Gordon Brown and AMW

Presumably the information GB is now presenting on AMW is stuff he had access to while he was in Governement? If so, why is he only speaking out now? Or did he try earlier and the establishment was such that even the PM couldn't be heard?

I like GB, always did, I'm curious about what it was that means he's only speaking out now.

She’s just asking what’s going on surely.

He’s just an ex PM to me I don’t feel strongly either way. I do think there’s a wait on Mandelson, perhaps for other reasons though.

He might "just" be "an ex-PM" to you, but surely you can acknowledge that he is doing a good thing?

PandoraSocks · 23/02/2026 10:22

notimagain · 23/02/2026 10:19

If you are referring to me no smear intended but he's a politician....he may be a decent bloke but he's had at least one moment when the guard dropped.

Even accepting GB is as an individual doing good work you have to be pretty naive to think other MPs now coming out of the woodwork to push for e.g. answers about Epstein/AMWs airfield use or wanting Parliamentary time dedicated to debating a change in the Line of Succession (LOS) are all doing it because they are decent folk.

Many at Westminster will want the MSMs attention pretty much fully tied up with reporting on the Royal Family for as long as possible....and then a bit longer.

I absolutely wasn't referring to you notimagain.

Happyjoe · 23/02/2026 10:23

I think it was a case of couldn't. In the news this morning is the fact that us, the tax payer paid for Andrews 'massages' while trade envoy. Someone questioned the payments but was overrode by his boss.

Protect the royal family I think was name of the game.

Why the air quotes? Is he not an ex PM?

I’m reading the thread to understand what he’s doing. Some good points below.

I’m not going to take the bait and derail

Gordon Brown has been working behind the scenes and handing dossiers to the police .
I am very grateful .

Yep agree.

Gordon Brown in a recent Guardian article said Margaret Hodge had done a good job investigating corruption . That he would mention her name whilst talking about the investigation of serious abuse of vulnerable women and girls by the Elite rings alarm bells for me .
Was GB unaware , at the time , of
Tony Blair’s ‘Minister for Children ‘ conduct when good Social Workers and police has asked her for help to investigate the serious & ubiquitous child abuse ( and links to paedophile rings ) going on across children’s homes whilst she was Chair of Islington Council ?
It was covered in depth over weeks by the Evening Standard . Articles about it by Eileen Fairweather / The Independent are stll online . Also see Dr Liz Davies’ website.
My guess is , as with the Westminster Enquiry into Elite Paedophile Rings of 10 years ago, the ‘Establishment’ will make a big show of saying how shocked and horrified they are until public interest dies down . A few token people ( AMW / Maxwell ) will be thrown to the Wolves and the whole horror show of exploitation of the vulnerable/ blackmail of public figures will rumble on . Ruining both the lives of the victims and ours through the ramifications of corruption .

Shadeflower · 23/02/2026 10:27

I don't know why anyone thinks im trying to smear him, that's absolutely not the case, I'm glad he's doing what he's doing. I'm just curious about "the system" and what prevented him speaking out sooner.

I do think the situation with Mandelson is interesting. He clearly had an awful lot of power and influence in the Blair/Brown days, and it would seem, retained that until quite recently. "Everyone" knew he was sleazy even if they didn't know exactly the extent of it. It's beyond me why Starmer made that appointment, why it was worth the risk. I have a feeling it was because that's what the Americans/Trump wanted and that there was considerable pressure.

As long as those dossiers include his own files from the early'ish days of New Labour being in power I'd be minded to agree.

And I said of course. It wasn’t a surprise.

MabelsBeats · 23/02/2026 10:29

I agree with @VimesandhisCardboardBootsMy understanding is that Gordon Brown has been personally trawling through the Epstein files, putting this together with his knowledge from when he was Chancellor/ PM, and is proactively going to the police and saying ‘look at this, please review it, it may help your investigations’.

I was no fan of Gordon Brown in office, our politics differ, but I believe he has the strongest of moral compasses, which is why he’s undertaken this exercise.

MsGreying · 23/02/2026 10:32

AlphabetBird · 23/02/2026 09:51

Andrew Marr on R4 yesterday said that Gordon Brown was putting most political journos to shame, doing the detailed, thourough work that they should have been doing. He's got the bit between his teeth on this one. Bloody good for him.

He was in a hugely privileged position as Chancellor and then PM.
Is he really only finding out now?

Ukisgaslit · 23/02/2026 10:36

@MabelsBeats

I believe it is moral compass that is driving him too .
There is an interesting article about Gordon Brown in the new statesman . I hope it’s ok if I copy and paste the last paragraph:

“Brown is an antidote to cynics who shout that all politicians are the same. They aren’t. But he does shame the entitled from Westminster or Windsor Castle.”

PandoraSocks · 23/02/2026 10:39

MsGreying · 23/02/2026 10:32

I really, really don't think GB knew what was going on with Epstein. The reason he is acting now is, as pps have said, because of what is coming out in the files.

Shadeflower · 23/02/2026 10:40

We also know Brown was no fan of Mandelson, even way back when.

Is this perhaps tied up in that? He's always "known" he was a wrong 'un, suffered because of the influence he had and is now using that as motivation.

That's not at all to detract from the work hes doing, but this seems really important to him. Having lived the life he has, he must know corruption and sleaze has always been widespread.

It is notably pertinent that Bliar is silent.

SoftIce · 23/02/2026 10:44

I'm pleased that there is at least one politician actually trying to do something to assist. And also surprised. I'm so disenchanted with the antics in Westminster that I wouldn't have believed it to be possible that any politician (of any persuasion) actually has a moral compass. Which is a shame but probably what is driving some of these comments here.

SoftIce · 23/02/2026 10:46

Sorry, can't edit. I respect him a lot for this. Shame on the rest of them.

He was arrested in 2008, and after this Mandelson kept the close relationship.

I have become extremely cynical after being involved in trying to out Savile over 30 years .
One is up against the Press , the Judiciary, Governments , the police & the Secret Services. Many good people in those organisations but proper investigation ALWAYS gets shut down .
Maybe GB is trying or maybe he’s the person ‘looking like he’s trying ‘ . Too early to tell but I know this much WE will never be able to change this system . It’s not ‘a few bad apples’ it’s widespread & the price of challenging it is to lose your career , your reputation & in some cases , your life .
