Its called a conversation

I suppose if you count a bunch of people saying one of two options in a list a conversation although that isn't what @Stuckinthemiddlewithyouuhoh asked for

She's expecting something that people have droned on about for centuries to be settled, literally no one is going to change what they do after reading this, I don't get the point or why anyone would expect them to

Londonmummy66 · 14/02/2026 19:04

I prefer a cheese scone so butter first then marmite................

She isn't literally expecting it to be settled. It's just a turn of phrase to start a lighthearted thread. Pretty obviously.

You spread cream first like butter then put a big blob of jam on the top.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 14/02/2026 19:18

Cream first. Because jam is more spreadable so easier to construct without the whole lot sliding off.

McSock · 14/02/2026 17:24

Totally depends on the consistency of the cream on the day. If it's firm it goes first, if it's softer it goes second.

This one

DoAWheelie · 14/02/2026 19:20

Thin layer of jam, then massive dollop of cream.

I'm not a massive fan of the texture of jam so I add just enough to add some flavour without it affecting how it feels in my mouth.

Gnomer · 14/02/2026 19:21

Butter first, then jam. Cream never goes on easily so is sort of blobbed on the top.
I am a traitor to my county though.

Dearg · 14/02/2026 19:35

Split the skon.

On each half spread the jam of your choice.
Then dollop on a huge squidge of cream.

Eat each half separately, thereby gett8ng more jam and more cream.

Plain or fruit - either or both.

But I am Scottish. If I could deep fry it, that would be the dog’s bollocks.

NoYourNameChanged · 14/02/2026 19:36

Jam… and I’m from Devon 😂

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 14/02/2026 19:40

LaMarschallin · 14/02/2026 17:07

Butter then jam then cream.
Because you can get more cream on top of jam - if I put a big dollop of clotted cream on my scone first the weight of the jam would cause bits of the cream to drop off the sides.
And it's scone to rhyme with "on" not "own".

Physics and elocution!

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 14/02/2026 19:42

@LaMarschallin

Both correct.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/02/2026 19:47

Wouldn't bother.

Get splits instead. The thickest part of the clotted cream is spread first, then the raspberry jam, then a second caress of the softer cream on that for good measure whilst strong tea is poured from the white china pot into white china mugs cups.

Proper job.

Skown.
Definitely no butter.
Jam spread
Cream dolloped

Hereforthecommentz · 14/02/2026 19:56

Just cream, jam is gross! and plain scones no sultanas either.

Trundlingblind · 14/02/2026 19:58

No butter!!! The thought 😱
Jam first, then cream.
(The only exception is if you’re photographing the scones for a magazine or something, as they look prettier with jam on top and you can see both layers then.)

HowBizxarre · 14/02/2026 20:00

IceIceSlippyIce · 14/02/2026 17:38

Sconn

butter on one half
Jam on the other half
Pair together

This is what I do 😅

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 14/02/2026 20:04

Butter? Wtf? Have you no consideration for the NHS?

Anyway, it's obviously clotted cream first, then strawberry jam. Do not listen to my idiot DH, who is the most wonderful, gorgeous, sexually-skilled man on earth, but who prefers raspberry jam, and puts it on first like some sort of barbarian.

Stuckinthemiddlewithyouuhoh · 14/02/2026 20:08

Yes you guys are right with the vote !!

has to be jam first or you can’t really taste the cream

settled it once and for all now 👏

Trundlingblind · 14/02/2026 20:16

Clotted cream is horrible anyway.
(Runs away)

BuntyBeaufort · 14/02/2026 20:53

Butter, jam, cream. It’s the 11th Commandment.

mondaytosunday · 14/02/2026 21:02

Jam first, otherwise the cream melts (as the scone must be warm) and have you tried spreading jam on cream?

likelysuspect · 14/02/2026 21:04

The vote is completely wrong

Cream first because thats the fat element

And you cant spread cream on top of jam, the jam just squidges out

Jam on top of cream

Which is always on the base of butter, salted butter of course

Comefromaway · 14/02/2026 21:05

A thin layer of jam first then a good dollop of cream. If you put the cream on first the jam slides off it.
