Sorry but no vote is going to settle this. Butter, jam, cream is the correct order and however many people say otherwise won't change that.

ginasevern · 14/02/2026 18:13

I'm from the West Country and locals here call it a scown. Pronouncing it "scon" is usually for non West Country folk or rather posh people. But to answer the question:

Butter
Jam
Cream

Applecharlotte2 · 14/02/2026 18:15

Jam then cream - shown here on this scone

hey that’s a bagel

busyd4y · 14/02/2026 18:18

How exactly are a few Internet randoms going to settle anything?

Why are you bothered, I genuinely don't understand why anyone would care how another person eats a scone Confused

mazedasamarchhare · 14/02/2026 18:21

Butter? On a scone with clotted cream? Urgh NO!
We all know those across the bridge are total philistines, because it absolutely goes: clotted cream and then jam. Any other way is an abomination!

Its called a conversation

ChubbyPuffling · 14/02/2026 18:22

Doesn't matter, scone is just a mechanism to transfer jam and clotted cream to my mouth.

Spoonful of each somewhere on the scone is fine. Usually the one on first is the one with the spoon instantly available... dh will also be spooning cream and jam on a scone, so we do opposites.

Usually put a spoon of jam and one of cream next to each other on one half of the surface, scarfe down that bit, then go for the spoons again...

Megapint · 14/02/2026 18:22

I'm shaken and disturbed by some of these answers. If you don't start thinking right there'll be consequences. This summer there Will be a road block set up around Saltash and if you don't answer right (cream first) you gotta stay on that side. You can't pass through Devon on your way home from Cornwall.

CornishTiger · 14/02/2026 18:24

Naturally Jam First for me.

However when in Devon I’ve respected their customs. It does taste different. Not as sweet.

However you do it. Enjoy it.

Surely the bigger debate should be fruit or plain.

ThePoshUns · 14/02/2026 17:38

No to butter! Cream first then jam.

Absolutely no other way to scone

shhblackbag · 14/02/2026 18:25

Talipesmum · 14/02/2026 17:04

Butter first.
Then jam.
Then cream.

Then eat.

Correct.

CornishTiger · 14/02/2026 18:27

Sorry I draw the line at butter and cream.

The only butter on a scone should be in a warm cheese scone.

ODFOx · 14/02/2026 18:27

Proper clotted bread is thick and buttery so goes on first. If it’s whipped cream then I do butter and jam them top it with cream. Thus couldn’t select from your choices.

SirChenjins · 14/02/2026 18:27

No butter needed - cream on first which acts as butter, then jam. Cream must be clotted, none of your double nonsense.

NeartoNewquay · 14/02/2026 18:28

@Megapint - what about us - are we allowed out?
TBH we have traitors in our midst- DH and Oldest DD prefer the Devon way (but they have to keep it v v quiet) 🤣

nocoolnamesleft · 14/02/2026 18:29

Butter first, then jam. If no butter available, then a thin scraping of cream then ham. Really not keen on cream.

CornishTiger · 14/02/2026 18:33

The biggest travesty I ever experienced was when in the outlet place at Ross on Wye. I was given blackcurrant jam with my cream tea. It really was a step too far. I was grateful to get on the south bound M5 after that.

RubynRita · 14/02/2026 18:34

Jam then cream.
Or butter, jam cream

cherrymauve · 14/02/2026 18:35

Butter
Cream
Raspberry Jam

ultracynic · 14/02/2026 18:35

It all depends on the dollopyness of the jam and cream. Usually one is more firm and spreadable than the other, so that one has to go first.

Megapint · 14/02/2026 18:36

@ No you're not. We don't want that kind of propaganda in our country. Before we know it, it'll be all side crimped pasties.

luckylavender · 14/02/2026 18:36

Talipesmum · 14/02/2026 17:04

Butter first.
Then jam.
Then cream.

Then eat.

Almost. Butter first, then jam. Ditch the cream.

O00ps · 14/02/2026 18:37

Thick cream / Cornish clotted cream instead of butter, then jam. No way could I manage to spread thick cream on top of jam.

PainterInPeril · 14/02/2026 18:48

Born and bred Devonshire dumpling here. It's scon not skone. And I like jam first then cream.....preferably seedless raspberry jam.
