d just sit in the road if he ever got out.

Adults only hotels, love the peace. A solid tiled roof on our conservatory, it's transformed it, and window shutters too, we love them.

brunettemic · 05/03/2026 19:28

Running shoes…my carbon plated racing ones are >£200 and generally I probably spend £125-£150 on pairs. Excluding racing ones I have a rotation of at least 4 on the go at any one time.

Happydays321 · 05/03/2026 19:29

Business class flights and luxury hotels, personal trainer and good teabags.

Ifyounevergiveup · 05/03/2026 19:31

Surgeries.

Cosmetic, as opposed to financially supporting my local GP 😆

Just had my first “proper” as opposed to Botox etc (upper eyelid lift) and I’m a convert. 60th present to myself and it won’t be the last!

You’ve painted such a beautiful picture I can well imagine the joy you get from your audible book. 💐

I love this post too ...

My mum used to put cassette tapes on for us at bedtime and leave the player in the hall between our rooms and we would listen with the lights out.

Just being nosey to ask why you only visit your Mum 3 times a year?. We are all different but if my adult children only saw me 3 times a year I'd be so depressed.. l visit my sister once a month and she lives 200 miles away.. anyhow to answer your question.. people think im extravagant for flying abroad 8 times a year for a 5 day break.. although its always SC but l do get a villa with it's own pool. I eat out 3 times a week for late lunch/ early tea.
But to me this is just normal .. l think it all depends on our own money situation. I take ubers everywhere if not being driven by family members... even had far as 200 miles .. there and back.

Sounds like you are retired and have all the time in the world!

Mostly one off stuff
£1800 on a root canal and crown I could have had under my dentist plan. I went elsewhere to be properly numbed and have a same day crown
£880 ish on a mattress

Which mattress and is it good? DH and I can't find one we like ...

VividDeer · 05/03/2026 19:37

Jo malone perfumes
Food, like the odd delivery from cook or stocked
Eating out every week
Gym membership

bigbadbitchface · 05/03/2026 19:39

good car, good holidays/days out for DD. I work full time with commute and buy my lunch most days - love the convenience and it’s normally healthy enough. it’s the first thing i cut when saving though

Grandmashorty · 05/03/2026 19:39

Recently:
-Business class flights to NZ - such a fabulous experience
-XL Morris & Co rug
-Bean to cup coffee machine
-Robot vacuum
Generally, maybe premium make up
I haven’t always splashed out but now in my 60s, recently retired and treating myself. I inherited a modest sum of money last year when my Mum died.

bigbadbitchface · 05/03/2026 19:40

p.s. premium economy seats always

stargirl27 · 05/03/2026 19:46

About a grand on a latex mattress. Worth every single penny as I have arthritis in my spine and hips.

Meat from the butchers, sometimes equivalent to supermarket prices sometimes more expensive, but always far far better quality.

Doggymummar · 05/03/2026 16:40

Godd job you are not my mum, once every five years is enough. Or maybe if you were I wouldn't mind seeing you 😏

Or mine, she won't let me in the house as I dared to criticise her beloved dog who is terribly behaved, jumps up and scratches - rather than train it her solution was for me not to enter her house.

Mindlesslyscrolling · 05/03/2026 19:51

Business class flights if flying long haul... not sure I could do it otherwise at my age!

Sirzy · 05/03/2026 19:52

Gym membership, PT and training plan.

WhyCantThingsJustBeEasy · 05/03/2026 19:52

museumum · 05/03/2026 16:22

a personal trainer. once a week.
It's soooo expensive but I am very nearly 50 and I know I just cannot make myself do strength or mobility work without her. I don't pay for a gym, but if I did it would be a waste as I wouldn't go. I like running and cycling but I know I need to do strength and mobility to stay healthy. i basically pay her for the knowledge but also the motivation and accountabilty and she plans it all so I don't have to think, I just turn up and do as I'm told.

@museumum I was 50 2 weeks ago, and that is what id like, someone to keep me right nd shower me what to do. But I just can't justify the cost! Keep it it up 💪
