Gordon Brown and AMW

Presumably the information GB is now presenting on AMW is stuff he had access to while he was in Governement? If so, why is he only speaking out now? Or did he try earlier and the establishment was such that even the PM couldn't be heard?

I like GB, always did, I'm curious about what it was that means he's only speaking out now.

I am also confused that Gordon Brown is suddenly part of this story.

u3ername · 23/02/2026 09:42

I like him too and the fact he’s speaking out now tells me he would’ve if he could’ve back then too.

AmberSpy · 23/02/2026 09:42

According to Newscast GB has been doing his own investigations behind the scene - I imagine this involves listing people who were senior at the time who the police haven't interviewed yet, and going through old records in the light of what is now known, and spotting possible leads that now stand out. Remember there are likely to be millions of things to be reviewed so if he can use his knowledge of things that were important at the time to point the police in specific directions that may prove to be quite helpful.

But isn't that terrifying? That even the PM (or former PM) couldn't be a "whistlblower"?

What or who is AMW.
I do wish we could have full names in Opening Posts.

It might be a case of GB doing the decent thing but If you are or were a senior Westminster politician in office at the time Mandleson was rising up the greasy pole do you want people looking hard at Mandleson or do you want to hint that they ought to be concentrating on AMW?

A few folks seem to think this is all the (singular) system protecting itself but I suspect it's fast becoming Westminster verses the House of Windsor...

Andrew Marr on R4 yesterday said that Gordon Brown was putting most political journos to shame, doing the detailed, thourough work that they should have been doing. He's got the bit between his teeth on this one. Bloody good for him.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/02/2026 09:54

Did any of you watch “Hacked” about the phone hacking scandal. GB pops up in that too, working behind the scenes to help the people trying to uncover hacking.

There does seem to be an issue with Mandelson, perhaps the gov and GB are happy to look at AMW instead to preserve their own skins.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 23/02/2026 09:59

I don't think it's stuff he's been sitting on for years, more that there's all these reams of new information that's been released as part of the Epstein files, and he's been going through it and making links to privileged information he has due to being Prime Minister, and then supplying that to the police.

To give a completely hypothetical example, he might see a reference in the Epstein files to Andrew being somewhere on a specific date, and be able to corroborate that via his own diaries.

To be honest, I rather respect GB for doing this. I had a quick trawl through the files when they came out, and very quickly realised I really don't have the stomach for it. GB doesn't need to do this, he had no real reason to get involved at all, but he seems to be utterly disgusted with what possibly went on "under his watch" as it were, and have a real need to get to the bottom of it.

Absolutely this

I’ve always admired Gordon Brown. Thank god for him now.
He’s doing us a real service while some of media is trying distract us with Kate’s dress or whatever .

This is factually incorrect, as GB personally wrote a letter to the police asking for a formal investigation on Mandelson

Superb. Can I nick this moniker? It deserves a wide dissemination. 🌟

My fave is Lone Skum, which is literally an anagram of Elon Musk. One his mother did not spot!

Again - absolutely this too
I don’t have the stomach for it either and I’m so grateful Gordon Brown is doing this.

Gordon Brown is a really decent man. I don't think it is fair or right to try to slyly smear him as pp has done.

Yes that’s my understanding of what GB is doing - trawling in detail through the Epstein files and tying them up with official records. Good for him. Always thought he was a decent chap.

Sesma · 23/02/2026 10:12

I thought it was stuff that Gordon Brown recently discovered through his own investigation

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 23/02/2026 10:14

Always liked and respected GB.
I am so glad he is doing this.
He refused to take his pension money after he left office and l really admired him for that . Also anyone who had the good sense to marry his wonderful wife is ok by me .

She’s just asking what’s going on surely.

He’s just an ex PM to me I don’t feel strongly either way. I do think there’s a wait on Mandelson, perhaps for other reasons though.

If you are referring to me no smear intended but he's a politician....he may be a decent bloke but he's had at least one moment when the guard dropped.

Even accepting GB is as an individual doing good work you have to be pretty naive to think other MPs now coming out of the woodwork to push for e.g. answers about Epstein/AMWs airfield use or wanting Parliamentary time dedicated to debating a change in the Line of Succession (LOS) are all doing it because they are decent folk.

Many at Westminster will want the MSMs attention pretty much fully tied up with reporting on the Royal Family for as long as possible....and then a bit longer.
