To be fair even if you aren't a Muslim you might not be keen on bringing about Armageddon.

It's odd as well how evangelicals appear to think that bringing Armageddon needs the deaths of millions of others, and never them.

Reminds me of something I saw recently that made me smile. I paraphrase.

" Why are Bishops who always talk of the glory of meeting God, always so reluctant to go meet him".

It was a comment about the passing of some bishop at age 98 I think.

Nah, I will avoid bashing the bishop jokes.

:-)

The US evangelicals are. It's one of the reasons they voted for Trump. And their prayers are coming true.

Sample blog thing here from 2018. There is loads of this, most blocked for me. There are also the "signs of Armageddon clocks" sites, that I can't get. They will be ecstatic now.

Trump and the Politics of Armageddon | Political Quarterly

I have read that the evangelicals (or some at least) genuinely believe Trump will bring in the end times when the good float on up to heaven, so I imagine you’d look forward to that maybe - though they also believe he is ‘a flawed human’ - I’m not sure myself whether actually it’s the devil ushering in the end times (I think he is expected too in this narrative) - Ala the Omen!

This is a very different Christianity to the one I learned of as a child, and seems incredibly contradictory to Jesus as I was taught, but there I appear to align better with many bishops and the pope, so maybe my understanding wasn’t so wrong!

I’m not religious and don’t mean to offend anyone who is - but this type of US exceptionalist Christianity is baffling to me - as is Trump, so guess they make good bedfellows after all.

Lalgarh · 03/03/2026 13:45

It also plays into the Shia sense of victimhood dominant among the clerics in Iran. Iran is now lobbing missiles at neighbours who were notionally allies.

It's despite Trump and the evangelist nutters pushing away states from Iran that have strived to keep their heads down till now

walllaw · 03/03/2026 13:45

I have personally always thought it's a very bad idea to elect, or put into positions of power, people who are waiting eagerly for the rapture.

walllaw · 03/03/2026 13:47

So these utter morons have left Americans basically stranded all over the Middle East and are telling them they're now in charge of making their own way home.

I cannot see how even the most deluded lunatic can be defending them.

Some contemporary Islamist movements cite Islamic eschatological traditions to argue that a final confrontation with “Rome” must occur before the end times. This idea is most often linked to a hadith in Sahih Muslim, which describes a future battle at Dabiq or al-A‘maq between Muslims and “the Romans” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Tribulations). In classical interpretation, “Rome” (al-Rūm) referred to the Byzantine Empire, the eastern continuation of the Roman Empire and a major power during the Prophet Muhammad’s lifetime. Over time, some interpreters broadened the term symbolically to mean Christian or Western powers.

Cool. I did try to fact check my statement before hitting the post button, but I discovered it is an "ultra banned super duper sensitive subject" on my web.

Yeah, I get ISIS are Sunni etc, but even the different sects have different sects and all that.

Is the fire from Iran personally ie/ by their bombs, or are they thinking Trump will go nuclear, or are they just channelling their aspirations/beliefs that this is what will happen?

Not so keen on any Armageddon or Rapture personally as I’m not so sure I’d go the right way.

I think many of the current aggressors need to ‘sit down next to’ James - but they won’t I suppose!

I have often felt that if you treat Islam as Christianity historically, then it's the equivalent of the European 1500s in that timeline.

If we assume that there is some natural law of humanity that means both movements advance at the same speed, then we are looking at the fracturing of the Catholic church and the rise of Protestantism. How that translates into Islam is for brighter souls than me, if indeed it's a valid premise (which I do not assert).

It's a load of bull. (See also: Putin, Trump).

The worst possible outcome for the US - and by extension "the West" (whatever that means in 2026) would be for the Iranian "regime" to melt into the vast wilderness of the huge land mass that made up a lot of Persia" and blow raspberries at the hapless troops who will have to go and find them. Because that really will be a forever war. With an endless supply of AK-47s from the country that makes them as good as next door.

SerendipityJane · 03/03/2026 14:48

I guess the UK, NZ Canda and Australian embassies could try to help. And forward the invoices to the state department.

Oh g_d @RedTagAlan stay safe!

I have been warned a few times :-)

During covid, I even had cops turn up with a declaration for me to sign. No state secrets to the outside and all that. Of course, it's a state secret what state secrets are. People have been jailed for saying what the price of fruit and veg is. That can be called economic data.

But this is one of my points re Iran.

Self censorship is a huge part of the mechanism. So when people post on "other threads" that they saw vids on Twitter of people dancing, I say hmmmm. Lets wait for real news.

And "harmonization" of the web and media is exactly what Trump wants for the US.

One has to try to guess where the line is. Part of the mechanism.

I have to say though, the PRC position on this war is totally correct and proper. Trump should listen to them.

Thanks for the comment :-)

Shame those squillionaires like Must and Bezos couldn't spare some change.

Personally, I'd advise Starmer to make an open offer to all US Citizens (ideally with commonwealth support). Who knows there could be a surprise reality TV hit somewhere in there.

Oh yes, I’m not so worried about it, just pondering the meaning, of which there isn’t any really.

I think this war will not truly end for a long time, even if it officially is announced as such, it will falter on and on and on. Way past Trump’s attention span for sure. Not sure of Netanyahu’s strategic aim except to avoid his own criminal charges - he’s not so stupid as to see it resolving much else long term, I don’t think - I’m not sure Trump has/or knows the ‘aim’ of this war at all.

Just all a depressing mess - Trump is so good at these.
