Sconn

butter on one half
Jam on the other half
Pair together

Well it depends, doesn't it? Really stiff clotted cream needs to go on first, otherwise you can't spread it out nicely without the jam splodging everywhere.

This has been debated for as long as I’ve lived in England. The cream goes on first because it’s too difficult to spread it over the jam. Whereas jam is easily spread over cream.

This may be true but the taste is better with jam first.

Has no-one ever done one of each and compared? That's what my family did and we agree jam first is a better taste experience!

Plain scones , homemade , no pesky raisins or sultanas.
Lightly toasted .
Let them cool a bit .
Strawberry jam (Bonne Maman)
Small dollop of cream.

No butter .

Poppy61 · 14/02/2026 17:46

Jam first to help the lashings of clotted cream stick. Skown.

I think your problem here is that you’re trying to spread the cream. I spread the jam (thickly) then dollop the cream. There’s no spreading involved. If I’m eating away and find a creamless bit, I’d dollop a bit more on. Like this.

I'm with @Talipesmum, butter first - cream is not, and never will be a butter substitute. So butter, then jam, then cream.

The real question should be strawberry or raspberry!

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/02/2026 17:49

I think I must have cornish ancestry.

Scone (to rhyme with bone, not gone).
Butter
Jam
Cream.

Nice cup of tea.

Generally I prefer raspberry. It’s more reliable and all round better. But, strawberry is particularly good on scones, as long as it’s v good. Something about it with the clotted cream.

Corfe Castle model village tearooms do some of the best cream teas I’ve had. So so generous with the jam and cream, big bowls of them for everyone to share, none of this “little sachets” business you get in national trust tearooms these days. And the scones are freshly baked and lovely.

This is completely back to front!!
Jam spread on scone
Cream is dolloped on NOT spread

Applecharlotte2 · 14/02/2026 17:53

I think it depends whether you are in Devon or Dorset

Tryagain26 · 14/02/2026 17:54

I would happily eat either

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 14/02/2026 17:58

I prefer cream first. And I do like to spread it, a nice thick layer. Then smaller dollop of jam. I've tried both ways, a nd unlike a PP think cream first tastes nicer.

DC do like another PP, and do one half each way.

However. I dont comment on how others have theirs, and if someone else makes it, then I'll have it as it comes. Unlike my SIL who refuses to accept that we like them different ways and pulls cats bum faces and makes stupid comments about how wrong I am. She's even told my brother he's not allowed to eat them cream first!

RetiredGranny · 14/02/2026 17:58

The Cornish don't even have scones, they have splits. So as Devon have the scones, it is lots of clotted cream with jam on top and as other people have said, the cream is a butter replacement.

EyeLevelStick · 14/02/2026 17:59

McSock · 14/02/2026 17:24

Totally depends on the consistency of the cream on the day. If it's firm it goes first, if it's softer it goes second.

Definitely this. Clotted cream is almost always on the bottom. Whipped cream is always on top of the jam.

Clotted cream is best obviously, whatever its consistency, and no butter thanks.

curious79 · 14/02/2026 18:00

Who is the heathen bringing butter into the debate?!?!

butter aside, depends on how soggy either the cream or jam is.
Firmest first

but no cream for me (in another note of controversy)

Then jam.
Then cream.

Edited

Butter is required as an undercoat before any other topping whether it is on scones, toast or sandwiches.

There is nothing to "settle". Just do what you prefer.

🙄

BillieWiper · 14/02/2026 18:08

I think jam first as it's heavier than cream. The weight of the jam could flatten or splat the cream off the scone? But maybe that means the cream isn't thick enough?

Either one I think I'd accept!

bluebelle78 · 14/02/2026 18:09

Butter, jam, cream
